Hi gang, I've been DM of our group for the past year and up till now we've all agreed that any character wielding a ranged weapon that attacks an adjacent character provokes an attack of opportunity. Up till today we ruled that if the attack of opportunity lands the ranged attack is wasted as a misfire. Does anyone have a RAW on this? We've been using this rule for years and it's carry over from our previous DM but if it's just homebrew it may be time for a change as a new member is challenging it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Its homebrew. That can only happen if the AoO is a Disarm attempt or lethal to the archer.
