(This is a fairly high procedure thread; please read the entire instructions carefully before posting. Thanks.)

Ever have a simple, straight-forward rules question that you can’t figure out the answer to? Ask it here. No question is too simple. No more worrying about whether your question is “worth” starting a thread. Ask here and receive an answer. You are, of course, welcome to start a thread for your question, and if you think your question is subject to many interpretations or will start a debate, you are encouraged to start a new thread for it.

This thread will serve as a catch-all for simple, discreet questions that can be answered quickly according to the RAW (Rules As Written). This thread is for all simple RAW questions about D&D 3.5. If your question is not about the RAW for 3.5, please look in the appropriate threads in the appropriate forums.

The Procedure:

Do:
Label your questions with bold Q#s.
Label your answers with the bold Q# that you are responding to and/or quote the question.
Be sure that your answer is correct before you post it; if you are the least bit uncertain, just let it pass and get the next one.
Try to give your answers in as clear and straightforward terms as possible.
Feel free to quote or link to relevant rules in the SRD, Errata, or FAQ that supports your answer. (You may want to give your answer and then modify it to add support – otherwise someone else may answer while you’re assembling yours.)
Specify if your question is for a system other than D&D (the default for this thread).

Don’t:
Ask Homebrew rules questions here.
Ask trick questions or attempt to “stump the panel,” so to speak.
Answer a question that’s already been answered.
Offer contradictions, clarifications, exceptions, or extensions of prior answers unless, in your opinion, the answer give is plainly and completely wrong.
Post to debate the answers given.
Post to carry on other conversations whether tangentially related or wholly unrelated.

Dispute Resolution Procedure:
If you dispute someone’s answer – meaning that they got it wrong in a critical fashion – post your answer and suggest that the original questioner start a thread to discuss it further if they want it hashed out.
If someone disputes your answer, don’t respond. Just wait to see if the original questioner starts a new thread to discuss it.
If your question leads to a disputed answer, start a new thread if you’d like it discussed further.

Here are some sample questions. “Bad” questions just mean they should be asked in their own thread where you can get many answers and opinions. “Good” questions just mean that these are the types of questions that are amenable to a quick straightforward answer (probably).

Sample “Bad” Questions:
How do I play D&D? (Great question, but not for this thread.)
What is a good 10 level TWF build? (Far too broad and requires much opinion)
What +2 LA race should I take for my sorcerer build? (Again, an opinion question)
Which is better GURPS or D&D?

Sample “Good” Questions:
Q.1. Are there any Large +0 LA races?
Q.2. As a sorcerer/rogue, do I get to add sneak attack damage to my attack spells?
Q.3. What effect would Dispel Magic have on a golem or similar construct?
Q.4. Is there a feat that allows me to get a familiar?

Please start over with the numbering. When this one reached 50 pages, please report it so that we can start a new one. Thanks.

Q1 Are warforged affected by a rust monster's Rust(Ex) ability? MM 3 says nothing about WF being affected by RM's. The errata is silent. RM's can normally only target objects.

The Eberron CS indicates WF are affected by a RM's rust ability as though it were a Rusting Grasp spell. The ECS is the more recent book I believe.

Is the RAW that WF are not affected by RM's if the ECS is being used, it overwrites the MM3? If the ECS is not being used then the standard reference is MM3 and WF are affected?

The warforged's racial ability is clear:

The iron in the body of a warforged makes him vulnerable to rusting grasp, taking 2d6 points of damage from the spell (Reflex half; save DC 14 + caster’s ability modifier). A warforged takes the same damage from a rust monster’s touch (Reflex DC 17 half ).
Warforged take 2d6 damage from a rust monster's touch, with a Reflex save for half.

Q5

When creating a PC at higher levels, does the WBL define the wealth at the start of the level or just before leveling up?

A 5

There is no defined granularity to say whether or not a character should have that amount of wealth at the beginning or end of a particular level. It is simply the amount of wealth a Level X character is expected to have. Note that the WBL chart is nothing more than a guideline for DMs.

Should characters get the full WBL when created?

That is up to each individual DM to decide, although it's generally considered common practice (at least where Internet discussions are concerned). There is nothing wrong with running a game where the PCs don't get as much wealth or one where they get much more than usual, I would just advise telling your players ahead of time when you make such a decision about an upcoming campaign.

Repost from the last thread:
Q 6
If a monster casts area dispel magic into a space where an invisible pc is hiding, does the creature know something was hit by the dispel magic if it does not remove the character's means of being invisible?
A) If the dispel does not manage to remove anything from the character, does the monster know something was hit?
B) What if something irrelevant to the character's hiding was dispelled?

Khedrac

A 6 No.
The player of the caster of an area dispel magic knows how many caster level checks the DM asked them for (so number of creatures + number of objects + number of areas spells).
The caster of the Dispel Magic gets no information back on the effects of the spell other that what their senses discern, e.g. person (or thing) becoming visible, flyer falling out of air, lights going out etc.

Q2

Yes. They are separate class features.

Q 3: Would a Gestalt Sorcerer/Shugenja be able to use a custom rune staff to snag access to Shugenja Spells in addition to Sorcerer Spells?
Yes, if the spell is an arcane spell that appears on your class spell list. Note that

Addendum: Would they be able to use said staff to access spells for there opposite discipline on the Shugenja side if so? (I.E.: Fire Shugenja able to cast Water spells and vice versa, in this manner?)
Yes. Shugenja are prohibited from learning spells of their prohibited element, but the spells are still on their class spell list, and they can use items of them just fine. (This is in contrast to specialist wizards, who cannot use wands or scrolls of spells from banned schools.)

Q 4

Say, character somehow don't have a feat from the 1st level (for example, Incarnated Construct)
Question: is there any way to fill that empty slot later?
If yes, then may that feat be from those which are "1st level only"?
The effect that caused them to gain an Intelligence score will say if it gives them feats.

A) "Bound" isn't defined as a condition summary. It's just listed among the possible way to get the"Helpless" condition. What exactly can and cannot do a character who is bound?
A character who is bound tightly enough that they cannot move is considered helpless. Other degrees of binding are undefined by the rules, unless there's some source I'm unaware of.

B) How long does it takes to put on manacles on a creature?
Undefined, but binding a creature with rope takes 1 minute, so binding a creature with manacles probably wouldn't take longer than that.

C)Is there way to bind or put on manacles on an opponent during a fight, or is it needed first to turn it helpless?
A Justiciar (Complete Warrior) can do this.

I have a little trouble understanding how exactly the Wall Jumper skill trick works.

If you have succeeded on a Climb check to ascend or descend a wall during this or your previous turn, you can leap horizontally from that wall as if you had a running start.

A) Does this jump itself count as a move action, or is it part of the climb move action?

B) "Leap horizontally as if with a running start"... does that means the equivalent of a long jump?

C) What is the direction of the leap? Does it have to be away from the wall, or can be at an angle, or even close to parallel with the wall?

D) What about the vertical height? Do you reach as high as an ordinary long jump?

It can't be towards the wall, because there's a wall in the way. Other than that, I don't see any restriction on direction.

Yes.

However, Spellthief specifically says that only Spellthief spells can be cast in light armor and spells from other classes (Sorceror or Wizard for example) still follow their normal arcane spell failure chance.

Is there something Im missing or is there a way that Spellthieves casting in armor extends to other spellcasting?

Q010

How does the Highten Spell metamagic feat interact with the Vestige Metamagic class feature from anima mage?
Vestige metamagic applies the metamagic feat to the spell without increasing its effective level. You can use it with Heighten Spell if you choose; however, the spell's effective level will not increase, so there is very little point in doing so.

Q 11: Is there a spell that allows the caster to be treated as trained in a skill even if they have no ranks in it and allows them to designate that skill?

Wieldskill (Player's Guide to Faerun)
Combined Talent (Complete Mage)
Share Talents (Player's Handbook II)

Note that no such spell is required for Craft, which can be used untrained.

I understand what you are saying, but wouldn't this interpretation also entail that Vestige Metamagic actually does nothing? No matter the metamagic used.
20srd says: "Spells modified by a metamagic feat use a spell slot higher than normal."
Vestige Metamagic says: "... without increasing its spell level." As I understand it, under strict RAW interpretation, both rules talk about different things.

A 013

You are correct. It doesn't matter what level a maneuver is when you take your first level, as long as you have all the prerequisites for it (initiator level, discipline access, and eventual specific prereqs for the maneuver).

Note that it is true for maneuvers, but not for stances, however. The text for all 3 martial adept classes specify that the first stance taken must be 1st level.

A bunch of related questions pertaining to multiple attacks.

Q 014
When a character fights with a double weapon to make an extra attack, the off-hand end is treated as a light weapon -- but only for the two-weapon fighting modifiers, right? (That is, -2 to hit with the Two-Weapon-Fighting feat, and Strength damage bonus halved for this end.) The off-hand end is not treated as a light weapon for any other modifier... for example, it cannot benefit from Weapon Finesse, and if a disarm attempt is made with this end, its still count as done with a two-handed weapon, correct?

Q 015
Can a full attack mix melee and ranged attacks? For example, a character dual-wielding a rapier and a dagger down her closest enemy with a rapier attack, and has no other opponent within melee range, can she throw the dagger to another enemy during the same full attack action?

Q 016
The rule for iterative attacks states that you make first the attacks at full BAB, then those with a lesser bonus. However, the rule for Two-Weapon Fighting states that you can choose to strike first with either weapon. Does this means that, when dual-wielding, you can make all your iterative attacks with one weapon first, and then all the other with the other weapon? Or do you have to make all additional attacks with a similar BAB penalty at the same time, just choosing which of either weapon goes first?

Q 017
A few about the Snap Kick feat:

A) "There is no such thing as an off-hand attack for a monk striking unarmed. A monk may thus apply her full Strength bonus on damage rolls for all her unarmed strikes." However, a Snap Kick "is an unarmed attack that deals damage equal to your base unarmed attack damage + 1/2 your Str bonus."

In this case, does specific trump general? That is, does a monk doing a Snap Kick still halves her strength bonus to damage for that unarmed attack?

B) "When you make a melee attack [...] you can make an additional attack at your highest attack bonus." Does that mean that the attack counting as the snap kick cannot be the first in the round? Do you need to make at least another attack (already with the -2 penalty) before being able to use a Snap Kick this round?

C) Finally, in case of a full attack for a character with a BAB +6 or more, does the Snap Kick needs to made at the same time as the other attacks at full BAB, or can it be delayed to after them? (For example, can a character with a reach weapon make his full contingent of armed attacks toward an opponent at 10', then take a 5-foot-step to get closer and conclude with a Snap Kick?)

Khedrac
2016-08-15, 09:12 AM
A 015 Yes

A 016 You have to make attacks in order from highest attack bonus to lowest. Where attacks have the same bonus you can choose which order to attack in.

A 017
A Specific trumps general - especially as the snap kick is not an "off-hand attack" but a specific attack that sues half strength bonus.

B It can be first, but you must decide that you will be making it before you make any attacks so as to apply the -2 (same as Rapid Shot)

C Yes, the Snap Kick needs to made at the same time as the other attacks at full BAB

Hecuba
2016-08-16, 12:10 PM
A21: Yes, though it takes some doing. To use spring attack, you need to be making the attack action and using a melee weapon.

Touch spells are called out under '"Armed" Unarmed Attacks", which fall under "Unarmed Attacks," which are in turn part of the attack action.

To qualify as using a melee weapon, however, you'll need to use the option to discharge the spell as part of an attack with either unarmed strike or natural weapon (which both have further implications).

Q22

Battlemagic Perception
"This determination happens quickly enough that you can attempt to counter the spell as a free action."
As this would make it mostly unusable, free actions being available only on your turn, I presume this is an immediate or a non-action. likely immediate. If errata exists, I would appreciate it - if not, this information is mostly to explain how I houseruled the spell - the question comes now:

"Counterspell attempts are otherwise handled normally, and you can counter the spell even if you do not have line of sight to the spellcaster"

Does this mean that you still need to expend, together with ending the battlemagic perception, a spell that enables counterspelling the spell in question? (i.e. any dispel magic, or the same spell as you attempt to counterspell)

Flying creatures with average or worse maneuverability have a minimum forward speed: is that for each move action, or for each round?

Flying creatures with a minimum forward speed who become entangled (due to a net) can only move at half their speed each round (because entangled): does their minimum forward speed drop to half their new speed? or are they effectively restricted to moving in a straight line?

Hecuba

A31: No. Favored in Guild gives a bonus to checks, not actual ranks.

(In theory you could do it with a combination of Primary Contact and Bloodline levels, but you would need a big chunk of feats to manage the skill boosts, the CL boosts, and the metamagic feat with only your first 3 levels.)

A34: None for paladin mounts, but a couple for Animal Companions.

Animal Companion: Vermin Companion (ECS), Spider Companion (DotU)

A35: It does not appear to be explicitly handled anywhere I can find (DMG, RC, DMGII, PHB, PHBII, MM). Without anything more specific, the RAW answer would revert to the real-world physics transparency rule. That would flag it as per round rather than per movement action: a round takes 6 seconds regardless of how many move actions you get in those 6 seconds, so you velocity (which is the element in question) does not care about the number of move actions you have.

In practice, however, if you have to cite real-world physics transparency you should really be asking your DM.

A36: Minimum forward speed does not change if your movement is reduced: it is a requirement of staying aloft, not a modifier on your movement speed.

How does the spell "Rhino's Rush" and Pounce interact?

ManicOppressive
2016-08-22, 04:02 AM
A 38 Read as written, Pounce provides a full attack following a charge. The standard attack at the end of a charge is a part of the charge action, which means that Pounce allows you to "charge" (as in, move whatever distance), attack, and then full attack. Thus, Rhino's Rush doubles the standard attack that is part of the charge ("...the first charge attack you make...") and not the full attack.

Battlemagic Perception
"Counterspell attempts are otherwise handled normally, and you can counter the spell even if you do not have line of sight to the spellcaster"

Does this mean that you still need to expend, together with ending the battlemagic perception, a spell that enables counterspelling the spell in question? (i.e. any dispel magic, or the same spell as you attempt to counterspell)

A22

Yes. "This determination happens quickly enough that you can
attempt to counter the spell as a free action." just means that you can counter as a free action where normally you would have to have a readied action. You still have to "attempt to counter the spell", meaning throw an appropriate spell out to counter it.

A39

No, not as such. If you're on the DM side, the RAW friendly rule for it would be to put "This weapon will not function unless the wielder has claws." in the weapon description, because the DM can totally make new magic/mundane items. There's not a great equivalent in the DMG for what you want, though. If you mean on the player side, no, there's no ruled way to do that.

A40

There's not a ruled method, no, unless you just roll with transparency rules. Tome of Magic is not renowned for its consistent and elucidated rules, so you won't have much luck hoping for explanations of how shadow magic works with other forms of magic.

Correction! The bonded item rules in DMG2 allow you to ignore most of the prerequisites for a crafted item, and may work depending on which item you want. You can also use wish to bypass the crafting process entirely.

Q. 42

The Banner of the Storm's Eye (MiC p. 151) states that:

As long as it is held aloft, the banner automatically suppresses (but does not dispel) fear effects on all creatures within 20 feet. It also prevents any creature within 20 feet from becoming confused or stunned.

Which is pretty clear, especially with the stunned aspect, which is why most people get the banner in the first place.

However, I found this allegedly official wording on the same item online in Eberron Unlimited:

Effect: A banner of the storm’s eye automatically suppresses (but does not dispel) any fear effects within 20 feet. It also removes the confused and stunned conditions from everyone within 20 feet, if a supernatural or spell-like ability caused that effect.

Is the Eberron Unlimited version an update from the one in the MiC?

If so, would the Stunning Fist feat affect someone in possession or within the area of such banner, or is the feat itself considered a (Su) ability?

Metamagic has no effect on the spells required to counter. Quickened Maximized Silent Still Fireball is still countered by regular old Fireball.

Incidentally, there's not even anything in the rules about a quickened spell being harder to counter, despite that it would logically be harder to identify a spell cast nigh-instantaneously.

A 42

I'm not intimately familiar with Eberron Unlimited but I don't think it's official. At any rate, there is no errata officially recorded for the item as listed in MIC, so the MIC entry is correct.

A49: By RAW, yes - the explicit statement of how to calculate this race's ECL would override the standard rule.

In practice, however, the real answer is that Fiend Folio was remarkably inconsistent about calculating LA, ECL, and RHD properly. As a general rule, when that book messed something up like this, it's because they included RHD as part of LA: that does seem to be the case here, so you're probably better ignoring the LA than the RHD

A49 clarification: It's not just a sample character - is an explicit "Khaasta Characters" rules section that explicitly says that their ECL is class level +3 despite listing 3RHD and 3LA. The offending text is on page 116 of Fiend Folio.

It's worth noting that Fiend Folio was a late 3e book - it could somewhat be forgiven the error in isolation, as ECL\LA\RHD was codified as part of the change. But the issue isn't fixed in the update booklets or in the Serpent Kingdom rerun of the Monster entry.

The actions in combat rules, in the Full Attack section, specify that you can decide after an initial attack to either make a move action (thus making the attack a standard action), or to pursue with the remaining of your attacks, making it a full-round action.

Does this also applies if the first attack is a special attack (like a strike maneuver from the Book of Nine Swords) that normally takes a standard action? Can you make a strike as the first attack of a full attack action, and then use your other normal attacks?

Khedrac
2016-08-26, 03:50 PM
A 52 No If someone initiates a standard action strike then they cannot make a full attack as they have used their standard action which is then not compatible with taking a full attack.
Note, although normally a character can decide whether to complete a full attack or not after their first attack, the rules get unclear if the first attack takes a penalty based on there being a full attack (e.g. rapid shot, flurry of blows or two-weapon fighting) - if they decide not to continue with the attack then should the retrospectively re-calculate their attack's effect? If you know (or can guess) the location of a creature which you cannot see, you can attempt to hit them with any spell requiring an attack roll (touch spells, rays, orbs, etc.) with a 50% miss chance. You cannot, however, use a targeted spell.

Some spells have a target or targets. You cast these spells on creatures or objects, as defined by the spell itself. You must be able to see or touch the target, and you must specifically choose that target. You do not have to select your target until you finish casting the spell. (emphasis added)

I would think it would collapse when you actually attack; consider that you haven't attacked yet until the spell is finished. Like with invisibility, you become visible after you attack, not during.

A 62

According to the FAQ, a creature that flies via wings (so, not a beholder for instance) can be tripped, which causes it to stall. By a strict reading of the RAW, good and perfect winged flyers stall (drop 150ft), then have to make a DC 20 reflex save if they haven't hit the ground yet. However, since good and perfect fliers can both hover and fly straight up without having to slow down or angle, I think a reasonable answer is that they only ever stall 150ft and don't need to make the save. (Personally, I'd have them make the reflex save to avoid stalling in the first place.)

Q65

Suppose two casters, outside of, and on opposing sides of, a 10ft diameter Antimagic Field.

One casts Invisibility, the other casts True Seeing. Can the second caster see the first? Why or why not?

A 65

Yes, the second caster can see the first one. Antimagic field only stops spells and magical effects from functioning inside the area, and it does not block line of effect.

Q66

Suppose again the above two casters, without True Seeing or Invisibility. The first casts Cone of Cold, then Seeking Ray, then Disintegrate, then Orb of Force, then Flame Strike (somehow!) at the second. Which, if any, affect the second, and why?

A 66

All of those spells will affect their targets normally.

Cone of cold and flame strike are area spells, and their effects will be suppressed in any portion of their areas that overlap the antimagic field, but since the intended target is not within the field it will not protect him.

Seeking ray and disintegrate are both ray spells. Like the area spells, they are suppressed within the antimagic field; but since the field does not block line of effect, the rays will simply wink out and reappear on the other side as if nothing was wrong.

Orb of force is an instantaneous conjuration spell. This means that the orb is essentially nonmagical after it appears, and it will function normally even against targets inside the antimagic field.

Q67

Suppose again the Q66 situation, without the Antimagic Field. Given this:

A58: Either be undead or a non-living construct, or you could buy a ring of the darkhidden and cast the no light spell. You could also coat yourself in something that blocks line of effect, such as paint.

An interesting question came up at my last session and I couldn't find the answer to it on my own:

We all know that when you take a readied action, your initiative count changes to just before the event that triggered your action. But what happens when multiple characters are readying for the exact same circumstance? How is the initiative order determined when everyone's initiative gets set to "just before" the triggering action?

We were fighting a wraith and it was doing the usual fly-by into and out of solid objects, never staying around outside of its own turn, so we were all readying spells and eldritch blasts and such for whenever the thing showed itself. Unfortunately, the text about readied actions is written from the perspective of a single character with no mention of multiple characters taking essentially the same readied action.

I'm not 100% sure this is RAW, but the way we do it at my table is the readied actions take place in the same order as the readied chaarcters were already sitting in the initiative queue, and they then stay in that order on subsequent rounds, but now all on the same initiative count.

I am not aware of a Healing Darts spell. If you mean the spell Darts of Life (CC), the answer is there is no interaction because the spell is not on the Healer's list. Questions about houserules are best directed at the DM that made/uses them. Such discussions are beyond the scope of this thread anyways.

Contention: The only question relating to the Healer class was Q70. The rest were relating only to the spell's interactions with feats.

A 71: Augment Healing would cause the spell to provide 1d8+2 points of healing per dart, rather than 1d8.

A 72: Empower Spell would cause the spell to provide 1d8*1.5 points of healing per dart.

A 73: Due to the spell adding on any points due to caster level, the only change would be to allow each dart to remove the dazed, dazzled, fatigued, exhausted, nauseated, or sickened conditions from the target.

Q 075

If a creature with RHD takes a level in Barbarian, does it "inherit" the Illiteracy quality of the class?

i.e. A centaur has 4 "levels" in Monstrous Humanoid. If it takes a level in Barbarian, does it lose the ability to be literate in the languages it already knows?

nyjastul69
2016-08-30, 11:14 PM
A75 No

Illiteracy
Barbarians are the only characters who do not automatically know how to read and write. A barbarian may spend 2 skill points to gain the ability to read and write all languages he is able to speak.

A barbarian who gains a level in any other class automatically gains literacy. Any other character who gains a barbarian level does not lose the literacy he or she already had.

Since none of the tables in OA pages 152-162 have a Caster Level column, and the group entry for Lung Dragon does not mention any spellcasting ability, it is safe to assume this is not a trait they share with the true dragons listed in the Monster Manual. Note that they do have some spell-like abilities, however.

I've checked the "official" OA 3.5 update printed in Dragon Issue 218, and this does not add any spellcasting ability to Lung Dragons

Q 77

Can you only have one instance of permanencied spells on you at any time?
The reason I believe this is the case, is because of how spells work according to the SRD:

Same Effect More than Once in Different Strengths
In cases when two or more identical spells are operating in the same area or on the same target, but at different strengths, only the best one applies.

Same Effect with Differing Results
The same spell can sometimes produce varying effects if applied to the same recipient more than once. Usually the last spell in the series trumps the others. None of the previous spells are actually removed or dispelled, but their effects become irrelevant while the final spell in the series lasts.

Q 78

If Q77's answer is yes, does that mean that, if a permanency was in place and then another one was cast on the same target to permanency a different spell, the originally permanencied spell would begin running down its duration?

A 64: The Orc isn't entirely option less, but you have tied up the move action.

When an immediate action or readied action is used like you describe, it takes place immediately before the action it is interacting with happens but after the previous action completes. The action that it is interacting with then occurs if- and only if- it is still a valid action.

In your example, the Abrupt Jaunt occurs after the orcs move action completes but before the Orcs standard action attack- which then dies not happen because it is no longer a valid action to take.

The orc's move action is over, but be still has a standard action. It's worth noting here that you can always exchange a standard action for a move action - it's rare to do so because you actually want to move twice, but you can do it. That means that, while the orc doesn't have a straightforward way to attack, it can still pursue and close this round.

Lantern Archons have a CL of 3 despite only having 1 HD. (How) does their CL increase when they advance in HD?

KillianHawkeye
2016-09-01, 03:01 PM
A 80

The answer can be found here: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/improvingMonsters.htm#advancedMonsterChallengeRati ng

As an outsider, a lantern archon's CR increases by 1 for every 2 additional Hit Die.

EDIT to Note: Effectively, this means that a 2 HD lantern archon has the same exact CR as a 1 HD specimen. Similarly, the 3 HD and 4 HD varieties both have an advanced CR of 3 rather than 2. (The standard lantern archon is only CR 2, not CR 3 as stated in your post.)

Damn, I totally misread your question!

A 80 correction

Caster Level for spell-like abilities is not usually based on Hit Die and does not automatically increase as a monster advances. Only in cases where there is no CL specified for the abilities do we assume that it is equal to Hit Dice.

Yes, the casting time of the spell.

Armor crystals slot into your armor rather than being worn separately. The wilding clasp prevents the armor from melding with you, so it also prevents the crystal from melding with you. No separate clasp is required.

Spells that require attack rolls are treated like any other attacks for the purposes of underwater penalties. (RC 149)

Q90 Follow-up

So to retrain a feat, it has to be a feat that was selected, and retraining allows you to reselect. I assume that you're only allowed to retrain a selected feat into another selected feat if the new feat was an option for that selection in the first place? For instance, if I took Power Attack as a Fighter bonus feat, I could later retrain that into Weapon Focus (another option for Fighter Bonus Feats), but I could not trade it for Skill Focus, since that's not a Fighter Bonus Feat?

KillianHawkeye
2016-09-02, 11:57 PM
A 90 That's correct.

Consider that selectable bonus feats such as those granted by levels in Fighter or other classes are considered to be class features. The rules for retraining a class feature indicate that the new selection must have been one you could have originally chosen. Additionally, your new choice cannot make any later class feature choices illegal (although some may automatically alter later options that are based on the first choice, such as the choice of feats you gain from the Ranger's fighting style class feature).

Keep in mind that the general description of retraining is "adjusting a decision you made earlier in your character's career by selecting a different legal option."

Q 93 No - they use whatever the creator set when they were created.

Q 94 No, but they do use the wielder's stats and caster level (which can be affected by items:

Staffs use the wielder’s ability score and relevant feats to set the DC for saves against their spells. Unlike with other sorts of magic items, the wielder can use his caster level when activating the power of a staff if it’s higher than the caster level of the staff.

This means that staffs are far more potent in the hands of a powerful spellcaster. Because they use the wielder’s ability score to set the save DC for the spell, spells from a staff are often harder to resist than ones from other magic items, which use the minimum ability score required to cast the spell. Not only are aspects of the spell dependant on caster level (range, duration, and so on) potentially higher, but spells from a staff are harder to dispel and have a better chance of overcoming a target’s spell resistance.

For most items such as wand and scrolls the creator of the item sets everything that applies other than targetting when creating the item.
This includes the caster level, whether the spell is maximised or not, the spell level etc.
Thus the creator of the item could choose to create an item of the spell as affected by the feats you listed, but at this point the item is not a standard tiem and the DM needs to adjudicate pricing etc.

Bit of a convoluted question, but I want to know if this Race/Feat/Template combo is possible and/or legal:

A 104: Unfortunately, probably no. A Primordial Half Giant is fine, and it can take Human Heritage. But Human Heritage is a feat, and cannot be taken before an inherited template. By strictest RAW therefore, you cannot apply Half-Janni to a Half-Giant. So this falls into ask-your-DM-for-it-anyway territory.

The issue is slightly complicated by the fact that while the rules don't allow you to create one, a Primordial Half-Giant with Human Heritage counts as Human for all purposes, and so can have Half-Janni babies. It is not clear though whether those babies can have an illegal stacking of templates or not.

A 107 No. You have to actually have a caster level, not cast a spell-like ability as if you had a caster level, to qualify for things with CL requirements.

You don't technically have to have all the levels in a casting class, as there are ways to raise your CL. But simply having a spell-like ability that has a CL doesn't give you a CL in general. (It just gives you an effective CL for that ability.)

[...]For feats or prestige classes requiring a minimum caster level, creatures that use spell-like abilities or invocations instead of spells use either their fixed caster level or ther class level to determine qualification.

For reference, they can also qualify if their SLA fills a named spell requirement unless the requirement specifies how it needs to be cast ("as a divine spell," "as an arcane spell," etc.)

Q 088

Question about the Deathless type - is there any way to use the Knowledge Devotion feat or Dark Knowledge class feature to get bonuses against Deathless?
Dark Knowledge only functions against the creature types positively identified by the text of the ability and cannot be used against deathless.

Knowledge Devotion can be used against deathless provided you can make an appropriate Knowledge check for them. No Knowledge skill is assigned to the deathless type, but if the deathless creature has the psionic subtype, you can use Knowledge (psionics).

Q98 Fumbled saves & magic items
Character rolls a "1" against a Fireball. The PHB tells us how to figure out which item may be affected.

Where are the rules for how much damage a magic item (say, a +1 Longbow) can take before being destroyed? We couldn't find those quickly.
The rules for damaging objects can be found on pp106–107 of the Rules Compendium, or in the SRD here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/exploration.htm#smashinganObject). The hit points and hardness of an object vary depending on the object. Magic weapons are more durable than nonmagical ones, for example.

Q 101

Can you attack and destroy Non-Armor/Weapon Magical items by attacking them (not sundering them)?
The tables in the SRD don't help with this question, as they seem to omit anything not armor or weapon related:
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/exploration.htm
Here is the more current rule from the Rules Compendium.

The sunder attack (see page 142) allows you to smash a weapon or shield using a slashing or bludgeoning weapon. Smashing another carried, worn, or unattended object is like sundering, except that your attack roll is opposed by the object’s AC instead of another attack roll.

Q 102

If you can attack and destroy wondrous items as you could any other object, how do you calculate the HP of, say, a Ring of Invisibility or an Artificer's Monocle?
Refer to the text for the item in question. If no hardness and HP are given, ask your DM.

Q 103

Can you directly attack a suit of armor or weapon that is currently being worn with a ranged weapon, without using the ranged sunder/ranged disarm feats, following the rules for breaking objects in http://www.d20srd.org/srd/exploration.htm ?
No. Attacking a carried or worn object other than a weapon or shield is like sundering, with the only exception being that you attack the object's AC instead of making an opposed attack roll. All other restrictions of sundering apply, including the requirement of using a melee attack with a slashing or bludgeoning weapon.

Q. 105

Would someone under the effects of Spell Turning be able to reflect back the spell Spirit Jaws (Spell Compendium, p. 202) back at the druid who cast it in the first place?
No. Spell turning only affects spells that target you. Spiritjaws is an effect spell, and does not target a creature.

Q 112

A question about a possible contradiction. Among the rules for a martial strike maneuver is this:

Because strikes allow for a specific form of attack, you cannot benefit from spells or effect that grant you extra attacks when making a strike (such as the haste spell of a speed weapon). You are not taking a full attack action when you initiate a strike, even if its initiation action is 1 full-round action.

However, one strike maneuver looks like an exception:

Flashing Sun allows you to make an additional attack during this round. As part of this maneuver, you take a full attack action and make your normal melee attacks.

So, can the Flashing Sun maneuver be used in combination with haste?
Or with other techniques granting additional attacks, like Flurry of Blows?

A 112 No
This is getting close to not being a simple question, but I will try.
One of the oddities about haste and most other ways of getting an extra attack in a round is that they state that they do not stack with other such methods - so by RAW haste does not stack with flurry of blows or rapid shot.

So, on to Flashing Sun, as you quoted it says "you take a full attack action and make your normal melee attacks"; extra attacks form things like haste are not "normal".
As such, there is no contradiction with the rule that you cannot use methods of gaining extra attacks. Yes there is a slight contradiction with the "are"/"are not" taking a 'full attack action' state, but in this case the 'full attack action' is happening within the special full-round action of the manoeuver, hence you are both taking it and not taking it. Said 'full attack action' is limited by the conditions specified by the calling manoeuver and thus you may not use extra attacks from any other source.

This effect is not cumulative with similar effects, such as that provided by a weapon of speedIt is up to the DM whether any other effect that grants an extra attack is similar to haste. There are significant differences between the various sources of extra attacks. Here are some examples
- Haste: +1 AB to all attacks
- Speed property: +0 AB to all attacks
- Flurry of blows: -2 AB to -0 AB to all attacks
- Rapid shot: -2 AB to all attacks.
- TWF: Various penalties depending on feats and weapons used
- Spinning Halberd Style: -5 to the extra attack

So it is not really clear which if any (except the speed property) do not stack with haste. I'd go with if it is magic (speed property), it does not stack, if it is skill (flurry of blows, rapid shot etc.) it does stack.

A 110 correction
Unlike SLAs, which are not spells, PLAs are still powers. Powers manifested as psi-like abilities still qualify for manifesting unknown powers from another's powers.

Confer the SRD on the subject (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/psionicPowersOverview.htm)

Manifesting Powers

Psionic characters and creatures manifest powers. Whether they cost power points when manifest by a psionic character, or are manifested as psi-like abilities, powers’ effects remain the same.

The section further down in that SRD topic on Manifesting Unknown Powers from Another's Powers Known
explicitly called out the smiles of psionic creatures in addition to characters with manifester levels. Keep in mind that this takes some checks, the creature must be willing, and the power must be on the manifester's class list at a level they can manifest. It is an obscure option for a reason: is usually simpler to just get a power stone.

How does the Draining Touch (Su) interact with multiple attacks from the ghost. For example a ghost with bab +6 can do two Draining touch attacks? As a supernatural ability, the usage of Draining Touch is by default a Standard Action. It cannot be combined in any way with extra attacks gained from a high Base Attack Bonus, a Monk's flurry of blows, or any other kind of Full Attack action. It does not make use of any existing natural attacks or any held weapons, nor can it be combined with any of Tome of Battle's Standard Action strike maneuvers, and only by a rather generous reading of the rules does it satisfy the requirements necessary for the use of the Snap Kick feat.

A ghost that hits a living target with its incorporeal touch attack drains 1d4 points from any one ability score it selects. On each such successful attack, the ghost heals 5 points of damage to itself.

If a ghost with this ability hits a living target with her incorporeal touch attack, she deals 1d4 points of ability drain to any one ability score she selects. With each such successful attack, she heals 5 points of damage to herself. So the ability is not a separate action but something that happens on an attack. The ghost can make multiple such attacks in a round, with certain other abilities.

Re: 128

You're incorrect.

Ghosts do not have a generic "incorporeal touch attack" ability. They in fact retain the attacks of the base creature and only gain a touch attack if they take the Corrupting Touch or Draining Touch supernatural abilities (which require a Standard Action to use as normal).

If a listener succeeds on a Listen check and beats the DC by 20 or more, they can pinpoint your location (RC 114). Loud noises can be heard with a fairly low Listen DC, so making loud noises while invisible may give away your position where staying silent would not. However, even if your enemy knows what square you are in, they still suffer the normal 50% miss chance on their attacks due to total concealment.

No. A spell's area cannot extend beyond its range.

A spell’s range indicates how far from you it can reach, as defined in the Range entry of the spell description. A spell’s range is the maximum distance from you that the spell’s effect can occur, as well as the maximum distance at which you can designate the spell’s point of origin. If any portion of the spell’s area would extend beyond this range, that area is wasted.

A 143 side-note

And this is what makes the ever popular Giant Rat 1st level encounters so infuriating. You don't have the resources to get the disease removed, you can almost guarantee at least one party member will fail a Fort save, and the only way to beat the disease is sit around for days on end making Fort save and/or Heal checks.

I can't remember the last character I have had from first level that didn't fight giant rats at least once. They seem to be hard wired into low-level adventures! :smallyuk:

[/RANT]

I've had a few that didn't, but I agree, disease is somewhat more debilitating than is really appropriate for 1st-level play. I suppose it gives an impetus to get on with the adventure (since you could hope to complete the adventure before the incubation period ends, and then just get the disease taken care of between adventures).

Q144: Normally, creatures don't block line and effect and line of sight, they can only provide cover.
However, if a character is inside an ooze thanks to the Amulet of Ooze Riding, rather than behind it, and assuming the ooze is fairly transparent and allows to see through it (which is explicitly the case for the Gelatinous Cube):

1. Does the character get total cover ?

2. Is line of effect blocked ?

3. More generally, if I want to attack through a solid but transparent obstacle, my line of effect would be blocked (since there is a solid obstacle), and by RAW, since line of sight is strictly included into line of effect, it should be blocked too, contrary to common sense.
Is this correct ?

Thank you.

2. Yes

Line of Effect
A line of effect is a straight, unblocked path that indicates what a spell can affect. A line of effect is canceled by a solid barrier. It’s like line of sight for ranged weapons, except that it’s not blocked by fog, darkness, and other factors that limit normal sight.

You must have a clear line of effect to any target that you cast a spell on or to any space in which you wish to create an effect. You must have a clear line of effect to the point of origin of any spell you cast.

A burst, cone, cylinder, or emanation spell affects only an area, creatures, or objects to which it has line of effect from its origin (a spherical burst’s center point, a cone-shaped burst’s starting point, a cylinder’s circle, or an emanation’s point of origin).

An otherwise solid barrier with a hole of at least 1 square foot through it does not block a spell’s line of effect. Such an opening means that the 5-foot length of wall containing the hole is no longer considered a barrier for purposes of a spell’s line of effect.

1.Yes

Total Cover
If you don’t have line of effect to your target he is considered to have total cover from you. You can’t make an attack against a target that has total cover.

3. No. LoS and LoE are distinctly different and not tied together at all.

Total Concealment
If you have line of effect to a target but not line of sight he is considered to have total concealment from you. You can’t attack an opponent that has total concealment, though you can attack into a square that you think he occupies. A successful attack into a square occupied by an enemy with total concealment has a 50% miss chance (instead of the normal 20% miss chance for an opponent with concealment).

You can’t execute an attack of opportunity against an opponent with total concealment, even if you know what square or squares the opponent occupies.

Q 145

Do undead have any kind of default immunity to polymorph effects? I could have sworn they do, but looking at creatures types, only oozes and plants seem to have this. Maybe I'm thinking of specific undead such as liches? Is there a rule parsing that I'm missing?

Q 146 :

About A 144. The SRD explains that "A line of effect is canceled by a solid barrier". In substance, A 144 explains that his does not opt out animated barriers, like big, hulking creatures. This is why a Gelatinous Cube filling all the width and height of a corridor blocks line of effect between two characters on the opposite sides of the Cube.
But the Cube is transparent, and does not block line of sight. So :

Does a gaze attack need line of effect in addition to line of sight ? In particular, can a gaze attack affect a character through a Gelatinous Cube ?

Q 140a:
Is there a subtype similar to Living Construct that exists for Undead creatures?

No.

Q&A 140a addendum:

Troacctid is correct, but please note that Eberron lore notes Woeforged as a thing - even though they are never backed up with rules or mechanics. So the setting supports something that is more-or-less exactly what you are asking for, but won't say to what extent or how.

CF Forge of War page 85 for what exceedingly little information is given on them.

A 145: No, but if you're using the normal spell chain they happen not to qualify until you get up to Polymorph Any Object (they fail the lower level spells by virtue of not being living or the spells granting fortitude saves).

A 145
Undead don't have a default immunity to polymorph effects, however the majority of polymorph effects allow a fortitude save, which undead have a blanket immunity to, unless they can affect items or are harmless (just like constructs). Thus, most polymorph effects would fail, unless one specifically has a different save, or allows no save.

Lore Question.
Q 146: I remember seeing some fluff about Hobgoblins considering their equipment an extension or reflection of themselves or something like that. That if a Hobgoblins sword was rusty or dull, he was. Anyone know where this was from?

Q. 147

Eladrins from the MM are immune to petrification and electricity, according to their SRD.

Would a summoned Bralani Eladrin, affected by Flesh to Ice (a secondary effect from the Frostfell spell in Frostburn), consider that a Petrification effect and thus be immune?

If he isn't immune and becomes an ice statue, is he considered dead and whisked away as per any slain summon or in statue form until the spell expires and then sent back to whatever plane it came from?

A147
The definition of Petrification in 3.5 only states stone, so Flesh to Ice does not count as Petrification. So the Eladrin is not Immune. Flesh to Ice also specifically states that the creature is not dead, as such the Eladrin is not slain and will remain for the duration of the spell.

Q148

Do all ranged attacks provoke an attack of opportunity? Or just attacks with a ranged weapon? For example, does someone casting dimensional anchor provoke twice? Once from casting and once from firing the ray? What about supernatural abilities that have a ranged attack roll?

Q.149

If someone with skirmish or sneak attack successfully feints as a move action and hits someone in melee and the attacked on his turn attempts (and fails) a Tumble check to avoid an AoO, is that tumbler subjected to a melee attack with skirmush/sneack attack in the AoO, or is it regular damage?

Feinting only denies the target their dexterity to ac for your next melee attack, not for any additional attacks made before the start of your next turn.

I've had trouble understanding the question so here's the answer to my other interpretation; that you feint in combat and get the feint boon on someone who provokes an AoO.
Feint is a targetted combat maneuver. If you attack anyone but the person you feinted, you don't get the benefit.

I should have been clearer: it's a 1 vs. 1 fight. The attacker feinted successfully and got to catch the opponent with additional damage.

That opponent decided to Tumble and flopped the Tumble DC, subjecting himself to an AoO from the feinting opponent who hit him.

Q150

Do all monsters add 1 stat point to any score upon attaining 4th HD and every fourth HD they attain afterwards (8th, 12th etc.)? Please note that I'm talking about HD, not about class advancement. Like for instance, I made a 8-HD ghast (they are normally 4 HD). Does it get a stat point?
