Sayuri, Chase and Tristan in Goldenrod City

By foot, rail or just rolling out of bed, the three of you have made your way to Goldenrod city, greatest city of Johto, and hub of business, travel and news.

The Goldenrod gym though dominates the centre of the city and today is even busier than usual: Whitney, who takes great care in the nurturing of new trainers is gathering young hopefuls to her gym in order to give them a gift before their journey starts, or so say the news stations and online news outlets streaming straight to the various televisual displays that abound in the city. There is even talk of a surprise celebrity guest appearance, which might draw out even the more experienced trainers.

Tristan has been impatiently waiting for this meeting with Whitney ever since they started making the PSA on the radio.

On this day, Tristan rolls out of bed excitedly and hurries through his regular morning routine. Tristan lets Cyan out of its pokeball in order to get it pumped up for the day as well. Together they make their way over to the gym, standing outside for some time to take in the full scope of the momentous occasion. Without any worries or extra thought, Tristan leads Cyan into the gym and waits for any further instruction, his eyes darting around the magnificent gym.

The sound of an alarm clock going off woke Chase from his slumber, and the young man slowly began lifting himself out of bed, rubbing his eyes to fully wake himself up. He slowly walked towards the bathroom, ready to start his morning rituals.

A half hour later, a much more awake Chase Jackson walked back into his room, fully dressed and ready to start his day. Reaching for his belt, the new trainer grabbed a Pokeball and, with the press of a switch, released his Elekid from it's confines. The Electric Pokemon appeared on the floor, it's bulky arms raised in the air. "Elekid, Ele!"

Smiling, Chase picked his starter up and placed her on his shoulder. "You ready to head out to the gym Elekid?" From her position, the Pokemon moved her arm into a sloppy salute, nodding her head in agreement. "That's what I thought, let's get going then!"

The two left the Poke Center and started walking towards the Goldenrod City Gym, curious as to just who the mystery guest was going to be.

Sayuri

So that's a... er... left up ahead? Or is it a right? Stupid maps. Why is everywhere you want to go right on the folds?

In the city (probably) a young woman is fighting with a paper map, and losing. Her long, blue twin tails tugged by the errant breeze that's trying to fold the map she's looking at in half. She's wearing jeans, calf-high boots and a jacket over a shirt. She's also got several camera bags and a rucksack. Not to mention a growlithe on a lead who has taken the brief respite as an opportunity to sit down and have a rest.

"Okay, I think we're getting close. Another street or two, maybe. I just wish people'd use signposts in this city," the woman groans with a noticeable Hoennese accent, and looks up, scanning for street names.

Then she spots the building across the street. The large one that says GYM in large letters across the front, and has people going in and out of it. Oh, and signs. Many signs.

She looks down at the growlithe.

"...You knew about that, didn't you?" she says accusingly. "You just let me look like a twit on purpose,"

She sighs, and tugs on the lead as she starts to cross the road. After looking both ways, obviously.

"Come on," she says. "Let's see if we ain't too late for good seats,"

Each of the three arrives at the gym with varying levels of composure, but all miraculously just ahead of the crowds. Sayuri has to squeeze in, but manages it just before a group of Whitney's trainers (denoted by the pink ribbons on their arms) moves in to stop more trainers surging in.

The inside of the gym is indeed magnificent: the building itself has an almost impossibly high ceiling to accommodate various walls that run through the place providing smaller areas, presumably for individuals to train. But there is no training going on today: the gym is filled with young trainers either looking ready to march into the wilderness, or still being fussed over by their parents.

One of the ribboned-trainers moved through the crowd and called to the three trainers who were standing near the entrance. "Hi there, can I take your names? Whitney will be coming on stage in a second and I just need to get all your details."

Shadowz1797

Tristan doesn't hear the question at first, too lost in the magnificence and beauty of the gym interior itself. After he hears those talking around him, he jumps and says "Oh! S-Sorry, I didn't hear you, I'm just so excited y'know? Oh right my name, I'm Tristan, Tristan Zephyr that is."

He then runs his fingers through the side of his hair, clearly embarrassed that those next to him stood witness to his zoning out.

Seeing that the Gym was starting to fill up, Chase quickened his pace, just managing to make it through the doors before a number of gym trainers started closing the doors. Grinning at his good luck, the trainer looked up to see another one of Whitney's trainers approaching. Hearing her question, the Ecruteak native was quick to answer, knowing that it was necessary for the show to start. "My name's Chase Jackson. Man, good thing we got here when we did right?" He looked back at the closed doors, suddenly especially glad that he'd set his alarm as early as he did.

Sayuri

That was some real good timing, there, Sayuri muses as she scoops up Teddy - complete with a spirits-you're-heavy grunt - to get him out of the way of accidental kicks and trips.

"Sayuri Tentin," Sayuri replies to the inquisitive gym trainer, vaguely wondering why it's in any way important. "Think I got a press badge somewhere, if it's any help..." she adds, trying to balance an exceedingly heavy growlithe, who is going on a diet after this, while patting down her pockets and trying to remember just where she put the thing. Probably at the bottom of the backpack, come to think of it.

"Not to worry Ms Tentin, all are more than welcome," he beamed back, though he glanced at the doors with a slight grimace. "Sorry, first time we've done this: weren't expecting so many people. Those PR guys really did a good job." He glanced at his watch then added: "Thanks for those details, Whitney should be coming out just about... now!"

And as he said the last word the lights dimmed and Whitney stepped out onto one of the many raised walls in the gym, which afforded everyone a good look at the gym leader. There was a surprising burst of applause and cheering, which Whitney appeared to be embarrassed by.

"Thank you everybody, thank you. Thank you all for being here today."

"I know it's a very special day for a lot of you here: the day you start your very own pokemon journey. Well congratulations and good luck, I say! I wanted everyone to have a chance to raise their own pokemon and have adventures just like I did: though maybe a bit safer, hahaha.

"That's why, with the help of our celebrity guest, we'll be handing out a pokemon to each of our young trainers along with a brand new pokedex! Thank you, thank you, now without further ado, the man without whom none of this would be possible: Mr Pokemon himself!"

The crowd cheered Whitney's generosity as an old man in an expensive looking suit hobbled out on stage beside the charming gym leader. A spotlight followed him and he stood for a while, waving at the crowd.

"Thank you, thank you. As the lovely lady has said, we are offering one young pokemon and one pokedex to each and everyone of you. Both the pokeball and the pokedex are state of the art, with specialist technology designed to keep you as safe as possible on your pokemon journey. Our lovely young assistants have taken your details, so please, line up in an orderly manner and receive our gifts. We wish you all the best with your futures."

The pair departed and the lights brightened once again. The ribboned-trainers then began ushering the assembled trainers into queues towards some tables at the far end of the room. The three ended up in one queue together, packed tightly by the assembled crowd.

Chase applauded along with the rest of of the audience, the Elekid on his shoulder making her own attempt at the same (to be fair, she did a fairly good job given that she didn't have any hands).

When Whitney announced that everyone there would be receiving a Pokemon and Pokedex, his applause grew a bit more spirited. Even if you saw this as just a publicity stunt, you had to admit that it was a masterstroke. The Normal-Type Gym Leader would certainly be getting an edge in any popularity polls for a bit.

Walking towards the nearest cue at the end of Mr. Pokemon's speech, Chase looked around to see the two trainers who'd entered at about the same time as him right there next to him. "Well, that was quite a show wasn't it? Whitney pulled out all the stops for today."

Shadowz1797

Tristan could not believe his ears when they said the trainers would be getting their own brand new Pokedexes and Pokemon. He came to this event just hoping for a couple useful tips, so for such an amazing gift he was overwhelmed.

He looked at the two nearest to him in queue and couldn't help but have the widest grin.
One of them broke the silence and talked about Whitney pulling out all the stops, to which Tristan responded:

"I've been following this event since word first came out it was happening, and I can't say I ever dreamed that something this amazing would happen! Oh, by the way, the name's Tristan, pleasure to meet you two fellow trainers."

Sayuri

Sayuri blinks. Well, that was a surprise. A free pokemon? Well, hopefully it won't be anything too big, smelly or... er... on fire to live in a small apartment. The offer of a pokedex is nice, too, though a bit less exciting and/or worrying. She'd been meaning to get a new one anyway, since her old one hasn't been working so well since it got dropped in a pond that time - and it was getting pretty beaten up anyway.

And... wait. Trainers? Were those two talking to her?

"Sorry?" Sayuri says, turning to look at the pair, and trying to juggle Teddy in her arms who had - at that most inconvenient of moments - decided to try and lick her face. "Eurgh! Stoppit!" she says, trying to get her face away from the growlithe's tongue. "Sayuri. I'm here as - ack! - a journalist. Sort of. More lookin' for work. Nice to meet you - and Teddy, will you stop that already!"

The three make it to the front of the queue and a beaming Rodge hands over the slim red pokedexes and marks down their names on the list next to an id number. He then turns to a box of pokeballs and hands one to each of the trainers. "Good luck on your adventures! This pokedex has all the information you need to identify wild pokemon, and this pokemon should help keep you safe."

Looking at the pokeballs in their hands, they can all see that these are not standard pokeballs: a sleek, black 'X' shaped harness has been built in over the casing.

The three can see that some of the trainers are already releasing their newly acquired pokemon and the already crowded gym is getting busier by the second.

Sayuri

"Thanks," Sayuri says, taking the pokedex and stuffing it in a pocket with her one free hand, before taking the pokeball. Funny looking thing that it is. "Er... this way, I think," she calls to the other two - might as well be nice to them - as she pushes her way through the crowds to a, well, less crowded spot.

"Let's see what we got, eh, boy?" she says, depositing the (still) incredibly heavy Teddy on the ground in the mercifully clear patch, and rolling her shoulders. "Ow. Seriously, we have got to get you on a diet," she mutters, as she points the pokeball at a clear spot and presses the button.

...Hopefully whatever's in there's tame.

Tristan looks at both the Pokedex and Pokeball with excitement, he can feel both of his palms starting to sweat. The Pokedex was beyond his wildest dreams, in that moment he really felt like he was on his way to accomplishing his goals. Eager to figure out what Pokemon he was given, Tristan follows suit of Sayuri and finds a clear spot to release it. First however, Tristan lets out his Staryu and says "Cyan you won't believe me, but you're about to get a new friend!" as he points to his newly acquired Pokeball. The Staryu looks as excited as a Staryu can look, jumping up for joy, and happily saying "Star-Star!."

Tristan points the ball towards the empty spot and releases the Pokeball.

For Staryu should i go with the anime and have it make a hrreah kind of noise or should i stick with it saying Staryu?

Chase's heart was beating like a drum as they made their way closer to the front of the line. "And my name's Chase, pleased to meet you both."

Taking the offered Pokedex and Pokeball, Chase thanked Rodge before quickly moving out of the way, not wanting to be accused of holding up the line. Once he was out of the way, the Ecruteak native examined both devices carefully. With his knowledge of technology, the man could easily tell that the Pokedex was the work of a genius, both in design and function, and the Ball was unlike anything he'd ever seen before (certainly better than anything he'd made himself).

Moving over to where Sayuri and Tristan were standing, Chase tossed the ball in the air for a moment, catching it easily with the release pointing towards a clear area of the room. "Well, let's see what we've got here shall we?" With that he pressed the release button, both he and his Elekid looking to see what Pokemon they'd received.

With obvious eagerness the group joins the rest of the crowd in releasing their new friends.

With a flash of light a pair of baby pokemon appear in front of Sayuri and Tristan: for Sayuri, a small pink thing with a tiny tuft of hair and for Tristan, a small blue ball with an oversized tail. The pair blink their eyes and glance around shyly.

Edit: In front of chase, an awkward creature appeared with oversized ears and a calm expression.

Just as he is doing so the blue Pokemon cries "Azurill!" as if to introduce itself.

"Ahhh you must be an Azurill. My name's Tristan, this guy here is my buddy Cyan. I should probably ask, do you want a nickname too?"

The Azurill nods in response.

"Fair enough. Don't hate me for the simplicity but how about I call you Azure?"

The Azurill jumps excitedly in acceptance, unable to hold back from screaming "Azu-Azu-Azu!"

"Hmm? Oh, here you go, boy. When the light died down, Chase could see an unfamiliar Pokemon standing in front of him. Not recognizing it at first glance, he pulled out his new Pokedex and pointed it at the Pokemon.

Whismur, the Whisper Pokemon. Normally, Whismur's voice is very quiet-it is barely audible even if one is paying close attention. However, if this Pokémon senses danger, it starts crying at an earsplitting volume.

Closing the Pokedex, Chase knelt down and smiled at the Whismur. "Well hello there, welcome to the team!" Elekid hopped off of his shoulder and began chatting with the new Pokemon, who responded calmly to the Electric Pokemon (Or so he assumed, given that he couldn't understand them).

Chase looked up at Sayuri's question, temporarily turning his attention from his new Pokemon. "Yeah, I'm a trainer. Fresh from Ecruteak City." He gave the woman a curious look, "I believe you said you had a press pass earlier, so are you a reporter?"

The group manages to push their way out of the gym back into the sunlight where they see the crowds dispersing. Joining the rush they manage to get onto the main path heading north and after a short walk come out in the Golden rod park.

To those who haven't seen it before it's a surprising vista of open grass, with fountains and benches dotted throughout. Chase notices that some patches of grass are moving suspiciously and guesses that wild pokemon are lurking in their, but the outer path will keep the group well away from those spots unless they go looking for a fight.

While the park is extremely familiar to Tristan, he looks at it through a new lense. He no longer feels like Tristan the Goldenrod native, but rather Tristan the full-fledged Pokemon Trainer.

Looking around the park it was fairly easy to catch the rustling grass that indicated a Pokemon was hiding within it. At the same time however he could also see a number of other trainers by the stream, and that his two companions were heading off to check them out. As the trio approach the stream they see that the huddle of trainers appear to be focused on what look like fishing rods. Suddenly a large fish pokemon jumps out of the water in one of the rods burbling in it's strange voice "-oldeen!"

The surrounding trainers jump into action and a pair of young pokemon tackle it head on. Another trainer throws a pokeball but misses.

A slightly older boy, around 18 turns to the new arrivals. "Hi there, have you come from Whitney's gym? Plenty of new trainers around today. I'm Seb. These rods have lures on them, so if you're interested in capturing some water pokemon here's the place to be."

In one smooth motion the trainer grabbed a Pokeball from his belt and pulled it back, aiming at their opponent before following through, the ball arcing through the air towards the water type.

Using my Curve Ball Technique to treat my Pokeball as a Struggle attack if it hits. This applies before the capture roll.

The +2 to my accuracy roll comes from the Tools of the Trade Technique.

Seeing his Staryu staggering in confusion from the high pitched noise, Tristan offers words of encouragement. "You can do this Cyan, He just caught you off guard, hit him with another tackle!"

Chase

Without giving the pokemon a moment's respite, Chase catches the wooper with his pokeball. Chase doesn't have long to celebrate though, as he sees that Tristan might be in trouble.

Congrats! Have a female, level 3, cuddly Wooper with Mud Dweller at 30% health and with one injury.

Tristan

Cyan attempts to leap at the Chinchou, but instead crashes to the floor (taking 16 damage, minus 7 for defense, 9). The Chinchou sprays a bubble of water at Cyan, which is powerful but not overly effective against the water type.

Bubble [roll0] Speed is lowered one CS
Damage [roll1] x0.5 = 11 - SDef (7) = 4 damage

I assume we round up, but couldn't find it in the rules

Sayuri

While the other two play in the water or, well, whatever it is they're doing that's resulting in so much splashing, Sayuri quietly sits on a bench and pulls out a brush and a red rubber ball. One of which she gently applies to the Igglybuff, and the other that she throws for Teddy. After retrieving the brush from Teddy, and registering Fidget's objections to being rubbed with a slightly chewed rubber ball, she decides that maybe paying a little more attention to the task at hand might be prudent.

She still pauses, occasionally, to snap the odd photo of the water-borne melee when it looks or sounds particularly exciting. But Fidget takes well to being brushed and Teddy... takes as well to being brushed as he ever does, which is to say he'll sit nicely until he gets bored and then attempts to eat the brush. Sayuri also has ample opportunity to learn that young igglybuff do not really grasp the concept of fetch very well.

Once Fidget and Teddy are as groomed as they're going to get, Sayuri picks herself up and wanders over to the grass with camera in hand. There may be something interesting in there, after all, and it would be ridiculous to pass up the opportunity. Fidget totters and Teddy trots after her.

Adding the Park to Sayuri's travel album for 1 AP and an extended action!

Also, using the Grooming time to apply Agility Training and Experience Training to both pokemon, and adding Special Attack Conflict to Fidget since Iggly/Jiggly/Wigglytuff don't really get an SpAtk moves.

A small smile appeared on Chase's face as the Pokeball closed around the Wooper, the sphere wobbling for a moment before coming to a stop. Chase immediately stepped over to the ball and picked it up, already making plans to head to the Pokemon Center after this. Elekid had taken a few hits, and his newly caught Pokemon hadn't looked too great by the end of the battle either.

Turning to see how Tristan was doing in his battle, he noticed that the teen wasn't doing quite as well as he had. "Need a hand Tristan?" he asked as he placed the Wooper's Pokeball on his belt.

Tristan winces as he sees the hit his Staryu takes.

Responding to Chase he says "If you don't mind!" He was reluctant to say it at first as he didn't want to sound weak, but relying on Chase beat Cyan getting knocked out any day.

"Cyan, let's give him some pay back!"

"Alright then, Elekid," Chase looked down at his first Pokemon, "Use Quick Attack on that Pokemon!"

The Electric Pokemon followed her trainer's command, rushing towards the Chinchou at a rapid speed.

Tristan and Chase

Elekid sprints in and delivers a blow before either of the participants realises he's there: his blow is powerful, and the chinchou takes a deep gash across its face. Unfortunately, Cyan still appears confused, and strikes itself a blow. The Chinchou flails at Elekid in retaliation.

Cyan takes (12 -7 for defense) 5 damage from its tackle.

The Chinchou's flailing, while random in nature, managed to accomplish what the Pokemon wanted. One of it's antennae struck Elekid in the face and the Electric Pokemon, still wounded from the battle with the Wooper, fell to the ground in a faint. Alarmed by this turn of events, Chase quickly held out the Pokemon's ball. "Elekid, return!" he called, a beam of light enveloping his first Pokemon and recalling her to safety.

Turning to Tristan, the Survivalist nodded his head. "I think you should be able to handle the rest of this battle. Good luck to you!" With that, Chase stepped back, watching the battle from a safe distance.

Looking at his Staryu, Tristan has a split second moment of indecision. He's been pushing Cyan so hard, should he maybe just let him take a break and swap in Azure?

Then, as if almost reading his mind, Cyan lets out a battle cry to encourage Tristan, wanting nothing other than to fight for its trainer.

"Alright then Cyan, let's try something new! Hit it with a Water Gun!"
