I just noticed that in 3.5 the SoH skill notes that it can be used as a perform skill. Does that mean it can be used to qualify for the bardic music ability? Does this lead to any... nice things?

You can also use Sleight of Hand to entertain an audience as though you were using the Perform skill.

The "as though" here only refers to entertaining an audience. It doesn't seem to give access to bardic music abilities, which require levels in bard and ranks in a Perform skill.

It just means that you can use make sleight of hand checks when performing as a street magician, or running a shell game, to earn money, in the same way a bard can make perform checks to raise money performing his songs or playing music, or whatever.

That's too bad. I was kind of itching to build a magician :P

It is still a great skill for a bard.

Perform (magic show)?

Perform (magic show)?

Not technically allowed RAW, since the bardic music feature presents an explicit list of the things that activated.

But from a balance perspective, as long as the magic show makes about as much noise as a musical performance or poetry recitation, it should play identically!

Even though the Perform skill may list explicit subcategories, there may be some wiggle room. Oratory, for example, could be any kind of spoken word performance, and acting could potentially be anything, since you can "act" like a musician, singer, or magician.

Perform (acting)(like a magician).

"In this, our finest hour, we shall pull our enemies entrails from their their soft underbellies!"

*pulls neverending colored hankercheif chain out from cumberbun

"We shall lob off their leaders head!"

*Takes off top hat*

"And pull untold riches from their corpses"

*pulls rabbit out of hat

"We shall saw them in half!"

*saws rabbit in half

"And our morally dubious but totally lawful neutral necromancer will sew them back together again, thus adding them to our teams power!"

*puts sawed rabbit back together

Wouldn't that essentially be Perform (Mime)?
