View Full Version : Chess - Ruslan challenges GitP - Game on!

So, I decided to challenge the entire collective intellect of GitP to a game of chess. Team GitP will probably need a Captain, or someone to lead the discussion. I will, of course, only use my own brain (no computer chess program usage - and expect team GitP to abide by this as well). The Captain is welcome to open a team discussion thread (which I will not read), or discuss with the team by PM, whichever works.

After a Captain is found, we'll randomly draw for colors. For time control, I was thinking something like 3 days per move - enough to have a good discussion.

So, any volunteers to lead this on behalf of GitP?

UPDATE: Game started, first moves are on page 2. Forum team discussion thread here:

Given the title of this thread, let's put the game in here...

I'm willing to play, although I probably shouldn't lead. I believe I play rather differently to most on this forum, and we'll want someone who can control the discussion more than I can.

Can you help out with advertising and recruitment to the GitP team then?

I'll play, although I should probably not be the captain. I can put an ad for this match in my signature to recruit other players.

Well, in the absence of a floor general...or minions...

I like three days as a time control. Should we do signups proper, or play with whoever comes to the thread?

Whoever turns up is fine with me. Although on second thought signups might create a more dedicated roster ...

Lethologica
2016-09-08, 04:29 PM
Mostly I'm just looking for a way to get people who might be interested to actually express it, so we can get some kind of activity in here. I might be optimizing the wrong part of the pipeline, though.

Also, fun fact: when you update your signature, it updates your sig in old posts, but when you make a sig, it doesn't. This makes sense--the signature block of each post is just whatever the current sig is, but posts without a signature don't have a sig block in the first place. But I've been hanging around here for six years and didn't notice that, so, you learn something new every day, I guess.

Don't stay out of it! The great thing about chess is that that we can explain our thinking. Or we could if we were competent.

Seconded on adding your voice no matter the skill level. Never know when you'll see something.

Although, come to think of it, how are we going to deal with that? Are we going to spin off a discussion thread to give privacy to the deliberations of the hive-mind? (Or do it the other way around, with this as the discussion thread, and a spinoff game thread.)

Thirded! I mean, I can explain my thinking, but I don't really have that playing chess skill that's fairly important.

We could use QuickTopic (https://www.quicktopic.com); it's a free chat-site that's used for private communication in WW games here ITP. If we wanted the team to be able to communicate strategy privately, but didn't want to fill up everybody's inbox with tons of PMs, that'd be a decent way to do it. I'd just create a topic when the game started and PM a link to everybody on the team, and things could progress from there.

Either of these would be fine with me, but I'll give preference to the spinoff thread because it's more open to new players and I'm willing to count on Ruslan not peeking. If people agree, I'll make a discussion thread. (It should be in Message Board Games, right?) We can keep a game record and a snapshot of the current board state in the OP.

We can make a separate game thread, or not, it probably won't make any difference.

there was stuff here but it's not relevant anymore

Ruslan
2016-09-16, 01:35 PM
Let's roll then. You guys are white. Make a new thread or continue this one. If you make a discussion thread onsite, I promise not to read.

Basic rules:

- No use of computers for analysis, ever. Human-brain-based analysis only.
- 3 days per move. Going slightly over the limit is acceptable (I, for one, will not make a fuss over it), but continuous and egregious flaunting of the time limits may lead to forfeit.
- Team GitP may continue recruiting new members as game is ongoing.

The team has a number of options mapped out but no one's actually stepped forward to make the move yet.

If no one else has acted by 5 PM tomorrow I'll look at the consensus and vote whatever the majority is at that time.

I can't speak for the rest of the team but I've had other problems to worry about (https://weather.com/news/news/hurricane-matthew-southeast-updates); I only just got back power today.

Nobody responded on the discussion site, I suspect due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Hopefully a 1 day delay would be acceptable given the holiday?

I offer a draw

Markozeta
2017-01-03, 12:37 AM
I'll propose it to the group. If you want, I would be happy to reduce the time frame (with the group's consensus) since we're in the endgame, as there isn't as many forks for us to vote on. Yet I'd agree personally that I don't see this going any place but a draw (I was still curious to see some endgame skills though, personally - but the group vote format really isn't suited for the rapid play style of the endgame).
