View Full Version : Proposed Conditional Spell Feat (5e)

I have also been toying with the idea of a Conditional Spell metamagic feat:

Conditional Spell: In order to make a spell conditional the caster expends two spell slots. Each must be at least equal to the level of the spell to be made conditional. Doing so has the following effects:

• The spell can be given a simple triggering effect: For example, “Trigger at midnight tonight” or “Trigger when Eidrich Ironfist enters the room.”

o The spell triggers as if the caster/player were awake, alert, and in the location watching (thus the DM may make a perception roll in some cases). Thus the trigger could be fooled. If the player cannot see an invisible NPC at the time that the spell would be triggered, and if Ironfist is invisible, then the spell would not trigger.
• The spell takes twice as long to cast.

o If the spell to be made conditional has a duration of “concentration” then the player must concentrate for a duration equal to the spell’s effect in addition to the casting time.
o If the spell’s effect is variable, that effect must be specified at the time of casting.
• The slot that is expended for the spell that is to be made conditional cannot be recharged until either the spell is triggered or the caster willingly dismisses the spell. Thus this feat does not effectively give the player extra spells per day.

o The caster is aware of the spell being triggered (though not its ultimate effects), thus knows if she can recharge her slot.
• The caster can have number of conditional spells active equal to her proficiency bonus.

Optional: Sorcerers can expend 4 points to make a spell conditional even without taking this feat.

Sorcerers automatically gaining the ability to use a metamagic without learning it feels very strange. I'd like this more if sorcerers had this added their list of available metamagic options instead.

EDIT: Just noticed that the automatic addition is optional. However, this ability is thematically weird for a sorcerer to have, especially automatically, since they're usually more chaotic and less planning based.
