I engage with the Snark—
every night after dark—
in a dreamy, delirious fight….

Lewis Carroll, "The Hunting of the Snark"

I'm running a campaign starting at first level, and for plot reasons I'd like to introduce dreamscapes and combat within dreams.

Are there any rules covering this sort of thing? I'm aware I can run an ordinary combat and gloss it as a dream, but I'd like to know if there are specific rules for this situation, especially anything creative and unusual. I'm open to all official 3.5 and Pathfinder content.

As far as I'm aware, there are no additional rules for dream combat, so as long as your players keep the planar traits of the Region of Dreams in mind (subjective directional gravity, the 10:1 time ratio of the Region of Dreams to the material plane, highly morphic dreamspace, all spells of the illusion school are extended), they should be able to fight like they always have.

Heroes of Horror has a section on dreamscape adventures. PF's Occult Adventures is probably worth a look, and there may be some Dal Quor stuff in the Eberron books that could be worth adapting.

Manual of the Planes, pages 201-204. There's even a skill for it.
