Random ideas of magical items with abilities that aren't too overpowered. Gifts that can be given to your adventurers without resulting in the Christmas Tree effect.

The Shadow Dagger is more of something that an enemy might use against you. If the party Rogue wants it, let him take it. But it does have its consequences...

Trident of Sekolah
Uncommon
History. This weapon is crafted by Sahuagin blacksmiths, wielded by the most skillful warriors of the tribe as a symbol of their status and power. The trident is decorated with shark teeth undergone special rituals of blood and frenzy, and has Sahuagin letters carved into the hilt that praise the deity of bloodshed, giving this trident its unique abilities.
Since the Sahuagin do not worry about how to fight after their enemies have been wounded, the Trident of Sekolah is crafted so that it will always damage the foe, no matter whether the attack hits its exact mark or not. This owes to its distinct shape, and the sharp shark teeth that jut out in all directions - by the time you are chosen as the target of this weapon’s attack, you are destined to bleed, no matter how tiny the amount may be. And by the time you have shed blood, you are already doomed, for a single drop of blood is enough to plunge the vicious Sahuagin into a mad frenzy.
The blessings of Sekolah also makes this weapon suitable for harming elves, the Sahuagins' mortal enemies. With divine power surging through this weapon, it is near impossible for elves to save themselves from being skewered to death by this weapon of savage glory.
Effects. When you make an attack with this weapon against a target who has all his hit points, even if you miss with the attack, you inflict piercing damage to the target equal to your Strength modifier.
When you make an attack with this weapon against an elf, add 1d4 to your attack roll. Also, if the 1d4 results in a 4, regardless of the attack roll, the attack is treated as a critical hit.

Shadow Dagger
Uncommon
History. Long ago, when a great number of Shadows overwhelmed the lands and terrorized the people, increasing and increasing in number as they regrew from the corpses of the victims, a powerful and renowned Archmage who sought to save the people discovered arcane words of binding that can trap the Shadow into an ordinary object, thus rendering it harmless. This wonderful discovery led to the convergence of the vile epidemic, and the Archmage marked his name in history.
However, not a decade after this incident, arcane criminal organizations across the lands started utilizing a new type of magical weapon in combat and in “peaceful” negotiation - the Shadow Dagger.
The Shadow Dagger is created in the exact same way as the original ritual of concealment that the Archmage discovered. What’s different is that in the Shadow Dagger’s case, the undead entity is not sealed into a harmless object, but rather into an enchanted obsidian blade. The result is that whoever is damaged by the blade has his life force sapped by the Shadow, still very intact and writhing within the dagger, urging to drain the vitality of the living.
The Archmage, struck by shock of what he had unleashed, attempted to put an end to this unwanted outcome. However, his dire attempts ended in vain - by the most cruel destiny, he was assassinated by being stabbed endless times by these cursed daggers, sapping him of all strength and turning him into a Shadow himself.
Certain cults and criminal organizations still use this weapon in combat, to physically weaken those they fight, and to strike fear into the hearts of enemies. However, not all of those who wield this weapon understand what they're paying in return - those who kill with this weapon are destined to suffer a fate much worse than death. Centuries have passed since the death of the Archmage, but the terrible tragedies the Shadow Dagger create are yet to come to an end.
Effects. This weapon has 5 charges. Once per round, when you inflict damage with this weapon in dim light or darkness, you can expend 1 charge to reduce the target's Strength score by 1d4. The target dies if this reduces its Strength to 0. Otherwise, the reduction lasts until the target finishes a short or long rest. 1d4 charges are restored when you finish a long rest.
If a non-evil humanoid dies from this attack, a new shadow rises from the corpse 1d4 hours later.
Curse. If a humanoid who has ever killed a sentient being using this weapon dies, a new shadow rises from the corpse 1d4 hours later. Being targeted by the remove curse spell or similar magic saves you from this fate.

Comments and constructive critisism greatly appreciated. I mean, really, just saying "this is cool" makes us homebrewers pretty happy.
