Rax tightens his grip on his rapier as he leads the group back to the room with the low growling. "Whatever's back there, it's not like anything I've ever heard." He waits until the group is assembled around the door before prowling to the side and preparing to open it. "Ready? 3... 2... 1..." He throws the door open at the end of his countdown, stepping back to allow his allies clear shots at whatever lies beyond.

Gilraen nods, unhappy but firm and stoic in his demeanor. "We will return as soon as we are able, Shallelu. There is another Goblin out here- a druid of sorts, though now without his companion. I do not think he will dare disturb you, but it would be foolish to let down your guard unduly." He marches just in front of Filibert, allowing Rax and Sminerano to continue scouting ahead on their way back in.

Back in the dungeon, Gilraen nods towards the door from which the growling emits. He lifts his bow. "On your mark, Rax."

As Rax approaches the door to fling it open, Filibert sidles up atop his steed, shield and lance in hand. Sensing his master's coiled posture, Growler lets slip a low growl and crouches, prepared to dart into the room!

If possible, I'd like Growler and Filibert to charge during a surprise round if one takes place and movement allows; if so, Filibert gains +4 on his attack while suffering no penalty to his AC, and Lance deals double damage. Growler gains +2 to his attack, but suffers -2 penalty to AC.

Begin Combat

Rax shifts up the stairs and opens the door to a platform about two feet off the ground of the rest of the room. Hanging braziers surround the platform, and emit glowing red smoke, giving the place an unnerving crimson lighting that throws the bas-relief carvings of countless monsters feasting on fleeing humans into lurid display. A black marble altar stone, its surface heaped with ashes and bone fragments, squats before a ten-foot-tall statue. The sculpture depicts a very pregnant but otherwise shapely naked woman who wields a kukri in each taloned hand and has a long reptilian tail, birdlike taloned feet, and the snarling head of a three-eyed jackal with a forked tongue. The left kukri flickers with fiery orange light while the right one glows with a cold blue radiance.

At the eastern entrance to the room, stone fonts containing frothy dark water sit to the north and south. Twin banks of stone pillars run the length of the long chamber. Then Rax spots it, a creepy ash-gray goblin-like creature with empty eye sockets and scraggly, stained teeth, pressing itself against the altar stone as if a living gargoyle. Rax points it out and it hisses in a strange language.

Intruderss.....You must leave this place!

Then, it rambles incoherently and quietly. The entire room seems to whisper back, but you're not sure if it's echoes or something else.

From your positioning, none of your shots are viable without more serious training (Improved Precise Shot would be necessary to hit Y1)

Rax has fallen under the effect of evil eye (-2 saves), 4 rounds.

As the team's presence is clearly noticed by... something, but no immediate attack is forthcoming, Sminerano hesitates. "What was that?" He asks the others in the front line.

Rax quickly steps out of the doorway and begins rummaging in this pack, his eyes wide with fright. "Some kind of stony....
goblin... thing. It saw me!" After several seconds he produces a rolled up scroll and begins frantically freeing it from its casing, shooting nervous glances at the doorway as he does so.

Have you already rolled initiatives for us, Shadowsend? If not, Rax's will be [roll0]

5ft step to U/18 and then dig the scroll of flaming sphere out of Rax's pack (with shortbow/buckler in the offhand).

Gilraen steps into Rax's vacated space. "Filibert, your presence is requested at the creepy altar." He looses an arrow into the room before sidling to the side to allow the mounted Halfling to pass.

As his companion does so, the lithe Elf muses, "Does that thing look questionably alive to anyone else?" He draws another arrow, this one with a glittering iron tip.

Filibert's poised posture relaxes somewhat, and he looks at Gilraen with a confused look for a heartbeat. The light of comprehension erupts in the halfling's eyes, and with a suddenly fierce exuberance and a barked, "Right!" the halfling charges!

I don't think a Charge is actually possible here, but if so... +4 on attack and no penalty to AC for Filibert. Growler only gets a +2 and retains the -2 penalty to AC.

Move to V,15. Filibert attacks on the way with his lance, and Growler with a bite!

The strange eyeless being is unprepared for Growler and Filibert's rush into the sanctuary, and is knocked to the ground by Growler's toothy jab. The arrows from the rest of the party fail to hit at the strange angle they're fired. The creature stands being more mindful of Growler but is rapped soundly by Filibert's gauntlet. It begins chanting in a strange language, and Filibert feels the air seethe around him, but nothing happens.

Some force seems to repel the steel at the last second, and the creature does not look as wounded as you expect.

Rax is still evil eyed for 3 rounds. Filibert avoided an effect.

The geography of this area means you guys should probably enter the room if you want shots that don't grant cover to your target because you're shooting from the bottom of a stairs.
Sorry if I didn't make that clear before.

"That won't work..." Sminerano mutters in frustration. He reloads his crossbow, then climbs the stairs up to the platform, and jumps off it to take position in the center of the room. He frowns, trying to remember if he's ever read anything about such a strange creature.

Filibert flinches involuntarily against the strange energy that had briefly surrounded him, and then lets slip a throaty growl as the creature seems to shrug off the blow of his cestus. "Rax, get in here! We'll have him surrounded!!" Circling the creature deliberately, Filibert drops his lance and shield, readying his bardiche with one hand and lashing out with the cestus-clad other. Almost in unison with his small rider, Growler darts forward, snapping at the foul creature's legs!

Rax curses as he abandons his plans with the scroll but follows Filibert's exhortation, drawing his rapier as he moves into position next to the halfling. He calls upon his luck to guide his blade as he strikes quickly, scarcely pausing to aim.

With measured steps, he climbs the stairs behind Sminerano and draws his bow again- quite close to the intended target. Gilraen starts briefly, as Rax's blade flashes with obvious magic. He scowls, unable to recall anything useful about this particular demon. At the risk of voicing the obvious, he calls out, "Cold iron would be more damaging, if anyone has any." Against his own advice, he stows his bow and pulls out a thoroughly mundane blade as he climbs the stairs to join in the fray.
