Brief Introduction

MLP: Friendship Is Magic is a reboot of the MLP franchise by Powerpuff Girls artist Lauren Faust. The show's writing and production engendered a large fanbase outside of the intended target audience.

This long-running thread is not only a place to discuss MLP, both official releases and the vast array of fanworks, but has become a mini-community in and of itself.

It's a clever show. It has excellent writing, character dynamics, humor, animation, and generally treats kids seriously rather than condescending to them. It has every right to be a 20 minute corporate committee designed infomercial, but it's not.

> If I want to get into the show, where do I start?

A good starting point is to watch the episodes in order. The show is available on Netflixs in many countries, but, at a pinch, can usually be found with some searching one youtube or dailymotion. Search for "Friendship is Magic Episode 1" and you should find the series pretty easily.

Does anyone have any tips for adding characters of the colored-outline thick-line animation style to still photographs, and having the results look good? I.e.: shopping MLP characters into real life still photographs and having the lighting/shading look good.

Reduce the saturation a little. Ponies tend to be bright colors and the real world... well maybe on the Vegas strip, but otherwise...

Maybe Ponyville's buckers are just pretty good by the standards of the sport (if you want precedent, Maud is a much better bucker than Dash, and probably also has an edge on AJ), but their dark-horse catchers are exceptional?

Exactly. I really don't like them trying to shoehorn Fluttershy into athletic episodes. We saw the same thing with the relay in the Equestria Games. Could Ponyville really not manage anypony better? (Which might make sense if all the Pegasi ended up playing for Cloudsdale. Afterall they almost all spent some time living in that city. But it still seems like a stretch.) It really feels like a forced narrative in order to follow the meme of the weak player becoming great or something.

I know it's not really pony related, but I'm super hyped for Kaladesh, the upcoming M:tG set. It's got a lot of new mechanics (Energy counters! Vehicles! Servo tokens!), but I'm thrilled that they're bringing back Dwarves. There's only a handful of Dwarves in magic (less than 40, as compared to the 300+ that Elves got), and there haven't been any dwarven support cards since Homelands, over 20 years ago! The fact that dwarves are a thing again makes me smile.

Ohh, steady on, chaps; that was almost an actual analysis as opposed to a parody of one...!

Personally, I liked that episode, but again, Spike fan, which biases me (in the same way I can enjoy the SW prequels on account of haviong the perspective of of an Imperial Loyalist).

So, I started watching W.i.t.c.h. again. Been a while since I last watched it and I wondered if it still held up.

Yeah, yeah it does; and this is only season one (season two was where it really shone). Actually, it a some of ways, it sort of has some elements in common with pony (albiet the adventure episodes).

Really, I think the biggest critism I can lay on it is that the musical score is not composed for each episode individually (like a lot of cartoon shows - say - Pokémon - it uses and repeats themes) and what's there is only okay (Pokémon's soundtrack is generally abso-fracking-loutely awesome, of course). But that's splitting hairs a bit; I just think that maybe becaue W.i.t.c.h is otherwise so good it feels like it should have a better soundtrack (or maybe a bit more varity, that might be the problem). And all that, I imagine, came down to budgetary issues and those from it being treated like a red-headed step-child. (They never even releases the season season on DVD properly, for frack's sake. Not even sure they releases more than the first volume of season one stateside...)

Agreed. Sometimes the hardest thing for a series is knowing when to stop.

None of of those Ponyville unicorns, who I assume had interest in trying to play this game, can catch a ball with a floating basket except for the easy-going Canadian-accented pony? :smallconfused: They didn't even try very well (ducking in fear, not paying attention, making themself sick by spinning the basket). Pfft, that was just sad.

The concept of the game itself was awesome. I like that all three pony types have a role and rely on each other to make the team work. Felt like a real game for ponies. Would be a bit better if they had more players per team (maybe 6 instead of 3?) but then I'm used to sports with large teams.

Glad AJ and Dash figured out stressing out their friends was making them play terrible. It is true that some people can't handle the stress to do well at something. Snails was awesome though, really happy he got a big part. Still don't buy that Fluttershy is a talented goalie. Pinkie was a bit more reasonable. The way she bounces around can be unpredictable and distracting.

Overall... I dunno. I like the concept of the game, but didn't feel that all the characters fit. On the other hoof, the facial expressions were divine (Flutter and Pinkie breaking down on the train and yelling at their friends was pretty funny). Eh, I'll give it an average grade.

The message was great too: Winning isn't worth it if it makes you miserable. Hopefully some parents who push their kids to do stuff they don't want will get the hint.

The Dash/Fluttershy training dynamic felt weird, considering that Dash only just now got into the sport, and then back in Hurricane Fluttershy Dash was very understanding despite the stakes on that event. Sports apparently bring out the worst in Dash. O.o

Yeah, I agree. They went the Quitddich route, except this one actually makes sense as a game in-universe.

Overall, I liked the episode. I like that Dash and Applejack realized early on that they weren't the best sportsponies in the arena, even if it did take them the minimum contractually obligated amount of time to realize they were using the wrong motivations with Fluttershy and Pinkie. The ending was great, and I liked Braeburn's team's character designs, and reactions/expressions.

S1 E22 Odd Bubbles Out

Wow look, there's continuity of the best sort! They take one of the better previous episodes, and continue its story returning the one-off character we've met there. They should do this more often. We get scenes with Bubbles and Danny enjoying themselves by just being friends, without doing anything special, which is exactly what I want to see from an episode. We also get my favorite villain of the series, and he's up to his usual evil. That's good, because he's appeared too few times.

The chewing gum joke was hilarious. I don't understand how that drawing instrument works: it looks like a crayon from the outside, but it turns out it's actually a felt tip pen or something with ink in it when Bubbles breaks it. Also, it turns out that Danny is actually called Donny. My mistake, I think I called him Danny last time too.

Great episode all taken together, among the better ones this season.

… Oh, you mean the MLP episode, S6 E18? Dunno, I found this one uninspired too. Nothing special in it. This season is just not doing well. It's not up to the standard of the first five seasons really. Wasn't anything really wrong with it, it's just not an episode I'll really remember. Somehow not even Pinkie Pie made this remarkable.

To improve the evening, I think I still have time to rewatch some other recent good episode. E17 "Once Upon a Townsville" will do. These writers really know how to create a very memorable one-off character, one that doesn't leave anything to my imagination to make her interesting. (Mind you, the MLP writers do as well: we won't forget Countess Coloratura even if she never appears in another episode again. That pony knows how to make an entrance.)

Fracking hell.

Probably the worst CK2 session yet.

Black Death arrived, as far away from me as possible, right on the left hand corjer of the map. And it made a beeline right to my Empire, mostly concentrating on my empire and not much on anyone else, aside from the Abbasids. Notably, given how AMAZINGLY fast it propogated to my lands, the rate slowed up something phenominal when it came to affecting anyone slightly north.

I spent the last four hours or so, fighting the game game for evry. Single, Step. Of the way. Because it did not give me ANYTHING. Not only does the Black Detah bring the whole game a SCREECHING halt (not does the supply limit drop to almost nothing, but it drops all economic out pout by 75%. BEFORE it adds depopulation modifers. So you literally cannot afford to declare war, because you can't afford to replace any casulaties. And you have scatter your retinues to the four winds, pretty much, or they will take attrition damage from just being in your home country becase again, you get a double-slap for both the Black Death inflicting an automatic penalty AND for the depopulation modifers.)

Again, the game decided - like it did with Lich - to pretty much refuse to let the hair remain unmolested; both him AND his bethrothed randomly became depressed (as my WARDS). I managed to get the off the bethrothed with carousing - but then, of course, the bloody plague had arrivedm and you can't do that while secluding away to make sure EVERYONE doesn't get plague and die.

From there is was one step forward, one step back, because if you didn't check EVERYTHING, EVERY time you did something, the game would sneak some more crap. The heir becomes a lunatic. One of the kings dies but you can't assign all the duchies to him yet. Aquitaine randomly, without any display of notice, without any wars or evern any obvious inheritance, starts acquiring duchies. If you moved the title to a different strageos, it would inexplicably acquire THOSE instead. In the end, I just gave the bloody things to Burgundy (because Aquintaine had been as war for fracking ever, so I couldn't take the kigndom). The king of a country would die, while at war and the can't assign duchies yet problem would happen. Area where retinue was standing suddenly got even less supply eading to attrition. Revolt.

Fix any of those problems, and one more would have occurred in the brief time in which you weren't baby-sitting every single aspect.

I managed just about to get to January of five years.

EXTREMLY frustrating. In all that time, the game did not give me ONE single solitary positive event, it was justy a litany of "screw you Bleakbane" event the entire time.



This better damn well be a good episode of pony or I'm going to be really narked. (And from the spoiler box titles, in involves sport of some form, which REALLY does not encourage me.)

Okay, that wasn't as bad as I was expecting. The amusing novelty of Pinkie and Fluttershy kicking AJ and Rd at a physical endevour went some way to carry the premise.

Was slightly above the average of this season, but not especially good.

High point was Snails. (Never thought I'd say that...)

Towards the middle there, I was thinking it was going down a very predicatably route... But it just barely avoided the worst cliches by having them breakdown on the train and RD and AJ FINALLY realise what fracking idiots they were being.



Why ANYONE ever bothers with trying to wrack up the tension for sports in shows, I don't know, since they ALWAYS use the "win by one point/goals/whatever at the last minute" thing. Now, I don't watch sports myself, but I'm pretty sure that's not a thing that happens with regularity. Would it kill anone to actually write a win with a different margin. Y'know, just for some fracking variety? And lack of UTTEr predictability? Especially since in this sort of case, the actual match wa more or less not even any kind of importance?

Overall... I dunno. I like the concept of the game, but didn't feel that all the characters fit. On the other hoof, the facial expressions were divine (Flutter and Pinkie breaking down on the train and yelling at their friends was pretty funny). Eh, I'll give it an average grade.

I still stick with my previous statement; Snails seems to be able to tap Ranma's skill set due to the shared voice actor.
While I'm still not sold on "Pinkie and Fluttershy are great athletes", Rainbow and Applejack are showing their character development; If this was, say Season 2 or so, they would have problems letting someone else take their spot.

Assuming the game is at least capable of being played single-race and keep it at earth ponies for now: the 'bucketeer' runs around the outside of the ring with the bucket trying to catch balls from the 'bucker'. Unicorns would work best here as they obviously don't have to worry about bodily momentum and can get the bucket up higher than a pony can jump for when the bucker just hoofs it (sorry). Which brings us nicely to needing a pegasus for defence.

I assume the raised baskets are there for either training or a much simpler two-a-side version.

What a fun episode. I really liked that one. Production values and animation continues to be excellent. Those faces, damn.
Some thoughts:

+ Going from "What's buckball?" to "I'm the expert" in 10 seconds flat. Heh, typical RD.
+ Game looks interesting. At first I thought unicorns were just in it for inclusivity's sake. But then I got it: Earth ponies have to buck strongly and around agile pegasi. The unicorns need to be able to anticipate the bucks and feints.
+ But where to find a unicorn? Rarity won't play something uncouth and Twilight is a nerd.
+ 'The Princess may play as long as she uses only waterbending'. Oops, wrong sport.
+ I can understand Pinkie being a natural. Fast reflexes + Pinkie Sense + great balance. Fluttershy, on the other hoof.. Maybe her protective instinct? Or pure luck?
+ Anyway, I really love those sport episodes. Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash work great together.
+ No, silly ponies. don't pressure them.
+ Hey, it's Lyra! with facepaint, too. Keeps in character for her to be very enthusiastic about sports and competitions. At least that's how I think of her.
(I remember her being excited at every competition on the show. And wasn't she a swimming judge at some point in an AJ episode?)
+ At least they got it before the game. And AJ's plan was clever. (Did she just let Pinkie hit the ball that time?)
+ Ruffled looking ponies are best ponies.

Overall, great episode: A chuckle every line, there's always something fun happening on screen, and all ponies were very well characterised. Also, great animations - Every single scene with Fluttershy was pure joy.
Special mention to: Snails. For being necessary, fun, and having the best visual gag of meditating with those baskets.

Well it was an obscure game. No one in Ponyville knew what it was until AJ and Dash explained it to everyone. but it is odd to say Brae got a Pegasus and Unicorn and suddenly that's how it's played. Ah well, just another oddity with the story.

My only complaint with this episode is that they could have spared a minute or so explaining why Starlight and Rarity weren't in the trials (Twilight's right out for obvious reasons). Other than that, it was perfectly serviceable, and respected the characters' development over time. This may be Skelly's first FiM credit, but she knows her business which is more than I can say for most of this season's stable of writers.

This is what I think has been plaguing this season (and even parts of last season) of the show. I managed to squeeze in a quick blitz up through Europe, before I had to stop and rest.

I managed to get Lich killed off (with a bit of reloading) by pnumonia and medial malpractice, so at least one good thing came out of the new DLC... Going to try to avoid female rulers in future, it makes the job of setting up the next heir very difficult. (With a male, you can keep having children quite late; ideally you want to have a big long reign and then pop out a sprog in your sixties of seventies, raise 'em to adulthood and then popo you clogs. With females, fertility means you have much less time to work with).

It was! While everyone got a little baseball pin to wear for participating (and a slice of pizza), only the top three teams got full on medals for their victory. Scores were kept and posted, and everyone was told about good sportsmanship when losing. Honestly, I didn't care that my team was second to last, I got pizza. :smalltongue:

Welp, it's Tuesday! And somehow, despite having internet for most of that time, I just never got around to watching New Pony until a few hours ago.

I will say that while the plot is so so, the lesson is pretty good. And the faces... Oh, sweet everything that is good, the faces and the animation are fantastic.

It's not supposed to have one, as Cadentia is based on a number of churches, not mosques. You're not entirely wrong, however, as there exists a large number of mosques in the "architectural family lineage" of that design. There are many descendants of the original multi-domed masterpiece of the Hagia Sophia, spread across multiple religions. Sancta Cadentia is a representative of the 19~20th century Byzantine Revival style of Russian Orthodox Christianity (note the very elevated domes). Sancta Caelestia is based on the original Holy Wisdom as it would have appeared in the 7th century after the reconstruction of its dome, and Sancta Luna is based on the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (the Blue Mosque of Istanbul). Thus, only Sancta Luna has minarets.

Note that the last interior screenshot displays a fully developed, modern Iconostasis, an iconic feature of Orthodox churches. Caelestia has a mere screen in that place, while Luna has none, as it is a mosque. Luna has a Mihrab and a Minbar instead.

But I just spent most of the evening revamping my Pokémon spread sheet.

(I will admit - I have basically given up trying to record every single Pokémon I have, like I did the first time. It's been two full generations later, and to refill it properly, I'd have to go through EVERY GAME again ('cos so much stuff has moved around) and I just can't be arsed. (I mean most lesser mortals would gawp at the idea in the first place...)

Principally, even, the list exists primarily to ensure that I don't reuse nicknames (so I will, at the very least, have to copy all the nicknamed Pokémon not in primary teams)... Though for the moment "all" I did was move in the data for all my primary teams, fill a new column with Living Dex entries (sans anything that I havent got yet) and then updated that column with the correct data for the first 150... And that all took... quite a while even when updating the data consists of the quck process "check nickname, check gender (use drop down to change if not male), use dropdown for nature, note IVs if marked)).

And then updating my gender data, because. I can tell you, therefore, that the current mix of Carnage Team (i.e the primaries) is 48 female to 62 males to 1 gender-neutral.

East Asia as a whole does not value forgiveness much anyway, so I think that was to be expected. Legalist (fa jia) thinking is strong in mainstream culture. Be methodical in rewarding, but utterly punish all punishable things.

But not generally in Pokémon, which generally has been on the "dudes are misguided" things for the villains - both in the games and anime.

To see the anime take a stance harsher than the games - and its previous methods - was surprising. To the point it wasn't until two episodes after Hunter J's last appearance (and checking the wiki) it twigged that yes, she was actually dead dead. (Which I think marks a first time we have seen any humans actually die in Pokémon - in any medium.)

I mean for heaven's sake, if you can't write your protagonists you should not be writing. And if you simply don't want to, then why'd you apply for the job? I can see staying on at a job you hate. Everybody does that. But most of the writers this season were new.

The Mane6 have beaten a lot of big name villains, so we know what they're capable of doing, but a new team could give an interestingly different dynamic. Starlight leads them, and we know she has some leadership skills (Sorta). This could be her "trial by fire" episode.

Understandably, this could fail just as well as it could succeed. Who Starlight chooses to take along is important; pandering characters for the sole sake of pandering to us won't do well in a serious finale, but if the team consists of characters that make good sense to bring along, maybe there's chemistry to be found in the interactions and it works out. At minimum, the writers are at least taking a chance by trying something different. Most of season 6's episodes that I feel had failed were because they stick to status quo often, repeating old lessons already used. It needs to try something bold to end on a high note.

I'd argue that the Mane6 weren't really much sidelined in The Cutie Map. They still contributed a good bit and Twi made the winning play at the end with her magic blocking Glimmer's spell. But tossing that aside, I found those episodes that you mentioned to be at least decent if not good and fun.

Dungeons & Discord wasn't really bad overall. Big Mac is usually fun to have in an episode and Spike was doing a good performance there. Discord is... well Discord. It was a pretty good second-tier slice of life.

The Cutie Map had some cute new characters that I thought got a good moment to shine. Sugar Belle was a sweetie, and I'd be interested to see Party Favor use balloons to make other kind of contraptions.

Slice of Life is just a really fun love letter to the show's fans. It was humorous nonsense that I found entertaining.

So overall, I'm for the finale trying a big adventure with non-Mane6 characters. We have seen backgrounders get their spotlight, but not in a really big way like a season ender adventure to save Equestria. There's still some newness in that.

As for The Cutie Re-Mark, that didn't showcase Glimmer's leadership skills though, which is the trial I referred to. Leading a group of ponies to defeat the ancient evil whatever-it-is.

Except the pony in question is Starlight Glimmer, who is simply awful. Though I haven't been watching this season anyways, so what do I care? (The answer is that I might want to watch it eventually)

I know that it'll never happen, but it'd be awesome )While there's a lot of overlap between the tow fandoms, they aren't nearly 1:1, so there'd be fans on both sides that object tto the mix.)

Except the pony in question is Starlight Glimmer, who is simply awful. Though I haven't been watching this season anyways, so what do I care? (The answer is that I might want to watch it eventually)

Well, yeah, if you don't like Glimmer than I doubt the finale is going to resonate well with you. Depending on who the backgrounders are that tag along, it might even get worse.

The Great and Powerful Trixie: Accusations of pandering aside, I think Trixie would be an excellent fit for the episode. She's already established as having a connection to Starlight, it would be a good chance to add more depth to her character, and her personality lends itself well to creating excellent inter-group conflict which makes for good drama.

Spike: Spike has had more screen time with Starlight than most other ponies aside from Twilight and Trixie, and they have already shown fairly good chemistry. Spike also brings the ability to give Starlight a pep talk pointing out how Twilight isn't perfect either but never gave up which would make for a good overcoming adversity moment in Act 3.

Thorax: I could see Thorax being brought along on the advice of Spike. His presence would simultaneously create tension (what with him being a changeling and not everypony necessarily being entirely forgiving) and would present a chance to further flesh out changelings in general.

Big Mac: Another Spike invitee. Mostly I see him as possibly providing a foil for the other personalities.

Sunburst: While it would make sense for Starlight to bring Sunburst along, he doesn't really bring much personality-wise beyond possibly being a foil for Trixie. Another issue is that bringing Sunburst would necessitate explaining the absence of Shining Armor and Cadence.

Discord: Honestly, I don't really see having Discord involved as a realistic possibility, but I'd really love to see Discord and Starlight interact since they're two reformed villains with very different attitudes towards their past misdeeds.

I wouldn't really see it as tearing Twilight down so much as pointing out what her true strengths are. The idea is that Twilight is not infallible, we've seen that on multiple occasions, but she when she encounters a difficult scenario she doesn't stop until she overcomes it for the sake of her friends.

I would see Thorax as more of a possibility than Sunburst since Thorax has fewer responsibilities keeping him in the Empire, and thus could show up in Ponyville visiting Spike.
As for Discord, I fully acknowledge that his power would be a major strike against including him from a narrative standpoint. Honestly I only included him in my speculation because I really would love to see him interact with Starlight Glimmer.

I have to say, I wholeheartedly agree that this has been the best episode of the season thus far. You can't. The kid knew perfectly well she was an archaeologist. The parents were just stupid and didn't bother to ask her. That's exactly the story I imagined about Billy Blaze (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showsinglepost.php?p=19162926&postcount=1069). Except, Billy concealed his adventures from her parents for at least months, whereas for all I know, Petunia just got her cutie mark yesterday, and during the celebration, she didn't yet notice that her parents are so dumb as to not realize what his very obvious cutie mark means. I mean, even I know what it meant immediately, and I've only just met her.

I liked it, Gabby was a fun, if way hyper character, but I love that they resolved the problem without giving her an actual cutie mark. I was wondering which way they'd go with that, but I think this was better. Of course, I do wonder what a cutie mark representing helping others would even look like.

This was just a solid feelgood episode, and pony is at its biggest strength when it pulls off one of those. Probably one of my favorites this season, though Gauntlet of Fire and No Second Prances are up there too. Not bad company to be in, mind you.

As an aside, I want to put Pinkie Pie and Gabby in a room together and tell Pinkie to ask Gabby about those fancy shields on her bags... and then just watch them go. Sugar will be available in excessive amounts to keep it going.

Uurgh. Managed to get through the five years peace in CK2 to get the ambition. but the RNG fought me all the way. But it appears that there's bug that makes the mean time to happen events fire way too often (didn't really notice it before), especilly when you resign and reload (because CK2 doen't have a simple "load" function for reasons which escape me)... Which of course then creates something of a vicious cycle.

The only plus side is the ridiculous amount of tech points I'm getting; but I'll take it, since it's fighting me so much...

Gabby... Is actually the first gryphon in the series I've liked the design of, which was a good start.

I was impressed throughout how mature the CMC have become. They did pretty much everything right and did their best; even when they FINALLY managed to get it into Gabby that they couldn't physically give her another species' magical biology. And Gabby earned herself a lot of points by more or less her first though being to try and make THEM feel better. And crowning it by making her a cutiemark and finding her destiny anyway. Yeah. Good job girls, good job.

Though I think trying to calm Twilight down is probably going to be something of a challenge.

I was VERY dubious myself, but I actually did manage to watch it on dailymotion (it still isn't on youtube at the time I watched, and it normally is by this point), though it was definitely a bit laggy (though the audio at least remained reasonbaly in synch).

Definitely an inferior experience though.



Speaking generally of internet adverts I CANNOT understand how the internet advertisers can possibly even THINK to make adverts that screw up a site's performance; and we're not talking just dodgy adverts, but big companies that really ought to know better. In some cases, it makes the site unusable. (Case in point - Photobucket. I ended up getting paid ad-free for both my accounts and chalking it down as a business expense.) I cannot fathom how it appears not to occur to the advertisers that if their advert locks the website site up, I cannot see their advert. The thing they are paying the website to display. It is so utterly self-defeating.



I garentee, when I take charge, among the things done will be to say "right, okay, among all the other things you are now going to have to do (or die), any company that has got internet adverts is mandatorially required to revise, starting immediatly, those adverts to that they are non-performance-intrusive. And you will fix it chaps, since until you do, you have blanket ban on ANY type of advertising AT ALL. Get it done fast enough and I MIGHT even not start disembowling employees starting from the CEO(s) down..."

So, I decided that it might be as well to let CK2 rest for a bit - maybe until the next patch comes out, since post Reaper's it is still a bit... Difficult (especially with a couple of moderate bugs outstanding.)

I thought I would try AoE2 again, since there was/is a recent patch, and a possible solution to the AI passivity issue, Which I can't do anythign with unti it can be fixed one way or another, since the next mission is a "kill 500 enemy units" one.

Nope. Not only is there no indication of the number of units killed (and I have a feeling there should be), apparently, it still screws up if you save/load. And, as with Homeworld 2, I am just not up for playing the mission in its entirity through time after time until you get the one with no mistakes.

So, forget that nonsense then.

Problem is, I'm at a loose end. Half of the games I would play are now waiting for various fixes and patches still now, and none of the others are springing to my immediate appeal. (Even the ones I have aside for "I really don't know what to do" days.)

I dunno, you know sometimes where you're too weary to make a decision? Well I seem to be there, without an obvious adeuqate reason.

(And spending the entire off-day doing nothing but watching Pokémon - which I've done most of this week) seems like a waste (even though it arguably isn't any more than anything else.)

You need a plugin, because youtube and other streaming sites don't really want you to download videos (cuts down on their business, I imagine). I use one called Video DownloadHelper for Firefox, it's been working well so far.

Deviantart asked, 'hey dude, take down your adblocker please' via a big orange message that showed up on every picture. Fair enough, I said. Then I got hit with hideous flash ads with audio that loaded on every tab I opened and basically crashed my system. Up went the adblocker.

So, yesterday, I gave up and finally settled on playing Banished, with a mod which added a boat-load of more stuff to build.

And despite my best efforts to phase in population growth, I forgot that the people age faster than the number of years... and at 15 years in, hit the nasty bit of Banished in the massive populatino die-off. My city dropped to about 50% population in less than three years, forcing me to shut down all the industries (and cost me the one chicken I'd manged to trade for when the workers for the pasture died). A frantic build of a town hall would hopefully let some nomads arrive... But my working population dipped down to 20 (out of over 50) before I finally got a burst of immgrants, when I slipped an hour in today.

I look at the images, and to me it feels "smaller" compared to your other basilica projects in the same way that the RMS Queen Mary 2 is smaller than the MS Harmony of the Seas. :smallbiggrin:

I have. He brought up a really good point: What Well To Do was doing was an act of war. Unless his mob goon had a weapon to his son's head (And there was no evidence of that in the comic), King Aspen should have gored the f***er right then and there.

I thought it was hilarious that his new roommate Viga (who is his fiance IRL) denying the existence of clop, only to back up and saying that it's "only on the internet".

All in all a good review, though as a very minor complaint, I was annoyed that his ponification on the title card had no cutie mark.

Not really much of a scandal. We've never been given any context on who the other rainbow-mane pony is. Could of been Dash's neighbor across the cloud street for all the info we've been given. I think the fandom got too attached to their theory and forgot it was just a theory. Personally I'd of liked for that other pony to have been her dad, because it seems like a neat character-defining moment that Dash had a good relationship with her father (and that's probably biased of me to say, but I don't care). :smallbiggrin:

Overall I found the story to be really weak. King Aspen's takeover of Ponyville is just as bad as the theme park construction taking the forest. Neither of them deserve the high ground here. They're both caricature extremes of "don't touch the forest" and "progress!", while the middle ground of "sustained forestry initiatives" gets left out in the cold (http://orig00.deviantart.net/fefe/f/2012/058/1/7/left_out_in_the_cold_by_mr_1-d4r8hl1.png). Didn't Ponyville spring up at the edge of the forest, using the lumber there for the construction? The forest doesn't seem to be hurting because of it.

I miss Everfree being the dark, scary taboo Season One gave us. Where only one zebra dared live in there because she too was as creepy as the forest. Even the show made it a bit less scary in the later seasons... Also, what ever happened to the repair work being done at the old castle of the sisters? Feels like that project got dropped.

New Episode~
It was an okay episode. Interesting that AJ's and Flutter's individual take on what they were sent for ended up working together, so that was kind of interesting. The highlight for me was all the background pony designs. So many huggable new ponies! I love that one orange pony AJ talked too, he looked like Scooter from The Muppets. Bet that's an allusion.

Again, we trust the magic table with blind faith and things just happen to turn out. Rather than be supplied with a sensible amount of information.

Everything else was... okay, I guess? Run-of-the-mill by pony standards (which is at least a little above the moribund end of this season)... But then again, I've never been a fan of this sort of story, whether they do in Pony or in Xena, so it's largely sort of lost on me.

Never been struck on Flim and Flam particularly, either, for that matter, so this sort of just hit a "s'right, I guess," curve.

Nothing really stood out to me, is what I'm saying.

Had to watch it on Dailymotion again; tried using some of the stuff you folks mentioned last time,but with adblock plus on, it didn't even load the videos. Gonna leave noscript up for the immediate moment, though, and see if make any difference to the browser performance. A lot of places are starting to get untenably difficult to go to; and not palces that you might think might be a bit dodgy (like where I've been watching Pokémon, which is very well behaved), but places like Bulbapedia or the Civ V wiki1.



Edit: Huh, concensus of "s'right or slightly better" from ponythread, which is kinda unusual. But not of us really has much to say about it, apparently, interestingly...

I liked this one. A new location, lots of new background ponies, the main cast member seemed in character. Same writers as The Times They Are a Changeling, and I think did better this time.

Seeing Flim and Flam come back, not as antagonists, but not redeemed was fun. Hopefully they'll be less dangerous at running a casino resort than their previous ventures.

The only time I might make an exception would be Ash's Chikorita and only THEN because it'd be abso-fragging-lotely hilarious to see him utterly and totally lost as to what was going on.



Assuming, of course, that Bleakbane's Ash Theory No. 27 is not true...

This builds on Ash Theory no. 1, which says that Ash has aged (nevermind what the dub says, it is canonically impossible for him to be ten, given the number of episodes and interestingly, the Japanese dub places him at 15 at the start of XY), he's just really short.

The latest theory goes all the way back to School of Hard Knocks, the only time time we've seen Ash actually show interest in a girl. However, this was early days, before Brock started... Being so much Brock. Current postulation is that, given every single time a pretty girl/woman showed up, Brock jumped at her, and embarrassed them all, Ash started to feel that showing interest after that would be really uncomfortable or bothersome so he quietly quashed any such impulses and feined ignorance (which, to be fair a fair proportion of the time was probably genuine, at least until later reflection). Especially with regard to this feelings for Misty, because he was, like, still 11-12. And, after she left, and he travelled so much with Brock - over his formative early teenage years... It became habit, and he got so used to just feining (or actually being until after the fact - which made it easier to pretend of course), that it's basically been ingrained into him at this point. And will take a huge amount of effort by any interested party, not just to be explictly clear of that interest, but that it's even just actually OKAY for him to be interested. (Something that would take a great deal of knowledge of Ash - or a long talk with someone who does (and not Brock), which seems unlikely...) And, in that sense, it's sort of a spot of mild tragedy, to go with his other absolutely ridiculously heroic life.

(Seriously, the dude has saved the world more times than many mid-level superheroes...)

Given that there was fanfic of it YEARS ago (and let's not forget, it was actually the Pokémon fandom that coined the phrase "shipping" in the first place and the names they had for every permutation...), it would be more surprising if it didn't.



Fracking heck Civ 5 - as per usual - waited until I was just trying to get to a natural break and then through a wobbly "no, someone will build that wonder just before you; no, for some reason, you don't get a save that's not 50 turns back and the next one is two turns too late." I tried everything and got it down to the same turn... And then the game decided it could finish the wonder three turns earlier.

So, at this point, I said "y'know what? NO. I'm fed up of going back and going back and going back to fix things so, you what? [Expleteive] you, game, I'll just use the editor and hurry the production the turn before you and you can FRACK OFF."

This is, notably, after spending a lot of time in the early game (unsucessfully) breeding Skrelp, because Civ 5 has the loading time of a glacier, and despite it's age, is still highly unstable and prone to graphic-glitching so you have to task manager and force-close it.

Not endearing me to the idea of Civ 6, given the level of Beyond Earth and Civ 5, frankly. Firaxis just ain't what they were up until Civ IV anymore.

It annoys me that they made it increasing tedious to rush production throughout the series, and the later the games get, the more it felt like they only wanted you to play the way they wanted you to play. Civ 6, then, is not really encouraging me. (Frankly, the one unit per hex is far stupider idea than the doom stacks. As I keep saying, if you actually want to get rid of doomstacks, then implement a proper logistics and supply system and stop trying to half-arse it; even EUIV and CK2 only barely manage a marginal job of doing that.)

So I'm back in class and learning how to code. I've found it very frustrating and have been constantly been unable to really think this year. So lab quiz (we have one every week) comes up, and I decide I'm going to put off some Offspring (You're going to go far kid), on Youtube to listen to (I had to get around the firewall by loading it up before the quiz began). And holy crap, I was completely unable to panic, and stayed focus'd the entire time.

That felt really good. I didn't do a perfect job on the quiz, choosing to shoot myself in the foot by getting fancy, but I managed to actually get my compiler working (which wasn't the case for the last lab quiz), was racing through my code, and just in general it felt so good, and was a huge boost to my self-confidence which had been brutalized by nothing working ever.

So yeah. Music apparently has a massive impact on my performance and confidence. It makes sense I guess. All video game bosses have their theme songs, and staying calm and focused is almost necessary to beat them. :smallwink:

Last night I played in a Fallout EquestriaXParanoia conglomeration game and in the end it turns out we didn't die. It was worse, the GM managed to troll the entire party in a Magnificent Bastard move we had to applaud him for.

We were hired by the Applejack Rangers to transport a server that housed an AI to a Stable. But the GM gave each of us a Dark Secret, in the spirit of Paranoia, which contained our real objective. My former enclave pegasus medic was actually a synth body piloted by a breezie from the Breezie Institute of Science. My objective was to steal the AI for breezie science.

And so was everyone else! :smallbiggrin:

Somehow we ended up not killing each other, but due to setting too many transponders on the AI server, we teleported the AI somewhere two days away. We think. Maybe?

People didn't have supply trains like WW2 armies - they were roaming orc hordes, plundering the landscape and extorting the population. When they'd sucked a province dry then they moved along - and that's exactly what the provincial wealth and attrition mechanics of EU4 encourage you to do (The system breaks down when it comes to dropping 40,000 troops in South Africa but the thought is there).

Wallenstein, THE HANGING DUKE, was the greatest military genius of his age (also a possibly autistic evil wizard) not because he was great at fighting battles but because he was so good at extracting value from the countryside, managing an almost comical amount of debt and keeping an absurdly large army together. By comparison, Galleas, THE DESTROYER OF ARMIES, earned his title for discovering that there was, in fact, no food in Pommerenia (and like any good scientist he needed to confirm his experiment by repeating it several times).

(Everyone in this period had awesome nicknames. Also present were THE WINTER KING, THE LION OF THE NORTH, THE MAD HABADISTER and THE ARMOURED MONK. Try and guess which ones were insults.)

I remember fondly the days I spent trying to maneuver my troops almost one fourt the size of the enemy's all around the Caucausus trying to trick the enemy into starving itself to death. Fun times.
