View Full Version : How do aquired templates or savage progression and level adjustment buyoff interact?

I am trying to build a savage progression ghost character.
So far, I think, this is how it works:

ECL: 1; XP +0000: Class1; Total XP earned: 0000; actual XP: 0000; LA+0
ECL: 2; xp +1000: Class2; Total XP earned: 1000; actual XP 1000; LA+0
ECL: 3; xp +2000: Ghost1; Total XP earned: 3000; actual XP 3000; LA+1
ECL: 4; xp +3000: Class3; Total XP earned; 6000; actual XP 6000 LA+1
-->LA Buyoff xp -3000;
ECL: 3; Total XP earned 6000; actual XP 3000 LA+0

If I take another level of ghost now (LA+1), when can I buy it off? Would I need 6 class levels or can I buy it off immediately since I have 3 class levels and only 1 LA?

And then there is this problem:
The rules about Reducing Level Adjustments only talk about starting Level Adjustments. Can it be that savage progression and templates acquired during gameplay can not be bought off?

This seems like the correct reading, yes.

Hmm even so the internet is full of LA guides and discussions, but no one mentions this problem.

Personally, and I know this isn't RAW, I don't let my players buy off savage progression LA as they come up.

For example, I would not let a player take three class levels, then the first LA of ghost, then buy it off and repeat. Instead, they'd have to consider how much LA they plan to take (say +3 LA), so they can't buy off the first point until 9 class levels, even if they only have +1 LA at the time.
