Being enjoying your work for a long times since the begining, so I hope you get as better as you can, and please take my words for sure that everyone thinks the same if you need more than two weeks everyone will be fine with it, take a month, two month, an year if you need, your health should come first, never your work, no matter how many people love to see another comic, get well first.

Mis mejores deseos,
Sebastián

Reading between the lines, it is not something that one recovers from. It is likely some form of malady that makes the fine hand movement controls needed to create the comic's art difficult or painful. Muscle control, bone issues, nerve problems - take your pick.

In other words, it is a condition to be managed; barring major medical advances, something that will last for lifetime. It is not an issue of taking a few months off and being all clear.

At least, that is my take on it. I don't know any more than other people; I am reading same announcement that all of you are reading.

fwiffo, maybe I'm biased from my own experience, but I didn't see it quite that way. Between the wording of the announcement and the "comic will be late" panel he posted, I read it more like he was describing a broader, more generally affecting problem, similar to my chronic nausea problems.

Best not to discuss it, though. (Actually, I'm only bringing this up to try and prevent any rumors from getting a foothold. I'd hate to see the damage from a popular but false idea of whatever he has.)

That said, I'm signing.

Aye, do what you have to do to get better. We can wait, of course. =) And on a side note, I am glad to hear that Rich is making enough off of the comic that he doesn't need to work a day job. I had been wondering about that... it seems the comic entertains a great many people, and I was hoping that as such he'd be making a decent living off of it. At least that's a positive thing. Hopefully this condition (whatever it is) isn't permanent so he can enjoy his life as well.

All true fans of this comic know Rich's health is far more important than having the comic up on time. Anybody who whinges and complains and feels that he "owes them something", despite the fact we are provided with hours of entertainment for free (Although many of us, myself included, are happy to buy books, t-shirts and other OotS stuff, nobody is obliged to), are to be ignored. We would all rather see excellent quality stuff at random, rather than Rich forcing himself to produce something so that the vocal minority of complainers are kept quiet.

All the best Rich,

Rich:

I've been reading OOTS since around #60 or so, and your work continues to improve in quality. You've yet to jump the shark in my humble opinion, and I think you're still far, far away from the fin. I've had the honor of standing in line to purchase OOTS goodies at Indy GenCon 2005 and 2006, meeting you briefly both times. Thanks for all you've given us.

I have no idea if you'll personally read this; I assume you're fairly busy even on a good day to read all the forum posts. While I'm selfishly sorry that you have to cut back on your production and convention attendance, I know that you wouldn't do it unless you had to, and health and sanity are much more important than appeasing the fanboys. Take care of yourself, and I hope you can make it back to Indy in 2008 and for many more years after that.

Giant,

It is horrible having to carry a disease for a long time, but I am glad to hear it is non-fatal. You know, nowadays they find a cure for everything, so I hope very soon the only reason why you would need to take a break is because you deserve one.

My regular job has me sorrounded with shallow people only interested in making money and spending it, so it is great to know this little spot in Internet for my geeky side to laugh and participate, not worring how "hot" the M&A market is or whether our companies are reaching their targets.

Keep doing your stuff at your pace, and enjoy life!!!

Best Regards,

Dear Giant: As one of a great many admirers of your work, It saddens me to hear that you suffer from a chronic disease. Your ability to create high, even literary drama in a comic whose style would seem to allow only light comedy challenges older notions of the medium in which you work. I will go so far as to say that you are no longer just making D&D jokes, though you do that brilliantly, nor are you merely telling a story. You are creating art.

I count myself lucky to have met you briefly at a booksigning at Pandemonium Games in Cambridge, and was impressed by your great energy. I commend you for maintaining the drive even under adversity.

Here's to hoping for your best possible health, may the best days of your past be as the worst days of your future.

May your ongoing battle with your illness be not a victory, but a triumph, Mr Burlew. There are not many people willing to give others what you've given us, through OotS, even among those of us who take breaks from our work simply on a whim. Get better indeed, Rich Burlew: and stay better, too! :smallwink:

With My Gratitude,
TheSilverSage

...I forgot my cursive somewhere around 8th grade and have since used a series of scribbles as my signature. People tell me I'm going to be a doctor *rim shot*

OOTS shouldn't be a responsibility or an obligation. It's something the Giant needs to do because he enjoys it and enjoys sharing the world with us.

I hope his holiday and the lack of a schedule, relieve the stress of the task and allow him to enjoy it once again.

Do it 'cos you Love it, and have fun while you're at it!

Heck, host a few other 3rd party comics like Erfworld and we'll always have a reason to keep visiting.

As far as I am concerned, you can take the time you want to work on OOTS. If you go too fast, it won't be as good, anyway, so as a fan I can only want you to do it at your rythm.
So, take as much time as you want or need between strips, and after you complete the strips that will be book 3. We'll be there waiting for sure.

I don't think anyone has been doing that, have they? I haven't seen anyone.

Unfortunately, they have. Such as here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50479). Good to see that most people don't share this guy's opinion.

Signs with lots of friendly hugs.

I'm glad you're looking after yourself, Rich - I have experience of chronic illness from both sides of the fence (suffer from one myself, now studying to be a doctor) and rest is absolutely the most important thing. Get lots of it.

If you were in the UK I'd send you some of my magic instant-healing chocolate brownies. Damn Customs regulations.

Signed up to sign. Long time reader, first time poster.

Love OOTS. Always wonderful to have it to look forward to. Thank you for such awesomeness.

Sending all my appreciation and good energy your way Rich. Don't worry about us, just take care of yourself. We are happy with whatever and whenever you can manage. Randomness is more fun anyway!

I wish you the best of health.

You're health is far more important than any career you might have. Take your time, with the comic. Stressing out about the comic will only shorten your life, which cheats your family and loved ones out of precious time, and they are the ones that really matter.

Best wishes and kind regards.

Take it easy and take your time, Rich.

*ships huge crate of Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup (in cans) and boxes of Manischewitz Matzo Ball & Soup Mix to Mr. Burlew* - seriously, Manischewitz matzo balls (from the box) in Campbell's soup is the BOMB when you're sick and don't want to cook. I would ship baked goods as well, but I suck at cooking.

Dear Mr. Burlew,

As a long time reader and supporter of Order of the Stick (sadly since only about comic #150), I feel compelled to thank you for all the wonderful work you've done and commend your storytelling skill. I would also like to extend a hearty thank you to your significant other taking good care of you.

You have my well wishes and hopes that your recovery is swift and relatively painless, and feels nothing like the wrath of the Twelve Gods striking you down and leaving you a Fighter-Without-Bonus-Feats. Nor, I hope, shall it feel the same as an unidentifiable creature lightly touching a Paladin and sending it through a wall.

To wrap up this rather lengthy signature to a communal get-well wish, I merely wish to say the following two phrases of wisdom:
"You roll a natural 20 on your Fortitude save."
And...
"Hello, and welcome to ThorPrayer(C)..."

Signed,
The Relentless Imp

PS: Do take it easy and please don't push yourself overmuch. All the best wishes!

Giant, you have given, and continue to give, and I hope will for a long time continue to give... so many of us great joy with your creation. So many of us are understanding of your situation, and wish you great strength and patience as you deal with it. Thank you for keeping us informed that we might manage our expectations.

Adoring fan # 2 billion and 6.

I'll echo the sentiments of pretty much everyone else. While the comic is awesome it's no substitute for improved health on your part, and a freer schedule where you can relax a little more will hopefully ease whatever ails 'ya! I'm sure everyone who reads the comic is fine with going back to the randomly posted strips, I for one am more than happy to get my OOTS kicks whenever you feel right enough to make them!

Hope you feel better soon Giant

Rich --

I do hope that you feel better soon. Do what you need to do. We fans will still be there.

BTW, my whole family reads Order of the Stick. We have all your books and several t-shirts and revel in OotS coolness. You've made our days brighter with your fine storytelling.

Hugs to you and your family.

Hey, Rich. This is my first (and likely, only) post on these forums. There's a good chance you will eventually check this thread out however, and I just want to take a moment. Long-term illness is one of the most "isolating" things imaginable, it can be upsetting, scary, and depressing. My hopes and and prayers go out to you and your family during such difficult circumstances.

Thank you so much for many years of fun and entertainment. I'm looking forward to many more.

:)

Better yet, stay well. Good health is a must for enjoying the little things.

(My Collage History Professor said he found the name Inigo Montoya to be the best name. It just rolls off the tongue don't you think?)

Take care of yourself, Sir Giant.
