So I need some help figuring out where to find clockwork and automaton type creatures at. My party of 4 will be going into some ruins and I want to fill it with mecha. I was thinking of just slapping effigy on some normal beasts but... Would a group of 5th level people be able to handle that? Got a fighter a dragon priest a ranger and a warmage.
They are not optimized but they are very good at thinking outside the box to solve problems. Also the races if relevant are 2 humans a Goliath and a stone child (weakened from normal ones to make it fit the party.)

Mechanus I believe

In Mechanus you have Modrons. On prime material you can have fortresses guarded by effigies, golems, and warforged.

Effigies are your best bet. Gondsmen are depicted as classic automatons (think Return to Oz's Tick-Tock), but they are badly documented and... outdated.

MM2 has the Pulverizer and Hammerer automatons, which are about in the CR range you desire. Remember that they need to be upgraded to 3.5, which makes them gain extra HP and ups their CR to 4-5.

The same book also has Clockwork Horrors, the lower end of which is about the power curve you're looking for. Mechanical spiders with a hive intellegence. There was a Dragon Magazine article somewhere with a Copper Horror for an even lower CR Clockwork Horror that might fit your party as well. Checked, #350 is the issue with the Copper Horror.

You have 6 more Clockworks (Drone, Scout, Overseer, Warrior, Parasite and Swarm) in Tome of Horrors I.

Shameless plug: I did some homebrew automatons for my Skyrim game. Hope you find them useful.
