Chapter one: Stranger Things

The sunlight pushed its way slowly into your room, pushing aside the cold air that grew lazy from the nights darkness. It was a warm blanket, that threatened to heat up anything it touched, and it failed to stop, even when the curtains attempted to block its life giving light.

It eventually touched your face, waking you to the day in Cloud City. Either you were born here, lived here most of your life, or just arrived, it was another beautiful day in Cloud City, the jewel of the empire.

It felt good, and you let it linger on your face as you woke up, there was nothing of importance to be done, and a few minutes enjoying the warmth upon your skin was a good start.

But, as all things it had an ending. This one was a sound.

A large crash sounded outside your window, as if a thousand horses had suddenly stampeded through the cobble stone streets, you heard carts and wood break, snapping, and twisting, and then, an eery silence that was almost deafening, which was broken a heartbeat later by the most intense, loud explosion you have ever felt in your life. You felt it through the building, through the sheets, and into your bones. A layer of dust jumped up, everywhere you looked, as if the cities soul had been jerked out of its body.

Your ears are ringing, and you realize you cannot hear anything except a loud obnoxious ringing...that doesn't stop.

Sarah had been sleeping in, of course. With the dwarven dignitaries arriving later in the day, her mother Meridda knew it'd be a late night for the kids. And even at nineteen, Sarah knew she was still a "kid" to her parents, though they'd put it down to the longevity of dwarves.

The crash, though, woke her right up. She jumped out of bed, and ran to the window. Perhaps not the smartest of ideas, but she figured that whatever just happened, it must be pretty impressive! Besides, if a building had collapsed or something, maybe she could go help anyone who was hurt.

If her parents would let her. Sigh.

You see a billowing column of smoke coming from what used to be the Tower of the Archmage. A betting man would place money on that being the source of the explosion. Looking out, you see the street is littered with bodies. But you don't see any wounds, no one is moving....

I'm going to place you on the outskirts of town, right next to the Dwarven embassy...which is going to be fun.

Also, when you inevitably run downstairs, don't assume anyone is where they should be. :P

Rose rushes out of her room, almost leaving the door open, moving back to close it, she heads down the stairs to the common room.

No one was there.

Ignoring the strange sight, she heads out the front door into the sunlight of the morning.

The street is eerily quiet, people are lying on the street as far as you can see, no one is moving...

Garreth almost instantly regretted entering the city. He wasn't fond of anything civilized beyond a small village and the sound of an explosion echoing through the streets gave him pause.

He was certain he was here for a reason (whether this incident was a part of it or not) and he bEgan to walk quickly toward the plume of smoke in the distance, occasionally looking down a side street or alley, keeping wary of any other surprises that might occur.

As he approaches the site of the explosion the smell of smoke thickens and he frowns in disgust. He pauses when he reaches the first body, kneeling down to inspect it.

No wounds. Odd.

He didn't like the look, sound, or smell of this at all. Normally he'd find a spot to hide, his favored bow knocked. That didn't seem to be appropriate in these narrow, windy streets. He gripped his staff anxiously, using it to pull him back to his feet and readying it as a weapon, rather than walking stick.

He looks down the street littered with bodies, unable to see very far without the view being obscured by smoke. He hesitates for a second, considering leaving the city and its troubles behind, then trudges forward to the ruined tower.

Saba was up early today. He had enacted most of the repairs to the tables, but than a few chairs needed fixing. It was a small price to pay for the fun of last night however. Sporting a small shiner on the edge of his right eye, he initially reacts with annoyance as the chair he was repairing breaks apart in his hands. After a moment, that shifts to curiosity, and a bit of excitement when he comes out of the builder's zone (State of Mind). He shout to the barkeep

I am go-ing to check dat (that) out. I'll be bahk (back).

and with that he exits through the front door and looks around.

~ Rose ~
You quickly realize that the person you inspect is sleeping. You can surmise that everyone else is as well, but you would need to inspect them. You think you can hear movement down the street.

You are hearing Garreth

~ Garreth ~
The tower is far off, residing in the center of the city, only those of power were able to live close to it. You pass down a street and see a sea of moveless people, as if the whole city had stopped at once.

~ Sarah ~
You call out to your parents, but hear nothing back. Hurriedly, you run downstairs and find it empty. Moving out into the street, you see a mass of people on cobblestones, further down the street, you see a petite brunette inspecting someone, she looks up and looks further down the street.

You are seeing Rose

~ Saba~
Yelling to anyone who will hear you, awake, dead, or alive, you leave the tavern in the dwarven district heading to the street. Row upon row of people are lying on the floor. You can't tell if they are asleep or dead, but you see no signs of struggle, or wounds.

Sarah calls to the woman, distraught: "You there, human! What is going on? Are they all... dead?" She hesitates, not wanting to say that last word out loud, for fear it is true.

She goes over to the woman and continues, "Is someone bad attacking us? Should I get my armor?"

I'm not sure she'd recognize Rose as a Shifter and not just a plain-old Human. So, no offense meant. :smallwink:

Garreth sorts out his mixed emotions. He feels at home in the sea of silence that he is used to, but can't help but feel that it is out of place in a city such as this. He is almost startled as he hears voices. Speeding his pace to a swift trot he stops as he sees the two women huddled over one of the bodies. He pauses and ducks to the wall of the nearest building.

He slings his quarterstaff along his back and pulls out his longbow, readying an arrow. He watches the two cautiously, almost suspiciously.

Everyone in the city is asleep or dead, yet these two are unaffected?

Saul had been waiting in the pre-dawn hours for his client to return with payment. He wipes his sleep-deprived eyes and begins looking over the ledger he had recovered once more, squinting while his eyes adjust to the sunlight. He couldn't make any sense of it, but it was valuable to someone.

He should have been here by now, he thinks as the light stretches itself out across the floor of his apartment just north of the Market District. Just as he reaches the window to check outside, he hears the noise.

His reflexes, honed sharp by years in the slums, instinctually drop him to a crouch beneath his window. His heart races as he waits for the noise to subside. Once it dies down, he takes a deep, settling breath and peeks his head over the windowsill.

He raises an eyebrow at the strange sight of absolute stillness in a city usually teeming with life. The eerie quiet sets him on edge, and he opens his door quickly and loudly, hoping just to hear something.

Collapsed just outside his door he finds the pudgy merchant who was paying him to recover the ledger. He looks around at all the other bodies littering the ground, his heart beating a little quicker, but his mind reminding him that he cannot smell the stench of death, and he frowns at the oddity.

He notices on either side of his door, collapsed against the wall, two rather burly men with swords drawn. He frowns, confused, looking around at the situation, and then rolls his eyes and drops his head as he puts it all together.

I guess the ledger was even more important than I realized, he thinks as he checks them for pulse, finds them alive, then checks them for money, and finds nothing. He purses his lips and goes back inside, grabs the ledger, tucks it into the merchant's jacket, and draws a dagger.

He holds his dagger at the man's throat, debating for a moment whether or not to kill him. Finally he decides against it and slits all three of the men's hamstrings, then heads out into the city, keeping to the shadows, looking for any sign of life.

Kara opens her eyes, awakened by the sound, emitting a shriek. Wha-? She presses her hands on her ringing ears, not able to really proceed what was happening, and stumbles out of her bedroom, into the living room towards the window that goes down to the main street. Wincing, she opens the curtains to get a glimpse at whatever had caused this sound. Her body hurts from last nights work - first performing with the acrobats, and then a few hours of waitressing - but right now, her ears hurt more.

She had lived in her apartment in the Art District for around a year now, her second apartment after moving out of her parents' house -- or as they would prefer to say: The house of her generous aunt and uncle who took in the poor soul that resulted from many bad choices. The houses in the Art District are as diversified as its inhabitants. Kara has rented the upper floor of a small bakery, her living room window going on the main street, her bedroom window to the back; her apartment consists of a small bedroom and a living room with a combined kitchen. Many of her neighbors are artists such as painters, perfomers, sculptors, authors - or simply people who enjoy living between them. Some of the inhabitants are richer, some poorer, some hard-working and others lazier -- and many prefer extravagant or eccentric lifestyles even if on a low standard. Money is simply not so much of a topic here. A good share of the inhabitants do drugs, some because they like it, others because they claim that it increases their creativity, and of course also those who like both or are addicted. Traditionally, only few are of noble or otherwise rich heritage, with the exception of some misfits who were practically outcast by their families. Lately however, also richer people have started to move here, attracted by the "artsy", "romantic" or simply "trendy" flair of the district. As a consequence, the prices for new house owners or tenants went up.

Sarah smiles back warmly. But she gives a nervous laugh. "Specialist? Me? I don't know about that. I'll go get my stuff and be right back down, though. 'Plan a picnic, but bring your battleaxe', like my mom always says."

She goes and dresses, and then appears back on the street. Sarah is skinny, as dwarves go. She has ginger hair but definitely her most distinctive feature is her eyes, which instead of the usual blue or green color have metallic-looking rings, which glint in a similar way as her banded armor. Her (as advertised) axe is shiny and blue - a very traditional wedge shape, though with very intricate carvings. A brass dragon rampant adorns her wooden shield. She would look like any other fine knight, except that her face is still that of a rather shocked teen.

"What should we do? Should we go find a City Watch Captain?"

She sees a man approaching with a longbow and calls, "You there! Don't shoot! Unless... are you attacking us? Did you do this?"

He narrows his eyes at the two. They were acting strangely...

"Don't shoot, unless you're going to attack?" What an odd thing to say...

He would have assumed that, if they were associated with this event (or otherwise hostile) they would be more defensive, more aggressive. Instead they seemed as confused and bewildered about the situation as he did. The shorter one seemed hardy, and armed and geared for battle. Yet she armed herself as an afterthought. He decided that these were not the actions of whoever was behind what was going on.

Slowly, he lowered his bow and unknocked the arrow, placing it back into its quiver and slinging the bow across his back. Silently he strode over toward the pair, looking between them, the bodies strewn about the ground, and the smoking tower before them.

Garreth is clad in a mish-mash of clothing and armor, most of it made of some sort of animal covering or another. Thick hide boots caked with mud, layered leather padding covering his legs and torso. Over it all was a hooded cloak, (hood not drawn). The edges of the cloak were dirty and worn from clear long-term use.

Am I a hunter? Hm...

True, he has hunted. Did that make him a hunter? He has also killed, does that make him a killer? He wasn't a hunter in the sense they meant it - and he knew that - but he also lacked the words (or desire) to adequately describe what he "was." He opted for the middle ground:

"I hunt."

A factual statement, at the least. He wasn't sure what it mattered what they were called or what they did, especially in light of whatever it was that held this city hostage... and why some people inside were spared.

The building with the aforementioned balcony belongs to a small house. The ground floor houses a small bakery with the name of "Adrian's Pastries and Baked Goods" written in big letters over entry and shop window. Just as the others approach, the door flies open, letting a small bell ring.

Kara comes out to the street, and quickly looks into all directions. She wears a strange mix of clothes and just finishes to close her belt: A pair of simple short pants and likewise simple flat shoes/loafers without socks, a much more fashionable blouse, and a wide-brimmed hat. Besides some pouches, her belt holds a rapier with a crested, elaborate handle in a sheath of velvet-studded leather. She could be human, was it not for her tail which she apparently forgot to hide in her panic. Her face is half-covered by the hat, but her movements gives away her anxiety.

Different. Different indeed.

At first he had just lumped them into the group of "city dwellers", not really taking the time to perceive them as individuals. This comment had stuck out in his mind, perhaps causing him to rethink his position. Even then, it would be a while before he would feel comfortable trusting them.

"My name's Kara... And looking at you, I feel a bit unprepared for this whole thing... Was waken up by this... whatever this is. But anyways, I should probably get some armor, right?" Well, that was smooth... Anger went through her mind because she behaved so fickle, and sat down with panic to have a nice little talk.

She obviously just got up from her bed; a pair of small horns poking through her tousled red hair. The horns, the tail, and a few patches of copper color at the hairline -- disregarding all that, she looks human. Well, the ears are also pointy, so maybe half-elf.

As the group approaches the tower, Garreth looks for a building with rough wall, with suitable handholds and ledges for climbing. After finding such a building he walks up to the side. He sets his staff and pack on the floor at the base of the building (keeping his bow slung across his back) and carefully makes his way up the side of the building. Arriving at the top he scans across the skyline of the city, looking for anything notable (other than the smoking tower, of course).

Dropping the staff and backpack puts me back at a light load, so no check penalty to the climb, on which I Take 10 (for a result of 10). Against a suitably climbable wall, I hope this is ok.

Fons

One of the main advantages of living and sleeping in the streets is you are more in-tune with the state of the city: Its (the peoples') moods, its vibe and what can be done where to help those in need. One of the main drawback is large-scale explosions. Luckily they normally don't occur, and luckily Fons found himself out of harms way on this unfortunate morning.

Highly alarmed by the ruckus and potential suffering that went along with it, Fons speeds out of the alley in search for clues as to what had happened, and in search for people in need of help.

As Saul skulked through the streets, he found that in the unsettling quiet of the afflicted city, he could hear voices. He followed the sound through the Art District, toward the Tower of the....

Wait....

Where is the Tower? he thinks, confused. His eyes widen and his heart quickens at the realization that the entire Tower of the Archmage had collapsed. That explains the noise, he thinks dryly, trying to calm himself down.

He keeps moving with a new determination. Doesn't explain the unconscious people everywhere, though.

Finally, he catches up with the group of people who had been talking. He hides nearby and listens to their conversation as closely as he can. They don't seem like they could be responsible for whatever was going on, considering only half of them looked like they knew what they were doing. He'd seen a couple of them before from a distance, but for the most part they were all new to him.

Just then, Fons came running out of an alley, surprising the little group. He decided to wait and observe their interaction with the newcomer before approaching them.

"Hey, are you okay?" Kara asks the newcomer. If the others have hidden, she has not. She is wearing now a fine-worked leather armor in gray color and a matching helmet, which substitutes her wide brimmed hat. Her tail is now hidden beneath a dark gray cloak. She also carries a quiver with a short bow and a few arrows on her back now. The rapier on her belt is still sheathed and her body language is rather inviting the newcomer over.

It took her a few minutes to change, I guess, but either you people waited or she found you; she knows the area quite well and is rather fleet of feet.

Fons

The rugged, unkempt, to be honest quite smelly figure darts straight forward into whatever remains of the group after his prescence got known. Unarmed, unarmored, dressed in a gown the typical commoner would be ashamed of Fons peers around and regards whatever moves sympathetically: "What happened? Is everyone all right?" He takes in the damage and the carnage and shakes his head. "Oh, my..." While it looks nervously, onlookers quickly notice that it is actually determined yet, hmmmm, "animalistically" (?), Fons darts around the area: Looking sniffing, growling (is he actually growling?), frowning. "What happened?" he asks again. You notice Fons is not afraid of anything, and not of you for sure. He does not hide himself, his curiousity and his drive to make whatever happened right.

He looked around nervously as people started to rise and awaken. He had come into the city right as this event happened, so had no expectations about noise or the hustle and bustle. As the sleeping city slowly arose, and people's confused murmurs became excited (and sometimes hysterical) shouts and yells he gripped his staff a bit tighter.

He looked back to the group behind him. He was tempted to leave them behind; this was their city after all. It was returning to normal and they would return to their normal lives. He - however - was here for a reason and he was certain it had something to do with what just happened.

Then doesn't it have something to do with 'them'? Aren't they tied up with this thing just as you are?

He watches them for a bit. Sighing to himself he stepped back toward the group.

"We should keep going. If they're waking up, their troubles are over. Whatever happened there involves us somehow. We need to figure it out."

He wasn't an orator or a diplomat, just straight to the point. If it convinced them it did, if not, he'd keep going. Navigating around the now awake crowds of people - keeping his distance - he resumed the trek toward the tower.

I'm ready.

As Saul makes his surprise entrance, you make your way down to the tower, only moving a street or to, the crowds were thick, and people were abuzz. What had happened, why was the Archmages tower smoking? and why had they awoken in the streets?

All questions you could here on almost everyone passing, or at the very least, see in their bestranged eyes.

But then something else happened, as if all of what had already happened wasn't enough.

You hear a scream, which echoes down the street. Soon after, a troop of watchmen run over towards where it came, the 5 of them clad in breastplates and spears, looked as confused as everyone else.

Do you follow and investigate, or skirt around them and head towards the tower?

Soldiers.

Unmistakeable in any environment. Garreth did not have a particularly high opinion of them. Not that he suffered or witnessed extreme brutality or corruption at their hands, but rather his opinion was forged in the lack of witnessing. Wherever he traveled and saw people in need, commoners who could use the help of a sword or spear, they were nowhere to be found. Like his own doomed village, the poor were left alone to be trod upon by the uncaring troubles of the world.

It seemed to him that soldiers were reserved for the rich and powerful while the people who needed protection the most had to do without. Regardless, wherever that scream came from, the soldiers would be handling it - this did not seem to concern him.

He continued his way toward the tower.

The group moves in relatively the same direction, seeing as the tower was in the same direction as the scream.

As you approach the scene however, something else entirely plays out.

It starts with people running away from the guards, and you can now make out, through the crowd pushing against you, 3 guards down on the floor, spears dropped, and heavy breathing, 1 is kneeling, holding a bloody arm, while the 5th, most likely the sergeant is holding his spear leveled, and shouting at someone with blood dripping from her mouth.

She is staring vacantly at the guard, with hunger in her eyes as she is crouched down, tearing at one of the fallen guards.

Well, that's a horse of a different color.

Garreth felt his level of anxiety increasing, but it wasn't just due to the increasing density of the crowds. There was a tenseness in the air and he could feel it, but not place it. It was not helped by the fact that they appeared to be going in the same direction as the guards, though he was relieved, slightly, as they hurried off ahead of them.

He was annoyed when the crowd became thick, making it harder to push through, but the shouts and screams made his stomach sink. As people began to flea, and he was able to see what the guards were surrounding, he froze. It took him a moment to gather his composure at the horrid sight. He kept his distance, letting his staff dropp to the ground as he readied and knocked his bow.

He reaches out to tap Garreth on the shoulder, hoping to make introductions. It was always a good idea to stick with the practical people you can hide behind when things get hairy. But just as he does so, the ranger tenses.

Saul pulls back his hand to rest on one of his darts as he notices the crowd growing hysterical. Trying to remain hidden, he creeps through the crowd to the source of the scream, sticking to shadows and keeping behind people's legs, drawing a dart as he does so.

That's probably useless now, he thinks as he puts it away and draws a dagger from his belt. He studies the blade as he slinks deeper into the shadows of the buildings around them, moving slowly to a position behind the girl while she...it....is distracted.

Looking down the street, you see a dozen zombies either way, several of them are munching on victims who struggling to get free, but failing, no one is helping them as they run for their lives.

If there is more than 1 zombie inside, he will instead flee.
If there is 1 zombie inside, he will attempt to throw it in order to buy the time needed to grab the nails.
If there are 0 zombies inside he will quickly scan for the nail box.
If he manages to grab nails, he will drop some coins on the counter. (If no living occupants are there)

As the group assess the situation, seeing the bakery, they rush towards it, except Saba, who opens the smithies door, and finds 2 worker boys who turn around slowly, clearly zombies, one has an arm missing, and the other had been horribly burned, by coals or hot metal.

Both slowly regard you with blank eyes, and groan at your presence. Seeing them changes your mind, and you rush back out, to see several zombies coming down the street, shambling like the dead things they were. But to your surprise, you see something move much faster, and closer than you hoped.

The speeding creature was a local man, who was loping on all fours towards you, it was obviously undead, but moved with the speed you have never seen before!

Running to the door, you managed to grab it as the thing approaches, opening the door, everyone inside grabs and pulls you in, slamming the door shut just in time for the thing to arrive and reach out for....nothing.

Panting, you look at everyone inside the bakery with a sheepish grin.

The bakery is a two story building, with stairs that lead up, the bottom is still warm from the morning cooking, and rows of freshly baked goods, pasties, pastries, breads of all kinds, line the counters in the back. You find no one on the first floor, and it seems whoever owned this establishment had either ran to somewhere else, or is fallen outside.

(those of you who are hungry start to feel it)

Anyway, I don't think there's an entrance to them in this bakery, and I'm not sure I'd know how to get anywhere anyway."

He laughs nervously, trying to relieve his own anxiety, but it doesn't help.

"I can keep myself hidden in the darkness easily enough, so maybe I could wait this whole thing out here," he looks around at all the food.

After a moment of silence, he sighs and continues "But I know I can't do that. Much as I try to pretend otherwise, I have people I care about here too." Suddenly, his face brightens (from a grayish pale to a slightly whiter pale). The pantry creaks open with dust and dirt spilling over the edges, even with your attempts to sweep it clean before hand. Down below is dark and you can tell this pantry is rarely used. You see a small step ladder, and after poking your head with a makeshift torch, you can see this is the storage larder for the bakery. Huge bags of flour, oats, and massive jugs of honey. It's particularly cold, and well kept, and you don't find anything else.

Going upstairs finds similar results. The stairs are creaky, and anything, or anyone who was up there would have known before you arrived, thankfully, nothing is awaiting your arrival, except for a well kept bedroom. There is a hatch on the ceiling, and opening that, you manage to get out onto the roof, which expands to allow you to see the street.

All the buildings in this street are connected, and you think you could make your way across them, most are balcony type roofs, with railings. However, others are slanted tile and slate roofs.

Looking out to the street, you can see a few meandering people, slowly wandering around...they look like zombies, and this is confirmed when a cat zooms past one, and it lurches at it, but is too slow.

As you all gather on the roof after storing any unwanted gear, you look towards the Tower, smoke still billowing from its once pristine stump. A part of you sinks as you recall the majesty that the tower bought to the city. It was once the jewel of the realm, over looking the nation, with a stern but caring eye. Archmage Harandel, was a kind man, but he kept the peace. And this....this could not mean anything good.

But he was an archmage, if anyone could survive such a thing, it would be him.

As you all prepare to jump roofs towards it, a massive, thundering booms reverberates through the city. Unlike a sound any of you have heard, its echoes shake your bones, and you get instant flashbacks of the explosion that awoke you this morning. But this was different, it kept coming.

BOOOOOM

Having been ready to move one direction, and then hearing the movement below and the large pounding booms that still reverberate the air, you all decide to change direction, moving to the other side of the roof, you all manage to scarper up and over the railing just in time before several zombies stumble up the stairwell.

Moving across the first roof was treacherous at best, but with some teamwork, and coordination, you managed to get over to the next area. It takes time, but you manage to work your way across several roofs and gardens to a building at the end of the block, the Booming sounds still coming from the dwarven embassy. Once their, you are thankful that the owner has a nice trellis setup with vines in his rooftop garden, allowing you to peer through and witness a strange sight.

Across the square, which is the transition from the city to the Dwarven embassy, and thus the threshold to the Rubilaer Dwarf kingdom that stretches into the tunnel severl hundred feet past the square and into the Greyback mountains that overlook the city. You can see a stout dwarf, pounding on the air...? the golden ripples are emanating from where his mighty hammer is smacking what could only be some form of magical wall.

Behind him are several dozen dwarves and few non dwarves, watching and waiting, some with forlorn looks, and others crying.

It is obvious, and as many of you find out, your heads look up and then keep going as the ripples curve over the city, as if a large domelike wall of force covered it.

There do not seem to be anything moving on the other side.

The group splits up, most heading to the houses again, while the zombies shuffle closer still. It is obvious, one of the group of zombies looks different, as if he had a hunger behind his undead eyes.

Fons

"To the western door. Hurry!" Fons moves southwards (W20) while urgung his new friends to safety. He keeps a keen eye on Jeff, who seems to have skipped breakfast this morning. When his comrades indeed move towards the western door, he will use his standard action to move westwards as well, keeping himself between the undead and the living.

Do we recognize him as Jeff, the guy from the horse-cart repair shop? :smallwink: :smalltongue:

"My thoughts exactly!" she shouts while darting towards the door (and possibly into the house).

Run action for up to 160ft = 32 squares. From my current position, I think I can even make it to the western door.

Still trembling in fear, Saul follows the lead of the braver looking warriors he's fallen in with and runs toward the western door.

Using Run action to move 120 feet or 24 squares to G29.

Sarah follows the others. She knows she should get inside with the others, but leaving her dad is difficult. Plus, her shorter legs have to work twice as hard.

Running, but keeping a wary eye behind for speedy zombies.

You all manage to get into the doorway of the closest house, while Garreth and Tillot charge the undead shambling towards them!

They scream as they do, getting of a few arrows, and felling one zombie before you duck into the house, you hear screams and shouting, but not for long. Things die down, and the streets are quiet again.

The four of you share a knowing glance, and look around the room you entered for the first time.

It was a strange house, a table with four chairs, with a living room in the back, that was dark. An oil lamp sits on the table, and a crate of apples on the floor, half full. Cards litter the table, left seemingly in the middle of a game. The shutters in the front were strange, and made to dampen any light if closed.

If you had to guess, this was a smuggling den.

Kara quickly closes the door. "Why didn't they run?" she winces. "Is, is there another entry?" She asks, while looking around, and stepping towards the shutters to cautiously close them too. "Where... Where do we go?"

Fons

Being the last one to enter the building and hearing Karaīs plea, Fons slams the door shut. BAM!

"Hey!" Fons does not mean to be nasty, but he does mean to slam his friends out of the panic attack. "Take it easy..." his voice is soft and soothing now: "remember, we have the merciful and just Gods on our side." He smiles. "Have faith. We will manage this." He looks around and starts thinking. "Letīs all take some of these apples. We may need them as nourishment soon." Fons pockets a couple of apples, assured it can not violate his vow under these conditions.

"You have seen I am a warrior, I need to know what you think you are. Weīll have to work together and learn to know each other." Fons moves to find objects to bar the door. "It is us versus them...letīs show why the Gods have chosen us to survive!"

Sarah just makes it inside as the door slams shut. "I just can't even right now, okay, ...Fons, was it? I can't believe those two would just charge the zombies instead of coming with us. Now what are we going to do?" She looks shaken by all this, but calms herself, breathing slowly a couple times. "We have to find a way out, to turn off that barrier or go under it or something."

"Scavenging food may be what it's come to, though. Who knows how long we'll be trapped in here." Her voice starts to crack again a little. "No. We have to survive. Let's be warriors, as you say."

"I am not exactly a warrior, I guess. I know how to fence, I know how to shoot a bow. But you have seen how they react to such attacks.
I don't even know where to aim my arrows at. Normally I know where it hurts. But those creatures...
She pauses shortly to shrug off the memory of the lack of impression she made to it by piercing one of the creatures' main artery. "I know how to run though. And I know the city. My place is on the floor of a bakery. There is also a well not far away. And maybe you guys could teach me some, you know, more blunt techniques."

Saul listens to the others as he tries to calm his breathing in a corner.

"I'm not much of a fighter," he finally says. "Matter of fact, I'm damn good at avoiding them, but I don't think that's much help with these things. All I'm good at is hiding, and..."

He hangs his head, ashamed, thinking of the two others who had almost certainly died giving them enough time to get to safety. "I don't know what I'm supposed to do." He takes a mournful bite out of a smaller apple.

Fons smiles. "I am sure weīll make one hell of a team," he says while continuing to barricade the door. "Letīs take this one step at a time. First survive this. If anyone has ranged weapons, maybe we can take them on from higher ground...a window upstairs or the roof." He keeps looking around for useful things.

Upstairs

Moving upstairs, you find it opens to the whole floor, which is littered in rags of bedding, pillows, feathers and detritus of living are strewn about at what seems to be the sleeping quarters for a dozen people or so.

It's completely abandoned, and feels like everyone ran in a hurry.

Among the littered stuff, you find [roll0] silver pieces, [roll1] copper, and 1 gold coin. As well as several fine cigars in a box in the corner, a worn golden wedding band, a very nice knife, and a small black key.

Downstairs
The stairs lead down into the murky basement, which in and of itself is strange. Only rich folk, or taverns have basements. This one emptied into a large cellar like room, the floor is obvious with wear, and a big double door blocks any further progress. It seems to be locked.

Sarah knocks at the basement door. If there is no response, she tries again with her axe. She examines the door to see whether it might be able to just be broken open. "Thoughts?" she queries to Kara.

Kara grins and puts a finger on her mouth, as if gesturing her to hush or to keep it a secret. She then nestles around in her pack to retrieve a small pack of tools wrapped in a piece of leather. She crouches in front of the door, further studying the closing mechanisms. Assuming she finds nothing unusual, she will try to pick the lock.

You don't find anything on the lock that may be untoward, or out of place and attempt to unlock it with your picks. But fail to do so, it's just...out of your skill range.

Kara shrugs and looks very disappointed. "Sorry." She put together her tools again and then goes up the stairs again. "Maybe the others have found something upstairs."

Upon meeting the others again, she says: "There's a locked door downstairs, and I'd really like to know what's behind. The doors look solid, could also be a good bunker. You folks found something?"

Once someone has shown her the key she goes downstairs again to see if the key could match. Before she tries it out however, she first holds her ear against the door to see if she hears something behind it. If not, she tries out the key.

You hear....the trickle of water, but much less so a trickle, and more of a gentle lapping. As if...you try the key, the lock opens with a snap, no other sound comes from behind, and slowly edging the door open....you find an underground canal.

Water slaps against the sides of a stone jetty lazily in the dark, a single boat sites tied to one of the moorings, and a gang plank rests in its upright position, obviously used to haul cargo to and from the boats.

Fons, still focused on the door and whatever may be going on outside, turns around and eyes kara quizzically. "A well of holy water? The high priest of Pelor with nothing else to do?" He sounds a bit cynical, but the expression on his face makes clear that he is making fun. An odd thing in itself: the wolf-man must have a lot of faith in the quality of his own fate. He peers outside a second and then turns to Kara with big, round eyes: "Honey-cakes?"

Saul mumbles, "I guess I'll go search upstairs, then," as the others head down to the basement.

He cautiously searches through everything, pocketing everything useful, and heads back downstairs.

He gives Kara a quizzical look when she mentions the locked door. "You think this might fit?" he asks, producing the small black key and grinning slightly, the first thing resembling a smile that he's given all day.

"Allright. I guess that makes sense." Guessing is what he is doing indeed, he has no clue and that is quite obvious. "Good job, Kara." He looks around and asks with genuine concern: "Is everyone still allright?" He skewers an apple on his right claw and starts munching it. "Weīll be fine." He is hoping that a display of physical prowess and mental calm may rub off on the others, calming everyone down a bit. "Itīs just heaps of rotting muscle we face. "Was anyone wounded by them before we closed the door?" Sarah checks, just in case, sounding concerned.

"Having seen them a few times now, I think we need to resolve to hurt them if we must. I don't like it, but I can't believe those shambling people could kill our friends if they had any shred of their senses left."
