If you fall unconscious in battle with a staus effect like exhausted or burning. But you make your saves and are no longer at zero HP. Does the bad effect drop off or will it persist?

Persist. Also even if you stabilize, via making your death saves you are still at zero hit points and still unconscious, unless you rolled a natural 20.

EDIT: Imagine if exhaustion levels fell off as soon as people fell down. Berserkers would see a lot more play even asking to be purposefully knocked out between fights and healed back up to remove exhaustion levels.

Indeed. Its actually a common houserule to give a level of exhaustion when brought up from 0 HP

If it was possible to cure a negative effect just by repeatedly punching the patient, it would have made quite a breakthrough in medicine ...

So there is no actual raw on this just common sense

Both. Conditions tell you what causes them to end, and unless it specifically says it ends when you fall unconscious it persists.

There is no rule that says you don't stop burning when your PC eats a hotdog, but that doesn't make it vague as to whether or not eating a hot dog would put the fire out. Both are about equally likely to do so. (Unless you are falling into water or some such.)

Point is D&D doesn't always make realistic sense, but a lot of video game type rules need not apply.

Of course if as DM you prefer a more video game feel, you can adopt house rules.

From PHB Appendix A: "A condition lasts either until it is countered or for a duration specified by the effect
that imposed the condition". There are two ways to git rid of a condition: counter it, run out the clock.

An action/spell is a counter to a condition if the PHB says it is (for example, the PHB says standing up ends the prone condition). Otherwise the action/spell is not a counter to any conditions. So the answer is very much RAW: Falling unconscious does not end any conditions.

Bardo.
