I want to see how many people are of like minded musical interest in the forum. I myself listen to Metal/Alternative/Rock/Punk. Basically the whole Genre. My favorite band is Avenged Sevenfold (aka, Beast and the Harlot from Guitar Hero II if it helps you recognize them), along with old Blink 182 stuff, My Chemical Romance, and Tiger Army is good, too. I'll stop there so I dont ramble on.

What do you guys like?

I like Symphonic Metal. (Rhapsody of Fire, Nightwish, Avantasia)

Also, Classical, well not technically classical, but like Violins and Chellos. (ie. Vanessa Mae and Apocalyptica)

And some bands I don't know the classification of. Like E Nomine.

Edit: According to Pandora.. some things I like are..

Vocal-centric aesthetic (?), and minor key tonality (?). Not a clue what those are.

I will listen to just about anything; although most of my collection is rock, blues, folk, or country. not much in that last two though, mostly just stuff that also falls into rock.

I also listen to some jazz, electronic, and classical, but I don't have any albums; nor could I tell you one song from the other in most cases.

A lot of stuff...Whatever I find interesting, mainly indie & alternative, from any time period. Also more traditional rock/pop sources, but specially stuff that left any influence on alternative/indie artists. Or any original and significant musical expression, which is saying the same.

Right now I'm listening to the Comsat Angels, a great early 80's post-punk band that have a style that could be related to Joy Division, Echo & The Bunnymen and early U2. They have the kind of sound some bands would kill for today. Their early stuff is surprisingly good. Go for the "Sleep No More" album.

I like...

Alternative (particularly from the 90's), poopfist, Ska, and Celtic Rock, I guess pretty much upbeat stuff with a unique sound to it.

The first music I listened to was classic rock that my parents listened too. From there I got into hard rock. From there, I moved into metal, starting with power and symphonic and currently branching into heavy/thrash metal. I also listen to music from musicals. So the music I listen to is:

classic/prog/hard rock
power/symphonic/heavy/thrash metal
Broadway musicals
some jazz

Metal. Typically, anything with either an epic or a proggy edge tends to be my favorite. Virgin Steele, Manilla Road, Iron Maiden, Atheist, Metal Church, Blind Guardian, Pharaoh, Mekong Delta and such.

My currently most-played album is Waltari's "Yeah! Yeah! Die! Die! A Death Metal Symphony in Deep C", which is basically finnish classical with death metal and a little bit of rap and hardcore techno integrated into the symphony. Amazing how well those contrasts work together.

Metal (although I steer towards Epic, Power, Thrash and Symphonic more than anything). I used to be an 'all genres' guy, but ever since I heard my first Nightwish I've been an exclusive metal/rock fan. :smalltongue:

Folk metal! Folk metal! Folk metal!

I like folk metal, but am quite ignorant of any sort of folky punk. (Well it's entirely possible that I know of them, and even listen to them, but simply haven't identified any part of them as folky)

So, got any folky punk recomendations?

Also, checking my music, it appears that I prefer music that I don't understand due to language differences. Huh. But as for the genres mentioned in the OP, yep to pretty much all of them.

I started with classic rock n metal from the 70s, then I started listening to hard rock n heavy metal, the nice, good 80s style.
Now I found the music I love:
progressive rock. King Crimson, Camel, Eloy, etc.

My favourite band is Rainbow and Led Zeppelin. And Black Sabbath. And GnR. And I think RJ DIO has the best voice ever.
I like celtic music too, and some post-rock bands.

I wouldn't call that 'folky' punk, at least I don't consider folky to be Irish exclusively. Maybe I'm getting my definitions mixed up, but if i'm not, I'd call it... Irish punk? Fine, I'll call it kickass Punk from the land of green lepricons, cant get mixed up there.

My tastes are nothing if not eclectic, but I tend to prefer Celtic, Classical and Jazz, with country, classical/light rock, indi, and easy listening thrown in.

I'm told that the music I like best would be described as 'eerily beautiful'. That while pretty it gives them the willies.

I detest almost all grunge, heavy metal and rap (though I like scat which many tend to think is old school rap for some reason). Anything with folks screaming or making a bunch of white noise is out.

I detest almost all grunge,

But I love Nirvana....Anyway most of the time grunge does not = screamo. Only a couple songs involve Kurt sreaming his head off. That being said I shall list bands/artists I like;

u2
Pink Floyd
Nirvana
Rolling Stones
Jimi Hendrix
Bob Dylan
Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Eagles
Led Zepplin
Townes Van Zandt
Eric Clapton
Bob Marley
Lynyrd Skynyrd
+ many more minor bands

I like most classic 70's rock bands with some folkish elements thrown in. A few pop songs don't hurt either.
Bolded bands are ones that I like alot.

I also like a lot of other stuff like frank zappa, heyseed dixie (a hillbilly AC/DC cover band), string music(violens, chellos etc.) but im mainly into metal. And a bit of southern rock/metal. The only things i cant stand are emo, screamo, hardcore dance and posers. I really hate posers.

Trampoline Girl is clearly the best of their work.

As far as what I listen to, it's a big range. I listen to a lot of Futurepop, EBM, New Wave, Downbeat, and Rockabilly, for starters. I'm a huge Pogues fan, I adore Elvis Costello (especially his earlier aggro sound), a once upon a time club kid with a soft spot for jungle and house, a sometimes listener of some good old goth music, and a fan of some of the 80's alternative/post punk/guitar jangle acts like The Smiths, and The Housemartins. I'm also a fan of some punk (The Clash, The Misfits, The Ramones), ska (The Specials, Madness), and like my rap old (Run DMC, Sugar Hill Gang).

All in all, I listen to a lot of different stuff, though I go through phases where I listen to more of one thing than anything else, but never to exclusion.

Aye, that stuff I would begin with to explain my tastes... but I tend to lean more to the stuff that sounds like your toilet pipe is gurgling from a couple of decades of blockage (or something of the sort). Power metal's good if we're talking Nevermore and the like, I like me some doom/death (Draconian, Shape of Despair, etc), and there's also a fair share of "alternative metal" (Deftones, Slipknot, you know the types of bands).

By the way, I can tell someone here's a fan of Finntroll.

Zuratal, hurray for the Fruvous love. I don't see much of it anymore these days.

I like all sorts of stuff. My favoritest of bands is Blind Guardian. I've been listening to them non stop for 6 or 7 years.

Lately I've been listening to Rush, Jonathan Coulton, and Oingo Boingo. Eclectic much?

I like folk metal in theory, but most of what I've heard has growling instead of vocals. I can't stand that stuff. Usually I don't even pay attention to lyrics, but the growling just ruins songs for me. The exceptions to this are Tuatha de Danaan since their lead singer sings clearly and Falkenbash since they're just damned good. In both cases, the growling usually serves some sort of purpose and isn't the only kind of vocalization in a song. I've given up on finding new folk metal though, since so much of it gets thrown out due to the singing, so if anyone has any recommendations I'll be happy to check them out.

You know, everybody speculates that Tupac is still alive, but I've never heard anyone question Tolkien's state, and he's been steadily publishing materials posthumously for *looks up original publication date for The Silmarillion* 30 years.

Anyway, most of the stuff I like could be called "alternative mainstream." Pink Floyd, The Smashing Pumpkins, Yes. Then there's King Crimson and DragonForce. Of course The Beatles were the greatest band ever, followed by The Who.

I happen to consider myself of a rather musical nature, I literally go into music shops and grab random CDs and then listen to them(I now have 1068 CDs and 105 Vinyl Records in my collection) through my bass and stage amps (I also happen to play bass, guitar and keyboards). I dont hate or love genres of music. My collection Ranges from Classical to Death metal(though cannibal corpse should ditch the vocalist due to him ruining their exceptional intrumentals). I have to say the I am rather found of Frank Zappa, that man really happens to be somewhat of my own personal god and thats a big thing considering my atheistism... what ever you call it. They cant get rid of corpsegrinder (if thats who you mean and not the original, i cant think of his name right now). Theyd have to get jack owen back cause he wrote their best music which is very, very unlikely. Although i will agree that their instrumentals are amazing.

I reckon they can get rid of corpsegrinder... because his lyrics put everyone off the actual music, even if it is for just one straight out instrumental album like Hot Rats (for all of you frank zappa fans). Just to demonstrate their musical capabilities instead of having everything surrounded around vocals... sort of like 'In Flames'. A good band, but too much vocals (wicked screaming) and guitar heavy, you can barely hear the drums and can't hear the bass. Betty Davis actually had a good instrumental line up and it wasn't too heavy the way through the LPs, Same goes for Stanely Clarke though it was rather bass heavy it tended to tangle well with everything else to give a good unique jazz sound so that is maybe one exception. Job For A Cowboy, Tool, Dream Theatre and KoRn (for all you metal fans, KoRn is no longer Nu-Metal all their older stuff is but they have drifted into alternate) are just examples of very well rounded bands.

I'm also a big fan of symphonic/melodic/power metal, although i do dabble with the "harder" metals, some rock and even on occassion a bit of rap. It's a big change from a few years ago, where the only music i listened to (if at all) was "pop" or indie rock. it's funny how tastes evolve! I dont find that hes lyrics put people off, its generally just the fact he growls and doesnt "sing" that usually puts people off. In musical terms, they dont need him at all, he doesnt write any of the music and very few, if any, of the lyrics. Jack Owen wrote their best stuff i think. He wrote the music and lyrics for decency defied, the wretched spawn, festering in the crypt and nothing left to mutilate, which are some of my favourite corpse songs, on the wretched spawn album
I dont like Dream Theaters singer, hes good but i dont like hes style, its too much like power/speed metal. I cant listen to a lot of tools stuff but some of their stuff is awesome.

with that in mind, i tend towards 2nd and 3rd generation industrial, specificaly EMB, Synth and Darkwave, but some noise and grindcore stuff, and lots of metal (not nue metal, Linkin Park and Korn arre the antithisis of goo music), but goth/black/symphonic metal, even some power metal, though dragonforce drives me up a wall. I find that listening to energetic power metal like Dragonforce helps uplift my often dark and gloomy mood, even if it's actually quite cheesy. Fantasy metal like Rhapsody of Fire helps me get creative (and some songs make very good boss encounter "BGMs" for RPing).

Add some Stratovarious and Freedom Call on the side.

Then there's anime music, though I tend to shun the more common JRock and JPop stuff in favor of Anison, which is almost exclusively performed by JAM Project. The lyrics are typically very cheesy and campy, rather similar to those of Dragonforce if translated---but the way these aging Japanese singers can wail is just awesome.
