View Full Version : Escape from Tunnocellum

Tunnocellum, more commonly known as Raven's Glass, is a town abutting a mountain range, and set against a shore. No more than an hour's ride will deliver one from one point to the other. A few short days travel is all that is required to leave this bar of land to either the north or the south. To the north both mountains and shore curl west-ward, to the south the mountains eventually level out into sweeping plains.

Forests dot the landscape all along this strip of rocky beaches and impassable mountains, leaving aside those few mountain passes...

Ancient ruins are abundant in this area, and the town it's self it protected from the furies of the sea by an island just slightly too far out for any but a legend to swim. The island is surrounded by tall granite cliffs, and sweeps from north to south creating together with the shore a very large natural harbor.

A great fortress rests upon this island, palatial yet militant in design, as though the work of elves.

All of this you see, just before you realize that you are falling from a great height, far above. Around you are others, some oddly calm, some worried, some stricken still with fear, one screaming 'Weee!' (I cannot resist), and the inevitable... those that have perished from the sudden shock.

The fall takes some time, but as you reach the half-way mark between heaven and earth you feel your descent begin to slow inexorably. And as you would have reached the ground, finally with a feather-light touch, the world is consumed in white. 'Can we do it again?!'

You awake, with dawn, to find yourself standing, facing the buttressed walls of Raven's Glass.

A number of things occur in quick succession... And why was the gnome juggling those eggs?

At the end of a few days, you find yourself together with most of the others settled into the comfortable confines of a gilded cage. A most luxurious prison.

After waking, and having breakfast you notice your door is ajar, and a shadow is moving away from the door towards the guard-room.

As to your room it's self... It is roughly twice your height in width, length, and time and a half your height in depth. The bed is a simple yet comfortable cot. An odd chamber-pot rests in one corner, sitting next to which is an equally odd wash-basin. Each of which seemingly generate their own hot and cold water, and dispose of the same.

The floors are a nice comfortable pine, the walls are worked stone, though covered in tapestries to hold the heat in. A single ever burning torch rests next to the door, with an opaque pot on a stand next to it, with which one covers the flame to provide darkness.

A chest or 'footlocker' as some here have been calling it sits at the foot of your cot.

You notice a small scrap of paper lying just inside of your cell-door.

PF Ninja:
Ninja are proficient with all simple weapons, plus the kama, katana, kusarigama, nunchaku, sai, shortbow, short sword, shuriken, siangham, and wakizashi. They are proficient with light armor but not with shields.

The ninja’s class skills are Acrobatics (Dex), Appraise (Int), Bluff (Cha), Climb (Str), Craft (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Disable Device (Dex), Disguise (Cha), Escape Artist (Dex), Intimidate (Cha), Knowledge (local) (Int), Knowledge (nobility) (Int), Linguistics (Int), Perception (Wis), Perform (Cha), Profession (Wis), Sense Motive (Wis), Sleight of Hand (Dex), Stealth (Dex), Swim (Str), and Use Magic Device (Cha).
Skill Ranks per Level: 8 + Int modifier, +1 human

Skills (ranks/total): Acrobatics 6/15 (17 to jump or tumble), Bluff 7/11, Climb 7/12, Disable Device 7/16, Disguise 6/12 (22 w/hat), Escape Artist 7/16, Perception 7/13, Sense Motive 7/13, Sleight of Hand 7/16 (21 w/gloves), Stealth 7/16

Poison use
Sneak attack +3d6

No Trace (Ex) +2: The DC to track a ninja using the Survival skill increases by +2. In addition, ninja training gives a +2 insight bonus on Disguise skill checks and on opposed Stealth checks whenever he is stationary and does not take any action for at least 1 round.

Uncanny Dodge (Ex): Cannot be caught flat-footed; does not lose Dexterity bonus to AC if the attacker is invisible.

Light Steps (Ex)
As a full-round action, can move up to twice speed, ignoring difficult terrain. While moving in this way, any surface will support him, no matter how much he weighs. This allows him to move across water, lava, or even the thinnest tree branches. He must end his move on a surface that can support him normally. He cannot move across air in this way, nor can he walk up walls or other vertical surfaces. When moving in this way, he does not take damage from surfaces or hazards that react to being touched, such as lava or caltrops, nor does he need to make Acrobatics checks to avoid falling on slippery or rough surfaces. Finally, when using light steps, the ninja ignores any mechanical traps that use a location-based trigger.

Ki Pool (Su): 6 pts = 1/2 ninja level + Charisma modifier +2 Extra Ki
As long as he has at least 1 point in his ki pool, he treats any Acrobatics skill check made to jump as if he had a running start. By spending 1 ki point, a ninja can make one additional attack at his highest attack bonus, but only when making a full attack. In addition, he can spend 1 point to increase his speed by 20 feet for 1 round. Finally, a ninja can spend 1 point from his ki pool to give himself a +4 insight bonus on Stealth checks for 1 round. Each of these powers is activated as a swift action. A ninja can gain additional powers that consume ki points by selecting certain ninja tricks. The ki pool is replenished each morning after 8 hours of rest or meditation; these hours do not need to be consecutive.

Ninja tricks:
2: Vanishing Trick (Su): As a swift action, the ninja can disappear for 1 round per level. This ability functions as invisibility. Using this ability uses up 1 ki point.
4: Sudden Disguise (Su): As a swift action, the ninja can change his appearance for 1 minute per level. This ability functions as disguise self. Each use of this ability uses up 1 ki point.
6: Darkvision (Su): Range of 60 feet, 1 hour. Using this trick is a standard action that costs 1 ki point.

PF Sorcerer: Harrow Bloodline
Twisted Fortune (Sp): At 1st level, you can use your supernatural insight to hijack the fortunes of a single target within 30 feet. For 1 round, the target becomes confused and cannot directly control its actions (Will negates DC 12). Once a creature has been affected by twisted fortune, it is immune to the ability’s effects for 24 hours. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Cha modifier (4/day).

Spells/day: 4 1st
Spells known:
0th: acid splash, detect magic, light, message
1st: mage armor, shield

3.5 Ninja: +8 skill pts at level 7

AC Bonus (Ex): When unarmored and unencumbered, a ninja adds his Wisdom bonus to Armor Class. In addition, a ninja gains a +1 bonus to AC at 5th level. These bonuses to AC apply even against touch attacks or when a ninja is flat-footed. The character loses these bonuses when immobilized or helpless, when he wears any armor, when he carries a shield, or when he carries a medium or heavy load.

Sudden Strike (Ex): +4d6
Whenever a ninja's target is denied a Dexterity bonus to Armor Class (whether the target actually has a Dexterity bonus or not), the ninja deals an extra 3d6 points of damage.
This damage also applies to ranged attacks against targets up to 30 feet away. Creatures with concealment, creatures without discernible anatomies, and creatures immune to extra damage from critical hits are all immune to sudden strikes. A ninja can't make a sudden strike while striking the limbs of a creature whose vitals are out of reach.
A ninja can't use sudden strike to deliver nonlethal damage. Weapons capable of dealing only nonlethal damage don't deal extra damage when used as part of a sudden strike. The extra damage from the sudden strike ability stacks with the extra damage from sneak attack whenever both would apply to the same target.

Trapfinding (Ex): A ninja can use the Search skill to locate traps with a DC higher than 20, and can use Disable Device to bypass a trap or disarm magic traps.

Great Leap (Su): At 4th level and higher, a ninja always makes Jump checks as if he were running and had the Run feat, enabling him to make long jumps without a running start and granting a +4 bonus on the jump. This ability can be used only if he is wearing no armor and is carrying no more than a light load.

Acrobatics (Ex): Starting at 6th level, a ninja gains a +2 bonus on Climb, Jump, and Tumble checks.

Ki Power (Su): 8/day = one-half class level plus Wisdom bonus +2 Extra Ki
Ki powers can be used only if a ninja is wearing no armor and is unencumbered. As long as a ninja's ki pool isn't empty, he gains a +2 bonus on Will saves.

Ghost Step (Su): Starting at 2nd level, a ninja can spend one daily use of ki power to become invisible for 1 round. Using this ability is a swift action.

Ki Dodge (Su): When a ninja activates this ability, his outline shifts and wavers, granting concealment (20% miss chance) against all attacks for 1 round. Using this ability is a swift action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity. See invisibility has no effect on concealment granted by the ki dodge ability, but true seeing negates the miss chance. This concealment does not stack with that caused by other effects that grant concealment or by spells such as blink or displacement.

Speed Climb (Ex): A ninja of 7th level or higher can scramble up or down walls and slopes with great speed. He can climb at his speed as a move action with no penalty; however, he must begin and end the round on a horizontal surface (such as the ground or a rooftop). If he does not end his movement on a horizontal surface, he falls, taking falling damage as appropriate for his distance above the ground. A ninja needs only one free hand to use this ability. This ability can be used only if a ninja is wearing no armor and is carrying no more than a light load.

Ron Bishi is a young dark-haired man with oriental features, about 5' 6" tall.

Ron was recruited by the yakuza of Port Sannas at a young age due to his natural talents and became one of the most feared and powerful ninjas in town, famous for his many thefts and his defeat of a giant. However, as he matured he began to rethink the morality of his lifestyle, and he left the yakuza. He spent a little time in a monastary. Later he stole a fortune from the powerful Lord Kunra and used it to improve the town, but this proved his undoing, as he was caught and executed. Upon the Return, he was captured when looking around a rich-looking temple.

Ron peers cautiously at the door. This could be a trap ... but it doesn't make any sense.

He pads over near the door, picks up the scrap of paper, and reads any message it may contain.

It seems that someone is recruiting me for a job ... or wants me to think so. It's a risk, but I'll do as asked - it's the only way to find out for sure what this is about.

Before going anywhere, Ron checks the footlocker just in case there is anything useful inside.

Everything aside from any obvious weapons which you had on your person, and a few changes of clothing, grooming supplies, the like.

A small tin of tiny, hard, sweet flat-breads made with strange seasonings (cookies).

A telescopic cup, and a basic mess kit (knife, spoon, fork, bowl, plate).

Your weapons are being stored in the guardroom, you, like other prisoners are allowed to handle them for maintenance purposes, though always under guard, by guard I mean by people with alchemical substances and crossbows.

Huh. I would have expected them to confiscate my stuff.

Ron dons his gear and gathers everything that seems to be of use - including the everburning torch, which he covers, and heads out.

Using his magic hat, he disguises himself as a guard.

He then attempts to sneak out. Though otherwise following the paper's instructions, he attempts to stop by the guardroom to get his weapons without being seen - though if it's occupied, he may yet decide not to try it.

Two guards currently repose within the room on a two-level bunk. One snores, the other is reading.

As you look into the room through the cracked door, you hear footsteps ascending a nearby stair, conversation floats upwards. (Perception check to attempt to identify both distance and words. They may be turning off on another level after all.)

((They would have taken your things, if they believed magic to be real. This is actually an island off of the coast of an island a distance from the continent in the main campaign. It occurs at a different time than the primary incarnation, at a different location, for different reasons. Aside from a few things, they have for the most part been unaffected by the alterations to their reality here.))

They appear to be talking about some 'magister' having just arrived to inspect and or confirm whether or not any of the objects in the possession of the guests are indeed 'magical' the word magical is dripping with derogatory sarcasm.

The people in question are bringing up the meals, they are heading to the quarters on the level below. Your level is next, most likely being brought by different set of kitchen staff. You should hurry.

The snoring in the guard room stops and the guard rolls off of the top bunk, then heads over to one of the two other doors in the room.

The guard, currently reading gives you a cursory glance. The other room is partially open. You can hear the other guard relieving himself through the crack in the door.

He grunts at your explanation, "Probably last chance to have a look and see. Some supposed artificer is coming by later. Simple tests have proven some of them have abilities. Probably enemy tech we've not heard of yet. Egads, running water was ours alone on this island till some artificer calling himself an 'engineer' came around..." He spits dryly on the floor.

Her footsteps though quiet are not quite silent, you can barely distinguish the whisper of her feet padding upon the floor just behind you and a little to one side.

Guard patrols are more frequent on the lower levels where the real prisoners are kept, presumably because in the case of the 'dangerous' ones running amok, they wouldn't be likely to pass by those that seem relatively peaceful in comparison (The adventurers).

As you follow the directions, coming from one of the stairwells along your path you are halted by a patrol. The man at the front, slightly grizzled and lacking a helmet unlike those of apparently lower rank speaks, "Halt and identify yourself. Prepare for inspection, issue forth your papers."

kinem
2016-10-05, 06:13 PM

"Your papers, now. I'm sure if they escaped they'll be found. But since no alarms have sounded...." He's cut off by the sound of alarms. They must have begun checking their guests equipment for magic, and noticed you were missing.

An odd roaring noise comes from upstairs, and reverberates through the halls. Perhaps it wasn't you missing that caused the alarm after all...

The guards quickly rush past you heading upstairs. A horn blasts a pattern, and more guards rush past in the direction you were heading.

Your companion somehow manages to keep up as you rush alongside the other guards towards the exit... rather remarkably without bumping into anyone.

As you make your way into daylight you find yourself on a wall with a parapet, facing the outward body of water between the local islands and one of the continents farther off to the north.

The guards appear to be taking positions. You see unnaturally heavy fog covering the water below, and whatever wind is likely to exist in such a place appears to have died. (perception check)
There are the tips of masts peaking above the fog, one would tend to think it happens when the bow reaches the peak of a wave... Invaders?

An alarm sounds once more from higher in the fortress.

There does not appear to be any means of egress from this section of the wall, which curves around an interior training yard, and slopes gradually downwards towards the other end, keeping level with the ground below. The guards not recognizing you pay you no heed aside from occasional greetings. (Perception check)
A tightness about the guards' faces belies their worry, and the apparent severity of the situation. The gabble that can be caught suggests this is an unusual circumstance.

Perception Check: DC 10
A somewhat large man leaps from higher in the fortress to a lower section of roofing, and can be seen continuing this pattern until at least he leaps into the water with a loud shout. At least now you know the source of the roaring.
DC 15
His clothing appears torn, and his armor is visible beneath, chain of some kind. A shield is strapped to his back, along with a too large hammer.
DC 20
He appears to be a Goliath, small cuts apparently bled out into his clothing, he is wounded.

Total number of Perception Checks: 3

Ron looks for a place to hide and for a way to get to the south landing as advised in the note.

He asks a nearby guard "Do you know what's going on?"

The soldier in question turns from watching the man leap into the surf to face you. "How in the blazes would I? Giants leaping into the ocean, strange and foreign ships coming up to shore, weirdos doing magic... magic. I thought that crap as just fantasy!" He turns and points out into the fog, "And some berk out there keeps saying the same thing over and over. Woo Dan! Whatever the hell that's supposed to mean. As if this creepy ass fog wasn't enough!"

An arrow comes out of the fog and sticks to the wall a few feet away, luckily the wall is crenelated, or someone would have been ventilated, followed shortly by cauterized. "What in the name of Antonius?!"

Cheers are heard from in the water, in a strange and harsh tongue. Off on the side the giant jumped in, shouts are heard, followed by a loud crack, then the groaning of wood... then a splash, followed by the quieter noises of men abandoning ship.

((If you'd been a warrior it would be a mage, if you had been a mage it would be a holy type, if you had been a holy type, it would be a rogue. And each one plays out differently, with one NPC escapee per party member.))

There are what appear to be ventilation ducts built into the walls at regular intervals, presumably to prevent the air from becoming stagnant within the interior, while also assisting in maintaining a regular temperature.

A number of doors line the hall. A circular stairwell leading both upwards and down can be seen just inside from the wall.

Once he's inside and seems to have some privacy he'll ask his invisible companion - in part as a way to find out if she's still with him - "Do you have any ideas on what to do at this point?"

If there's no reply, he'll try some of the doors to see if they open.

"Try to make it to the landing, perhaps? Once we're off of this rock we don't have to worry about whatever else is going on. Besides, I think that will likely be the safest area with the highest concentration of guards... And I can't remain invisible much longer for today."

kinem
2016-10-15, 07:13 PM
"Hmm. Having a lot of guards around sounds like danger to me. When you become visible I can say I'm taking you somewhere, but that won't hold much water if we're not on the move.

I don't know who the attackers in the ships are, and neither do the guards it seems. Maybe they'll be friendly to us, maybe not.

Still, I guess heading downstairs and trying to find out more is better than waiting around to be found."

He'll head downstairs unless she has more to add.

"Oh, this and that... I'm a sorceress, assuming you know what that is... I specialized in theft, and escape." She smirks. "When you can cast spells silently without moving and with no need for materials it tends to confuse others if your manacles just seemingly open on their own. I can probably do a few things in a fight, but please don't expect too much, m'kay? I can go invisible again, but it won't last any longer than the last one... maybe ten minutes? Ralasha

The stairs proceed down several floors, you see stone walls, and hear the surf. You appear to be beneath the water's surface. The footsteps stopped following you some time ago.

Ralasha
2016-10-24, 11:23 PM
You move back a short ways to where you last heard her, and see a window looking towards the far shore. The dock appears to be set upon a landing just outside, the fog is slowly spreading in this direction, though you appear to be ahead of it for the moment.

The door on the interior of the landing opens, and stays the way, a short knock on the door alerts you, and turning you see no one standing there, though there is a curved corridor. "Perhaps this way?"

kinem
2016-10-26, 07:24 PM
"Perhaps." Ron heads out that way.

Ralasha
2016-10-26, 07:36 PM
The hall you enter appears to be all of one piece of stone, and far older the halls above.

A mixture of red, white, and black marble seem randomly disbursed until one notices the delicate golden hued tracings seemingly naturally formed, making symbols and patterns that cause your mind to feel swollen, as though some hidden knowledge were waiting there to engulf your psyche.

They shift and swirl slightly to your eyes, though you know they cannot and are not doing so. Something arcane is at work here, and obviously quite ancient.

You notice a small piece of paper on the floor, glimmering slightly as though to attract your attention. As you read the words it says, 'go left'. the peice of paper fades almost immediately upon being read.

There appears to be a skiff, a man in robes stands staring at the fog and mumbling to himself amidst the soldiers. Those other than he appear nervous.

ooc: She is still with you... you think.

Other note: I apologize for any stuttering apparent in the narrative. I am trying to mentally overcome a hurdle at the moment presented by the decrease in party size. I think I have it puzzled out though.

IC: The fog finally begins to dissipate as you make your way outside, unlike natural fog however it seems to shrink inwards rather than boil away in the sunlight. From within the fog you hear an unnaturally clear voice raising an incantation. At odds with all probable logic it seems to call out to a variety of draconic deities, Bahamut and his allies, followed by Ao, then Tiamat and hers. The final distinguishable title called sounds similar to jore'goo'mahn le'vee'ethan. On the second chant the bay begins to bear slightly larger waves than it had, small crests appearing along the shore of the island.

The man in robes appears highly startled, and begins hurrying in your direction, towards the entrance to the fortress.

OOC:

The man talks as he approaches. "They appear to be calling upon 'the Leviathans'. Its very exciting, though i would rather be watching from a distance." He looks back at the fog. "A ritual, i think. I'm the only mage i'm aware of in this area, and i'm only capable of first circle magic. Did you know someone is following you?"

kinem
2016-11-06, 05:47 PM

Ralasha
2016-11-08, 06:22 AM
He continues walking through the entrance, he appears more excited than nervous, like a wizard in a library or s child in their first candy store, his words and demeanor are energetic, spritely, and full of excitement; they come out in a rush, "I've no idea at all, really. The Leviathan is or are only referenced on occasion and only in a select few of the scraps recovered from either during or before The Gloom. Even then the materials are quite badly damaged. Though my understanding is The Leviathan is or are something akin to a planar anchor. Like living a living embodiment of some elemental or primal force. I've never seen a Halfling before, this is all very exciting!" (If you've ever seen someone geeking out, this is that. He's a true intellectual with an unending thirst for any and all knowledge, and he's seeing things that to his knowledge no one has seen in a very very long time.)

kinem
2016-11-10, 01:39 PM
Ron tells him "Yes, it's exciting. As is much else right now! Do you know who was casting the spell? I mean, is he with the invaders who sailed here? And, who are they?"

Ralasha
2016-11-11, 05:14 AM
"How should I know?"

He hurries back the way you came towards the wall protecting the courtyard. "What I do know, is that whatever spell created that fog is no longer being sustained, but the fog remains. And the amount of magic coming off of the water outside is ridiculous. It's no summoning ritual though, I can tell you that much. Did you know most of these backwater inbred imbeciles don't even believe in magic? When I use it they assume it's all mist and mirror, or parlor tricks!"

The castle is hit by a tremor. "Well! That's also exciting! I wonder what spell that was... If only I had spent more of my youth delving into tombs, rather than in libraries with bits and pieces and tiny scraps having to be scraped together to learn the basics of the arcane arts... Stupid savages."

"Even in my days the Leviathans were only summoned once. It was considered idiocy, foolishness in the supreme. This ritual spell appears to be summoning only one. The Leviathans summoned together destroyed nearly an entire archipelago, a ring of islands, not a small ring either. A pity, they had some of the most amazing foods there, and some wonderful coral jewelry. It would probably be safest to go out, get in the boat, and flee, rather than remain here. Though I cannot guarantee we would get very far for so long as that individual outside is around to summon it again."

Where do you attempt to hide?

"I hadn't thought of that." The scholar is apparently tagging along. (I rolled his reaction... He followed.) "That would mean... Ah, I see, a sphere of magic I am unfamiliar with, which affects the mind."

Another voice a bit further ahead, coming from a bit farther down, with no one noticeably there... "Unless you're going to make us legitimate passengers, could you please be silent before we're caught?"

Ralasha
2016-12-14, 07:28 PM
"I'm afraid I cannot be much in the way of assistance in that regard. I spend the majority of my time with my nose in books." he clears his throat with slight embarrassment. "Let us see... Geography... You have the mountains which stretch roughly north to south, curving in one direction, towards the sea, to the north, and in the other to the south where it forks. Along the middle of the mountain chain in either direction is a roughly flat surface often used as a highway, because the peaks to either side grant better shelter against whatever inclement weather comes from either the plains or the sea... You can huddle against a rock to shelter from wind, but you cannot huddle against grass to stave the rain... There are... three passes from one side to the other I believe, one to the south near the fork, one a few dozen miles north of the fork, and one a few dozen miles north of the city.

To the south nestled within the fork is Camuldinium, Beyond the mountains, directly is a moor. Just to the south of this, slightly beyond the reach of the mountains are the Bierwoods, Towards this side of the island from those woods are some rocky shores, and rolling plains which are home to many farms.

To the north of the mountains chain, and surrounding a large portion of said mountains are the uninhabited regions."

He stops speaking, shakes his head to clear the mental imagery at work in his description. "Politically... I haven't the foggiest. Communications are not what they once were, most of the cities and forts have had to pull their patrols in a bit more tightly in order to avoid loosing men. Gilchester to the south apparently has taken a rather... odd outlook on the 'adventuring community' and endorses their actions... which appear to accomplish little or nothing. This city here appears to detain most of those types for their own safety, the capital mostly just ignores them."

kinem
2016-12-15, 07:44 PM
"Thanks. It sounds like Gilchester or the capital would be good places to head to, then. You may not see yourself as an adventurer, but if you want to learn more magic, you would do well to hang around them, seeing how far local knowledge about it has fallen. I'm Ron, by the way."

He looks for a crewman who seems to have a moment to talk. If he finds one he says "Hello. I'm Ron. Thanks for the ride. Where are we going?"

Ralasha
2016-12-15, 11:27 PM
"No... I mean the people from this day that try to act like some folks out of legend. There's just one particular issue.

In my experiments and examinations, I have noted a rather distinct lack in any innate magic in most of the population. Which leads me to a rather peculiar hypothesis. The minds and bodies which allowed such herculean feats of body and mind in legend... are for the majority of the modern population... unobtainable.

I myself am hardly an exception, as I have hardly been able to scratch the surface of the potential of the arcane arts. The innate magical component is, within myself, I therefor believe, insufficient. I could no more lift rocks until able to hurl boulders, than any other man is likely able to gain such profound understanding of the fundamental laws of the universe as to toy with time like a plaything... Yet Hasloth or Anarliar are two such mythical examples of individuals purportedly capable of such feats. Hasloth, of such supreme physical might, that he is said to have been capable of walking through wrought iron gates as though out for a morning stroll, and Anarliar, supposedly capable of bending time to such an extent as to be capable of occupying two individual places simultaneously.

The issue at play is that flesh is not able to sustain such forces without incurring severe damage, and the mind is incapable of supporting such a vast and expansive knowledge base. A Hasloth born today would likely powder his own bones when walking, and an Anarliar would most likely be little better than myself. The component which would allow such feats, being unknown to my person, is therefor referred to, and theorized to be, by my person... a distinct and differentiating lack of innate magical potential when compared to ages past."

The sailor grunts "Shore. And way from that fog." He doesn't stop though.

A scream is heard, and a man-thing goes hurling out from within the fog. Loud laughter is heard, followed by the cracking of wood.

kinem
2016-12-17, 01:21 PM
Ron tells the scholar "I don't know why things changed, if they did, but it seems they are changing still. But answers, if any, are out there ... not in your books. Hey ... Your name?"

But soon he has other things to deal with. If it appears that the ship is being boarded by hostiles, he draws his swords and prepares to help repel the attackers.

Ralasha
2016-12-17, 07:13 PM
"My name? It is Garrick." he watches the man sail through the air into the water, from the fog. He sighs, "Hurling boulders... Or in this case men. Might that be one of your comrades hurling them about like so many pebbles?"

kinem
2016-12-18, 09:45 PM
Ron relaxes a bit as it seems the ship is not under attack, at least for the moment.

"Not at all, my only comrades are the people on this ship."

Ralasha
2016-12-19, 12:34 AM
"Well, I suppose the individual may be an aberration... As I was saying,"

He turns and watches as the ship begins moving towards the coast proper.

"The island, while somewhat larger than the average, is not quite continental to my understanding. It is instead three or four areas of disparity in geological makeup. Plains in the larger southern region, rolling hill to the west of the mountains. To the north of the mountains are a series of well-worn canyons, though oddly somewhat... dry-ish... It has few rivers but many small lakes, mostly composed of fresh water. Along the borders of the southern perimeter of the island, the shores are primarily composed of tall and rather sheer cliffs, though I suppose that is true of it's entirety. It has several peninsulas. Along the edges of the plains are the... majority of the 'wetlands' as some would call them. Mires and Bogs are the term I prefer. There are some among the hills to the west also. Rivers are not scarce here, nor were trees at one time, from what I have seen of relatively ancient maps. The oldest of which appears to show the land as nearly entirely forested, though I do not presume too much upon it's accuracy. As to from whence the water in the rivers comes... Mainly from springs... but I suppose I am now moving at least slightly off of the topic."

The chanting stops a moment, and another scream is heard, followed by another crash... the chanting resumes, though it now sounds slightly hurried. The water begins to churn.

If you look, you will notice the men on the walls are now firing into the wisps that remain of the once nigh impenetrable fog.

You see many low-lying boats of a medium-length and shallow design, with strangely designed hulls. Each has two masts, and a string a circular shields along the sides for deflecting missiles, which they are doing an adequate job of.

Aboard the ships are slightly larger than normal human(?) men and women in hides, chain or scale armor, some with a few pieces of plate armor here or there.

Each carries a shield, a sword, spear and an axe. The swords and axes appear slightly larger than most would be comfortable with, while the spears appear designed both for stopping a charge, and for being thrown.

Men in robes are found aboard each vessel. One to each ship. These must be the men chanting, though there are only seven of them left.

The remains of three vessels are slowly sinking, while men swim out from them towards the other ships.

One man, a Goliath by the look of him, is climbing yet another, his body is peppered in cuts. He is armored in Chainmail of an odd black coloration (Adamantine). Though the armor appears to more closely resemble a vest, and leggings which cover his upper legs alone. His fore-arms are girded with bracers, and his lower legs are concealed beneath sabatons and greaves.

He has very short black hair (almost like a shaved head), and pebbly skin. His fingers dig into the hull for purchase.

(Hardness 8, for wood, so... roll 1d20 strength check (to hold on as you hit the side of the ship)... Then unarmed attack damage (damage must beat hardness), then a climb check... and you're climbing a wooden vessel...)

The Goliath makes it onto the deck, crouching low, and as the crew begin fishing people out of the water the Goliath makes his (not-so) subtle way over to the mast, and begins pulling on it.

You hear a loud groan coming from the ship in question, followed by a loud crack as the mast splinters. One of the crew rush up to him, only to be struck with a section of the deck that came up from the shifting of the mast's weight, as the Goliath uses it as a handy weapon. The then begins to run for the side of the boat nearest the next. A few arrows strike him, but fail to penetrate deeply enough to remain in his hide.

Terrorists are bringing an atomic bomb into your hotel, you decide to go outside and walk in the other direction... One man is fighting to stop them.

Fast Forward it is!

The boat makes it approximately halfway across the bay when you notice the churning has stopped. The water becomes unnaturally still, the wind dies, and you notice that any birds that may once have been nearby have long since vanished.

Ahead of the boat, towards the shore, a large serpentine tail rises from the waves, crashing upon the town, a roar is heard from the direction of the fortress, and there you see a monstrously huge head, like that of some cross of snake, dragon and eel of unimaginable proportions, rise from the depths on the other side of the smaller island, nearly matching the fortress in size. It strikes the fortress, and great waves issue forth from the impact. The tail, meanwhile behind you, has swept the city from the surface into the waters. Screams can be heard, cries for help. The boats seen fleeing are quickly crushed beneath the bulk of it's singular, finned appendage.

What boats remain of the invading force have left some time ago, on towards to their next target.

The serpent then turns it's gaze on you, and you sense a malicious, malevolent, and sadistic glee, The last thing you notice, is the sudden absence of sunlight, as the tip of the tail strikes you vessel, crushing you against the water with such awesome force, as to have been a mountain, with you standing astride another.

The sailor is standing, where-ever this is. The one that winked. Staring at you balefully. "What good is a temple if you cannot steal it's trinkets?"

I didn't have any other option. Ron didn't catch sight of whoever was doing the summoning until he was already on a boat heading away, and he's not much of a swimmer (+0) for rough water. It seems highly unlikely that he could have taken out the 7 casters and their guards singlehandedly. Also he didn't know what the spell would really do, or whether the fortress prison he escaped from was any more of a good or evil force than the raiders. Even if he could have convinced the crew to turn back and fight, which seems rather unlikely, he had no reason to think it would amount to anything other than making them die needlessly.

Ron looks at the 'sailor'. "Some would find another use for it, I'm sure.

That was the second time I ... died. Who are you?"

I don't do 'impossible, no win situations' excepting in games where that is the point... such as a zombie apocalypse rpg, or Call of Cthulu. Please do note however, that I allow cleverness and 'outside of the box' (the box being the rules) approaches to solutions. Find oil, soak your clothes, buoyancy. Waterskins filled with only air, buoyancy. Options always exist. This somehow seems to frustrate my players endlessly. Because it is applicable to any and all situations. If you cannot see where someone is, this does not mean you cannot locate them. Your eyes are the most misleading of your senses in reality. They are also the most depended upon, by most, for little reason. It takes only a little training of ones self to hone the others into useful tools, and unfortunately time consuming, but rewarding task. If one learns to listen, you can hear a car coming from behind you, without needing to look. Tires on pavement are very loud, you just grow used to the noise, and learn to tune it out.

His baleful stare turns to a lopsided grin rather swiftly. "Watching that was entertaining. Though I hadn't expected anyone to remember that incantation. I suppose the joke was on me... and you... and everybody else obviously. Of course, the muscle-headed fool couldn't be bothered to assist his own selected champion. Oh no, he must do or die by his own merits. Did a fair job though... You know, before he fell unconscious, and was thrown overboard."

"Me? I'm the reason you're... here. The reason you got out of that prison. You can call me Ol' Damar. At least until you get the joke... Which I suppose will also explain the reason. Let us say... for frame of reference... I am the Champion of Tricks, Jokes, and 'finding things' of your own, in other people's pockets." He giggles, a sound nobody sane should ever make. "And you, you are a warrior, and a thief, and a sneak, and a liar, and a failure. How many people have 'died twice'? Especially so quickly?" He shakes his head, "Shame" He starts wagging a finger at you, "For shame!" He giggles again.

"How about a riddle? I am worshiped by all, but have no temple, without me you are dead, with me you are vulnerable. What am I?"

Find oil, soak your clothes, buoyancy.

What makes you think that would work? Because oil is slightly (8%) lighter than water? The effect would be negligible at best. You'd be better off taking your clothing and gear off, retaining only what you need for modesty. (Which still would not give you a swim bonus.) The only real effect would be that it's an easily smell-able way to make yourself more vulnerable to fire.

Waterskins filled with only air, buoyancy.

That might work if you had them and could rig it properly. Even if he didn't have to worry about going underwater though, Ron had no reason to suspect that he could win the fight, no reason to be motivated to try it, and no reason to suspect that the boat might not make it away if the raider's boats could.

Options always exist. This somehow seems to frustrate my players endlessly. Because it is applicable to any and all situations.

Options that would only work by DM fiat, but which would not logically work or would not work with any other DM, are not options a player should take.

In fact I did try to take an option - running away - that was apparently not what you had in mind, and by DM fiat it didn't work. It's a strange railroad that you run, with invisible tracks that would require far-fetched actions to stay on, and dire consequences if a player should stray off of them.

If your players always end up frustrated, might I suggest adjusting your modus operandi until both you and your players are not-frustrated?

If you cannot see where someone is, this does not mean you cannot locate them.

Perception checks include both sight and sound. I roll; you tell me what the PC perceives. He neither saw the casters nor heard them well enough to locate them (which would be highly implausible anyway if he had), until the boat was heading away.
Ron stares at the man for a moment. "So you are ... a trickster god, perhaps? Wow. Huh.

Hmm. I would have to say, life. Not exactly worshipped, but certainly desired by all."

Time for a fun experiment. Take a cloth, stitch it snugly shut, soak it in oil until completely saturated, It does not grant perfect flotation, but the oiled cloth will resist water saturation.

Indeed, I suppose, one seeing a longboat, not knowing what such a thing was, would not having any reason to suspect that a square bowed vessel would be incapable of moving as swiftly.

Options that would only work by DM fiat, but which would not logically work or would not work with any other DM, are not options a player should take.

It is hardly as though those would be the only options. You are missing the point, I think.

It's a strange railroad that you run, with invisible tracks that would require far-fetched actions to stay on, and dire consequences if a player should stray off of them.

It was not by DM Fiat, The vessel was heading to the Coastal town, which without the ritual being interrupted would destroy it. Remember these things are scripted?

If your players always end up frustrated, might I suggest adjusting your modus operandi until both you and your players are not-frustrated?

Certainly, the next time one of my players finds themselves trapped in a locked cell, with magical items available, and they attempt using supposedly nigh-indestructible materials (read: magical items) to dig, chisel, or shave their way out, I shall say 'Nay, for that which thou attempt to use is no proper tool.' This would be better than going 'You manage to wedge the door slightly ajar, by using your bracer as a fulcrum.'? If you had attempted to run in a different direction, you likely would have made it, excepting that someone just summoned a colossal, and malevolent sea serpent.

Perception checks include both sight and sound. I roll; you tell me what the PC perceives. He neither saw the casters nor heard them well enough to locate them (which would be highly implausible anyway if he had), until the boat was heading away.

"Thanks, now I have an answer for that smarmy bas... Um." He snorts, "Now what to do with you? Hmmm?" He leers, "Best get up, or your feet will get waterlogged... well, worse than they are already." He turns and begins walking away from the docks, fading into the heat-haze of the fires still burning in what remains of the town, from one source or another.

You find yourself on a stone ramp, once used for dry-dock. Though... most likely no longer. Your legs are still beneath the surface of the water, which is lapping across your waist.

Stitched shut? Perhaps, but that has little to do with soaking your clothes. Perhaps you should try the latter.

Indeed, I suppose, one seeing a longboat, not knowing what such a thing was, would not having any reason to suspect that a square bowed vessel would be incapable of moving as swiftly.

You didn't say any more than that the hulls were oddly shaped. Besides, our boat had a head start.

It is hardly as though those would be the only options. You are missing the point, I think.

No, it's you who is missing the point. I think you have the potential to be a really interesting DM, but your current approach doesn't work very well, and your games tend to blow up. That will likely continue until you learn better what works and what doesn't. It's common for DMs to go through such a learning curve, especially if they start out with ideas on what would make the game 'more interesting than usual'. Running published modules can be one way to do it. If running a module with an element of mystery for example, you'd be surprised how often the party misses clues, but good modules tend to have a way to get things moving in the right direction regardless. (And not by an NPC forcing it - that ruins games.) It's not that players are stupid, it's just that things look a lot different from the DM's side of the screen than from the players'.

It was not by DM Fiat, The vessel was heading to the Coastal town, which without the ritual being interrupted would destroy it. Remember these things are scripted?

The fiat (decree) being in place in advance doesn't change anything. Ron had no way of knowing that town would be destroyed; nor was he even told that the vessel was going there when he asked. The fact is, the ship was a trap, but the player had been given no reason to suspect that.

Hmm ... I'm still not sure who or what he is. If indeed a god, would he really need help with a riddle? Or was that a trick on his part?

Ron wades up the ramp and out of the water, while looking around.

Though there is movement at the flanks of your group, since some followed the man, some stayed in the town, and some followed you. It was not an even split, roughly half of the survivors are with you. Some thirty or forty individuals.

The journey up the road is uneventful until you pass a large clearing, after which the road narrows into something more akin to a trail. Up ahead you hear voices, shouting, and hammer on anvil.

Several of the people from the coastal town begin to visibly relax, and chatter becomes more open rather than harsh whispering.

The trail is uneven, but worn semi-smooth as you progress.

The pass itself appears to be nestled between to sheer faces, a precarious position. A minor tremor could have disastrous consequences, though judging by a few of the rocks to either side, while a rare occurrence, it has happened before, the lack of debris at the base of the rail makes more sense as the path widens once more, and you see a wall made of odds and ends rocks, this is probably where all of the detritus went.

There is no readily defensible position apparent aside from an opening in the vertical wall which only reduces accessibility to about three men abreast. No gate, and no readily visible means of attaching one, nor any sign of such attempts can be detected.

A single man, holding a pick as though it were a battle axe stands outside of the way further in. He notices your approach, and shouts something past the wall towards the supposed mining camp.

The man in plate steps forward. "What trouble caused this?"

The mage with him raises an eyebrow.

The Cleric steps towards the crowd and begins looking everyone over for injuries, and casting whatever minor healing spells may be needed.

((Ack, I keep forgetting to give you a level.))

"Strange raiders from the sea summoned a giant dragon, which destroyed the fortress and the town."

ooc: So time to level up?

"The coastal city?" He adopts a pensive expression. "A single monster destroyed the town and fortress? What was it a baboleth, a balor, a dragon perhaps?"

Also yes. Ding. You can continue as a Ninja or multiclass within the rules, while following the rules regarding any specific class restrictions. Note you may now split the gestalt.

"A dragon."

ooc: OK.

Edit: I've edited the character sheet on the 1st page of this thread. I went sorcerer / ninja.

The mans brow beetles. "Troubling." He begins looking surveying surroundings vertically as well as his eyes search into the distance. "I suggest then, that you and your companions continue your... journey with haste, or remain here. The tunnels should provide some form of defense, if not much, should the dragon have followed you." He turns and whistles, "Are you aware there are goblins amongst your troupe?"

kinem

Ron says "I doubt the dragon followed us as it seemed to prefer the ocean, but it's good that you have a place to hide. We will continue on, but thank you for the offer.

Yes, we picked up these goblins along the way. Do you know of them? It seemed better to keep an eye on them then to let them follow us."

Ralasha
2017-05-22, 08:42 PM
"Goblins are always evil. It seems there is little else to know." He shrugs, "Enjoy your journey then. Whence shall you go, south to the capital? North to the Ruins we arose within, or into the Mires and Bogs to the west?"

kinem
2017-05-24, 07:47 PM
Ron says "Perhaps goblins mistreat humans because of reactions like that. I don't know and see no reason to make any assumptions.

South to the capital sounds good to me. What can you tell us of the route ahead?"

Ralasha
2017-05-25, 02:22 PM
"Perhaps dragons eat villagers because of their lack of respect. I think it more likely we just taste good."

kinem

"I'll not help you test that theory. The route, please?" Ron says.

Ralasha

He tells you how to reach the capital, or an approximation of it.

"Do yourself a favor if you are insistent in taking the gobs with you. Don't sleep." He sighs, shakes his head, and moves back into the town, followed by what is apparently his party... the others that came out with him.

The goblins rapidly begin speaking to each other in their natural language.

Some of the vagrants tagging along with you shuffle nervously.

Ron says "Thanks for the directions.

Would you have me slay the goblins? They have given me no provocation. But yes, we will set watches. We have a large enough group to have more than one watcher at a time.

Well, onward."

When the group is underway Ron tells the goblins "As you see, I am giving you a chance here to be peaceful neighbors. If you violate that trust, you will not only have to die, you will set back your entire race by proving the accusations true. If you can't handle it, leave us now while you can."

There seem to be fewer people here than before. Less than a handful of them, but the numbers have reduced.

You notice the goblins faces are slightly smeared with a viscous liquid. By berries or something (you hope).

kinem

Ron casts mage armor on himself.

"Hold on. You, come this way."

Ron separates the goblins from the others, and also beckons those others that he knows can fight towards him.

He then tests the liquid on one of the goblins' faces, by taste if need be.

If it is blood he punches the goblin and declares "That's blood on their faces and some of us are missing. They have betrayed us already and you know what that means."

It (the blood) appears to be not human.

Well, that's different. But I still need to find out what's going on.

Ron asks the goblin "That blood on your face. What is it from?"

He tells everyone "We need to do a head count. I think we lost a few. Anyone know where they might be?"

Ralasha

The goblins shrugs "We catch rats. Tasty rats, the flesh so soft, the screams so sweet, the bones that crunch, the meat to eat." He smacks his lips, seemingly unaware of how utterly horrifyingly psychotic he just sounded, almost singing about the terror and pain of the animal he devoured... apparently alive.

The others look around slowly. (city-folk... No tracking skill, no idea how to go about it... aside from the hunters... Who are missing.)

The two primary NPCS however, are doing something entirely different... Casting spells.

The human mage responds: "They live..." He looks at the halfling who responds, "They are in no danger."

"Gone hunting, I suppose. From now on we have to be more careful. There will be danger ahead, most likely."

Ron begins to get a head count of who is present, other than the hunters. He breaks it down by gender, race, and other notable characteristics.

Ralasha
2017-06-28, 04:02 PM
14 males 17 females: human adults.
1 female Halfling Sorceress.
1 male human Wizard, aged.
7 children, human.
12 teenagers 7 male, 5 female, human.

Making careful note of the head count, Ron talks to the others while they wait for the hunters to return.

"So ... any of you ever visit the capital before?"

Ralasha
2017-07-16, 11:38 PM
First of all, please accept my apologies for the delay. Working 14 hour days can be rather tiring. 15 if one includes the drive to and from as work.

And now for something completely different:

The congregated individuals look at each other. The wizard nods, "Well, yes. I was at one time one of the advisers to a previous ruler... Though, aside from my 'replacement', I'm afraid I am unlikely to know anyone there. The Arcane arts are treated rather dismissively after all." He quirks a brow, "Why do you ask?"

kinem
2017-08-11, 07:23 PM
Ron replies "Because we're headed that way, anything you can tell us might come in handy. So tell us, what is the capital like, what's on the way, who rules it, things like that ... anything that might be good to know."

((WB))

He nods slowly. "It is a typical large city. Maybe a thousand inhabitants, an ancient crumbling stone wall towards the interior, the market taking up the area around the wall... It is up against a mountain... There is a river running through it down the mountain. The interior is separated into districts. It has several inns which cater primarily to merchants... It is the seat of the government. The Current Monarch lives there. The edges of the city are slums, and it is surrounded by farmlamds. Is there anything specific?"

(The global population is estimated at around 380 millions)

"We are going to need food, jobs, housing. Any ideas on the best way to do that?"

"I am afraid that other than general knowledge on the Kingdom, it's larger towns, culture, and people of importance, I am most likelyy quite ignorant. I did not spend much time learning of economics. Nor of the means of average men and women. I had more pressing concerns." (He rolled a 1.)

The halfling speaks, "It might be best if we just set camp? The hunters may be gone for some time, and when theu return some rest may be welcome, as I am sure whatever sustenance they bring will also prove to be... Welcome that is. My ration bag will only feed me and a child."

The commoners are currently gabbing as they wait. These are city folk. The Elderly Wizard casts a spell bringing a hut into existence, but it only fits 8.
