My half-orc fighter is getting a magical +2 Giantslayer Greatsword repaired/reforged after it was damaged, and he's having an engraving written on the sword in Orcish. Our campaign is centered around fixing the cycle of Ragnarok and fighting frost-giants, and I'm wondering what you guys think I should put on it/name it. Any interesting ideas?

I like the idea of naming it after a Nordic weapon, are there any that specifically have to do with killing Giants?

Jotunmorder? Not exactly a traditional name from the sagas that I'm aware of, but direct and to the point: "giant murderer".

Mjolnir comes to mind.

Using a crude Old Norse translation Dursbani roughly means Giant Death.

In modern Swedish the following means Giant Butcher/Slaughterer: Jätte-slaktare

In Finnish we have Jättiläisentappaja or Giant-slayer.

Danish gives us Kćmpe-morder: Giant-killer, or more appropriately Giant-murderer

And we've got: Jotunn-hamar as Giant-hammer.

Jotunn-hamar as Giant-hammer.

I feel like I've heard this one before, but it's awesome regardless.

Catalan: Matagegants
Punjabi: Kapanī kātala
Frisian: Reus Moardner
Corsican: Arma di Giganti
Dutch: Reus Slachter
Maori: ōka Rapa

I was worried some would end up in the wrong declension. Or Google translate would use giant as a verb, rather than a noun.

Also, consider making the sword intelligent - then you can ask for its input on the matter.

That works better if the character's name is Jim.

I agree with this. There isn't a lot of reason you'd want a weapon to talk back to you.

If I was making an object to be smart and give me help, I'd make it something like a ring, a glove, or a headband that I can keep on my person whenever I need it. I wouldn't want something like a weapon that's already conspicuous, bulky, and can't be taken with me everywhere. I'm not going to walk into a date, a final exam, or a job interview with my +2 intelligent rifle, that just sends the wrong message even if it does give me some good advice.

It's the main reason I always include Minsc in my party! That, and Boo is just too cute. (Go for the eyes, Boo! Go for the eyes!)

That being said, I also have never introduced an intelligent, speaking, weapon, either. I've introduced one with empathy, but that's it. Although I am looking forward to that character being given another magic sword, and seeing how the intelligent one reacts to being reduced to Second Fiddle...

I've only once included a talking weapon....and that is because one PC was delusional and thought his sword spoke to him, he called her Nina.

Boy, if you can't appreciate the chilling depth of Gurthang as a character, you and I are living on two different planes of existence.

"Hail Gurthang! No lord or loyalty
dost thou know, save the hand that wieldeth thee.
From no blood wilt thou shrink.
Wilt thou therefore take Túrin Turambar,
wilt thou slay me swiftly?"

"Yea, I will drink thy blood gladly, that so I may forget the blood of Beleg my master, and the blood of Brandir slain unjustly. I will slay thee swiftly."

PS. I unsurprisingly second Gromvras (Giant slayer in orcish) or Druana (Dreadblade).

I have always had fond memories of White Plume Crater Mountain and once my players do the 5e temple of elemental evil, I'll do a 5e conversion of that module as well. Blackrazor, Wave, and Whelm were as much members of the party as any one of us. In fact, I think they outlived quite a few of us.
