View Full Version : Let's build a character together - a 5E interactive game - take 8

Let's try and build a 5E character together ... again! For this game, a special plot-twist is in effect:

Once per game, one poster gets to announce a house rule. The house rule must satisfy the following conditions:
- It must be of reasonable nature, one that a reasonable gaming group might actually accept.
- It must actually pertain to the character. Don't choose "halflings have darkvision" when the character is an elf, for example. Also, don't choose a houserule pertaining to a certain class unless that class was actually chosen for the character, etc.
- The houserule post doesn't count as one of the 30 posts enumerated below.

With that in mind, let's go.

Poster #1 will choose Race, and any sub-race if applicable.
#2: Alignment
#3: Background, and alternate background feature, if applicable.
#4: Personality Trait
#5: Ideal
#6: Bond
#7: Flaw
#8: Name and gender
#9: Ability score assignment - use the 15/14/13/12/10/8 array, apply racial bonuses
#10: Racial choices (eg. if race is Variant Human, choose feat, if race is Half-Elf chose bonus skills, if High Elf choose a Cantrip, etc); if race doesn't allow optional choices, skip this step.
#11: Class at 1st level, and any class-related choices (eg. known spells for Sorcerer, fighting style for fighter, etc)
#12: Class at 2nd level, and any class-related choices
...
#30: Class at 20th level, and any class-related choices
And, of course, any time during that time, any *one* poster may announce a house-rule!

All choices must be legal. For this game, let's keep it to all official WotC material except UA. Traits, Ideals, Bonds and Flaws can be made up, using PHB guidelines. You may not have an Ideal that's opposed to your Alignment.

The three-post rule applies (don't post unless at least 3 people posted since your previous post)

Let me start.

Blink, Lightning Bolt

HOUSE RULE PROPOSAL: A wizard can choose to become a generalist wizard and pick their arcane tradition features from different schools each time. They cannot choose the same arcane tradition for two features. This comes at a cost however as they cannot prepare two spells of the same school of magic at the same spell level on any given day.

If the next person agrees with this we'll use it. Otherwise I'll cross it out and leave the houserule for someone else.

I'm against this houserule. This guy is not a generalist, but a illusionist at his heart.

#20 Wizard 6

Hypnotic Pattern, Major Image

Proposed House Rule: spellcasters can forgo concentration requirements by casting a spell two slot levels higher than normal. When up-cast in this manner, spells do not gain any other benefits normally associated with doing so. For this purpose, cantrips count as a level 0 spell.

(just a note: if we're going mainly Wiz here, we really really want the illusionist 14th level archetype ability. So much goodness to be had there. Do as you will as usual, just saying)
