After seeing how ridiculously top-heavy half-ogres are, I've decided I want one on the team of one of the bosses in my campaign.

I envision him as a barbarian punching things to a pulp with a pair of metal gauntlets.

What is the best way to make it work, mechanically? he doesn't really have the dex for TWF feat chain, and I'm concerned about gimping his damage.

Which system are you using?

If you can squeeze a few more LA onto it, obah blessed gives a second pair of hands and free multi attack. Its from a Dungeon mag though.

Which CR should we aiming for?
What's the level(s) of the party?

Just so we are clear... are you sure you don't want a Dragonborn Arctic Half-Minotaur Half-Ogre Water Orc? 'Cause that seems like the thing you actually want...

In case that isn't true, how about going the charging fighter route? Pounce-Barbarian and then go Fighter for feats?

Nah, one of the other battles in this arc already has a minotaur frenzied berserker with an adamantine greataxe of mighty cleaving.

I'm just looking for a way to turn this

into this

I want him somewhere around level 16-17. He's not the main threat in the room, so I don't need him to be super deadly - I just want him not to suck.

Are there any gauntlets that increase efective 'size' of fists for the purpose of damage?

I guess a Monks Belt increases unarmed damage pretty well. Your half-ogre should probably go into Fist of the Forest (and MAYBE into Initiate of the Draconic Mysteries). Needless to say, you'll be feat starved and want fighter levels anyway. Also, add Empty Hand Mastery, because I think it increases every single die, though I could be wrong about that.

Strongarm gauntlets or bracers in the MIC boost wieldable weapon size by one.

Your main damage output is (almost) never going to come from the base weapon damage; it will come from ability scores (strength), power attack (and related feats), or special abilities (Elder Mountain Hammer!).

Give him a club and have someone cast the Druid 2 spell that gives it +10 damage, and then cast Greater Might Wallop on it.... that'll help too. Maybe a custom scabbard that does it twice/day?

i always advocate stacking rage-like abilities with rage (berserk is my all time favorite one level dip) and get things like steadfast determination for con to will saves, mad foam rager to screw with your players for one last hurrah, fist of the forest is useful in the con to AC and i would suggest a couple fighter levels for the prereqs. I got away with taking feat variant rogue for more silliness at later levels for 2 levels for a very minimal loss to BAB (use fractional rules).

On a similar build i was trying to get primeval under my belt, allows you to transform into a huge dire ape (which arguably can carry a weapon...tree sized great club? ok!!) and was gonna reflavor it as bruce banner being really really angy, for a crapload of + to STR

best of luck to ya!

You could always pull the spiked chain cheese ball.

There's a class called Thrall to Kostchtchie in Dragon mag #345. If you don't mind you half-ogre worshiping the demon prince of frost giants, then the 10 level class gives a size increase, cold resistance, and a bunch of boosts that to rage.

Potemkin isn't frothing angry, and not all ogres are barbarians or rage, but you may be hard pressed to avoid a barbarian dip for pounce. There's always the infinite punch damage Crusader trick, but that's hard to employ as an encounter against PCs. There's also Warblade for maneuvers that substitute for or add to your regular gauntlet damage.

I would suggest that your half-ogre pick up some gauntlets with triple weapon capsule retainers (Complete Adventurer). He could stock them up with spellvials of Explosive Pack (Secrets of Sarlona) and like Burning Hands or something actually good at this level. Alchemist Savants (Magic of Eberron) can make spellvials, so you could add that to the encounter, although the Savant hardly needs to do anything combat wise. If that's a bit of a stretch to you, or too expensive for the 10d6 explosives, then just pack them with Quickflame. Just realize that Explosive Pack spellvials will hurt Potemkin too (but he can punch explosions). A couple of +1 Flaming Burst gauntlets will also serve as fire fists if you're not into looking at so many books.

Ok, so now he's got fiery/explosive fists. Now let's get him buff. Take a look at my sig for a bunch of alchemical items which are guaranteed to have him fightin' like a champ out there. Of note are Tarmak Warpaint and Bloodspike, Tempo. Does he need to punch through a wall? Well dump out the weapon capsules of explosive pack/alchemist's fire for some Delver Slime. That acid'll tear through a wall right fast. Katakuda drug gives +3 natural armor, which goes well with the warpaint.

Try asking a high-CL wizard to cast Greater Mighty Wallop on your facekissers.

Most probably you know everything already, but here is a quick checklist you can enjoy.

Of course Lion Barbarian from the Complete Champion, plus:
Shock Trooper (https://dndtools.net/feats/complete-warrior--61/shock-trooper--2614/) power attack on AC.
Battle Jump (https://dndtools.net/feats/unapproachable-east--33/battle-jump--187/) double damage if you fall on the adversary and the attack becomes a charge. Ideally you have a way to teleport over the enemy... A ring with Dimension Jumper (http://alcyius.com/dndtools/spells/complete-mage--58/dimension-jumper--778/index.html) would be ideal.
Headlong Rush (http://alcyius.com/dndtools/feats/races-of-faerun--23/headlong-rush--1351/index.html)double damage in charge, but you need Orc blood.
Use a Valorous Weapon for another x2, and don't forget Power Attack, Combat Brute, and Leap Attack.

As a race, why half-Ogre? Go half-Minotaur/half-Orc, and no... it's not uber. If your DM really thinks so, just play a Druid at the same level. Maximize CON and WIS and transform in something powerful.

It's not exactly what you need, but a part of ideas I copied here the Dragoon Guide (http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=7200) may give you pther suggestions.

I am the DM. I'm trying to make an interesting boss encounter, and I'm making characters for his retinue.

You're the DM! Align the stars so he can ready a standard action to use Commetary Collision!! Think of how awesome it would be for the party tank to get rekt as he tries to charge a caster! What if he instead charges Potemkin? A Cross-Counter! (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CrossCounter). The coolest thing that never happens in D&D, and you could be the first!
