View Full Version : Ridiculously high Diplomacy and Intimidate

I found a combination of VMC, feats, traits, and archetypes that can get me to +30 diplomacy and intimidate by level 5, as well as a class feature that lets me take 10 on social skills checks. Is there a point where bonuses to Diplomacy and Intimidate lose their meaning and you just always get what you want?

Yes, the point where the DM tosses the rules out the window and just says "no." :smalltongue:

Sure, but it's higher than that. To truly throw meaning out the window, you really want to be accessing the epic diplomacy rules (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/skills.htm#diplomacy), which is plausible at rather low levels. That means pushing out a 120 or 150, hard but not impossible. Outside of epic, the break point where you no longer need diplomacy is when you can always go from hostile to helpful in a full-round action, even with circumstance penalties. You're close, but you're not quite there.

In the worst situation you could end up with a DC 50 (plus circumstantial modifiers) by trying to convert an Hextor follower to an Heironeus devotee, or when you want to turn an enemy into an intimate. I'd hardly allow such a combo, but you can always use every single extra point in social skills you can get. And with a +30 at level 5, I'd say they'll stop to matter by level 15 or so...

Intimate has a problem there are two types one allows you to get what you want but 1d6 times 10 minutes later they talk trash about you ruin your reputation. Or you get what you want with threat and bad intentions they remember and you drift to evil since you have to do worse each time.

That's why intimidate is the fighter's back-up diplomacy for when the rogue's check fails

I'm judging by your past threads and your reference to "VMC" that you're playing Pathfinder. Be aware that in PF, Diplomacy (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/skills/diplomacy) was severely nerfed in a couple of key ways:

1) There is no epic result (i.e. you cannot get anyone to "Fanatic" even with a +1000 check.) The highest result on the table is "Helpful."

2) You cannot by RAW go higher than a 2 rank increase in a single check. So if an enemy is Hostile to you, the highest you can get them to is Indifferent, and getting them higher will require GM fiat.

3) It is generally ineffective in combat or when combat is imminent, so once an enemy is attacking you or about to attack you it's usually too late.

4) Even if you succeed, the duration is up to the GM, so it might last for a few hours or can be as short as a round or two.

So the answer to your question is no, there is no situation under which it will always get you what you want (unless that's what your GM wants to happen.)

Well, that sucks...

Oh, well.
