Never delved into it much, but Shadows of Isildur (http://www.middle-earth.us/) during college. It was cool because it had a really heavy lore focus. You created a character, background included, and then it had to be approved by the staff, and they were looking for really ground-level characters in the story; you had to earn the right to play movers-and-shakers (like other races, such as Elves, or more important characters in the setting) by showing that you were reliable, and able to contribute quality RP.

I've tried four or five of the more important ones and never got into any much. Two reasons, mainly. They were all really, really grindy for no really visible reason, and it never felt like there was anything to discover that didn't already have 20 players plastered over it.

Honestly, those are my problems with MMOs too.
