Hit dice after long rest

I used to let my group regain all hit dice after a long rest. Now I just found out u regain only half of them. Am I correct that by raw you are only regaining hit dice after reaching lvl 2? Or do you get 1 dice every 2 long rests? Doesn't it seem a bit harsh? Not only for new players who just start to play and need to know how hit dice works but characters seem already quite squishy at lvl 1...
And if so. Do you DM's out there fallow this rule or is it a common house rule to round hit die up?

You regain at least 1 Hit Die when you finish a long rest as per the PHB errata https://media.wizards.com/2016/downl...-Errata-V1.pdf

So the sentence actually now reads in D&D Basics:


Long Rest: At the end of a long rest, a character regains all lost hit points. The character also regains spent Hit Dice, up to a number of dice equal to half of the character’s total number of them (minimum of one die).

You should be level 2 after your first long rest anyway.
