So on an opposed shove role, what happens in a tie?

Attacker: gets 18 (after bonus)
Defender: gets 18 (after bonus)

Does the attacker win, the defender win, or is there something else that happens?

If the results of opposed rolls are equal, nothing changes (meaning defender wins). PHB 174

Huh, I never noticed that rule. I kind of don't like it; I think I'll stick with "whoever had the higher bonus wins ties."

On the one hand that makes sense; on the other I always think of ACs and DCs as things you need to match, not beat, so this rule with opposed roles is kind of an exception.

It could have been done both ways, but I guess we can think of it as the attacker's roll setting up the DC for the defender. There's a precendent for that with saves.

That works very well. Nice extrapolation.

then the two opposing players must fight like apes while the Star Trek fight music blasts out.

Interesting. I tend to use the opposite - whoever rolls higher wins ties. A matter of taste i suppose.

Just remember that it works the other way too.

Attacker successfully grapples Defender.

On Defender's turn, it tries to escape the grapple.

Defender and Attacker both roll 18s.

Defender stays grappled because the status quo remains the same, which is the Defender being Grappled.

I've always run that ties go to highest bonus, highest bonus ties go to PCs.
