Improving basic familiars..

I read in a post somewhere on here about an article in an issue of dragon magazine that discusses the improved familiar feat granting benefits to standard familiars. Anybody have any guesses? I know extra familiar is in issue 280, but I can't find the source of the snippet about improving familiars.

I'm pretty sure with Improved Familiar you can get a celestial/fiendish version of a normal familiar. Is that what you're thinking of?

Also, if you're into Pathfinder there's basically everything from the Familiar Folio, and the Evolved Familiar feat.
