View Full Version : Our Little Adventure I: Yes, I'm Not the First to Make A Thread for This

Our Little Adventure (http://danielscreations.com/ola/) is a webcomic that while inspired by Order of the Stick and also using D&D 3.5 rules(albeit with plenty of homebrewed ones as well), has a more detailed art style and a completely different setting, and is certainly not a carbon copy like several people have wrongly claimed. With over 600 strips nearing 700 at the time of this original post, OLA is a delicious read for anyone who wanted to read more comics in the meta-D&D style of OotS. Yes, I know that there have been threads for this in the past, but you know, thread necromancy is banned.

Oh right, I should tell you about the story without spoiling it, right? Well, the main character and heroine Julie, a Bard, is on a quest to find the pieces of the Magicant, a powerful magical item that grants any and all wishes. Yes, any and all wishes, even ones too great for wish or miracle. Of course it's not just her - her husband Lenny, a multi-class Fighter/Ranger, Julie's bratty little sister Angelika, a Sorceress, and Angelika's sort-of-friend-I-guess Rocky, a Rogue, among other characters who join as the story progresses, are helping her too.

Too bad Angelo Souballo and Brian Souballo, an epic level Cleric/Sorcerer/Mystic Theurge and an epic level Wizard respectively as well as the emperors of the Souballo Empire are looking for it too.(Yes, they're gay, and no, it has absolutely nothing to do with their alignment.) It's a race, with Julie and her party having to find and complete the Magicant, before the Empire or someone else gets it first. Good thing the Empire doesn't know that Julie's party is looking for the Magicant as well... yet.

(Finally a) New Comic

That guy is a Souballo soldier, isn't he?
Well, that is less than ideal.

At least it shouldn't tell the bad guys much more than the general direction our heroes are heading.

But since they know that our heroes are working against them (I think) and that someone is looking for the Magicant- the beam of light Julie's "compass" gives off is pretty visible -they might still be in trouble.

But Jordie and Warrenare really cute together. Even the Emperors agree with that.

I don't remember this guy at all...

He and his partner were the first Empire soldiers Julie's party met. His partner(who was a gish) was killed when Julie accidently shot her in the eye. I forget what else but I do remember that.

You have to like a evil empire that cares this well for its minions.
Maybe our heroes should join. I mean it's not as if those guys have any evil plans, right?:smalltongue:

Yeah, they're even going to try and take care of that demon problem the elves caused! :smallwink:

To be honest, Brian and Angelo, while unmistakeably Evil, do truly care about their loyal servants/employees, and the atrocities they've done seem to be more of a means to an end, an end that has or at least had good intentions. Do they need to be stopped? Yes, of course. Are they good rulers to their subjects, if horrible people to their and their empire's enemies? ...It's not easy to say no, isn't it?

Well, that was impressive.
They figured out who was responsible pretty fast.

On the plus side, if the changed situation gets Julie to actually get on with her quest there's at least one good thing about releasing the demon.

Not really; she didn't tell them because the less people who knew about it, the better, considering the immense power of the Magicant and the potential for abusing it. She might have told Harvey and Warren if they'd be helping in getting the second Magicant piece, but considering what happened the last time she did...

Quizma is the best character.
Even if her appearance related quirk is a bit headache inducing.

And I guess Julie could have phrased that better.
Or those lawful good types could be less touchy about stuff.

New Comic (http://danielscreations.com/ola/comics/ep0684.html)

Now this, this is interesting.

Gives us at least as many questions as it answers.
But tells us a few things about Angelo.
Seems like he could be a pretty descent guy if it wasn't for the demonic possession.
And Emily and her "siblings" aren't based on him but the thing hiding within.

Interesting way that this is different from OOTS is that OLA actually feels like a game, I mean it has stats for all the characters and combat operates more like an actual game rather than following rules of Drama

According to Mr. Rogonandi, part of the reason he started making OLA was to get people interested in the campaign setting of Manjulias.

Huh I wonder if he is going to publish it, cause it is feels very much in the vein of Eberron to me, basic framework of a D&D game but with a very distinct flavor.

I haven't been a big fan of Warren and Jordie's relationship, but their sharing the cape in the desert night was very cute.

Also, Rocky's sunburn seem remeniscent of Belkar's troubles in the desert to anybody else? It might their similar hairstyles.

Oh my, but this looks good. I'm up to page 28, and I love the idea of watching a campaign starting with first level incompetents.

So this comic is based on an actual campaign? Did the artist run it/GM, or who?

Yes and no: it's based on a campaign setting the artist ran with his players, but the story is original.

I strongly suggest joining the forum; he'll be glad to answer your questions. Just note that they moved the forum somewhere along the line. The new and current one is on proboards.

That is a clever idea.
Doubt it will work though.

And yeah, calling a drug lab probably isn't that great a idea if you want the Lawful folks to leave you alone.
But it is a fun way to make them waste their time.

Here's a thread bump to show my appreciation for OLA, which is a fun and intricate, albeit silly, story. It might not be on the level of OotS, but then, there's nothing wrong with being derivative.

For the sake of disclosure: I feel like the author of OLA had a agenda in making the two main villains a gay couple... and yet, he ended up writing one of the most loving and healthy couples in all of D&D fancomics. Storytelling is weird like that. ^_^

Somehow, I forgot about this comic. And of course, my last checkpoint was right at the end of a segment.

http://danielscreations.com/ola/comics/ep0202.html

I love the idea of a wand of jump being used on mine cart. I love the idea of turning a dungeon crawl into a videogame.

And I love the idea that a loop is useful for mining. You have to get to the stuff on the roof somehow.

Politics. Player characters getting involved with politics. There's nothing quite like a minor misunderstanding propagated by a player character, turning into a giant war that will shape your campaign.

Other than Darth and Droids I mean. :-)

The update pace is definitely glacial; unless it's updated in a couple weeks I'm probably going to stop following the comic.
