First thread/post on gitp, although I've read many of the threads in the past. With that in mind, this may be in the wrong section, feel free to direct me to a more appropriate location.

In 3.5 there is the Tome of Battle. Love it or hate it, it was largely used for some interesting builds, cheese, etc... However, one of the things that intrigued me most was how other classes could contribute to your initiator level. So a level 3 Swordsage/4 Fighter was a level 5 initiator and upon gaining another level of swordsage could pick level 3 maneuvers or stances.

Now, for the 5e aspect. In terms of balancing, what would be the effect of allowing magic classes to use non-magic classes in a similar way. For example, a level 2 Wizard/4 Fighter could access third level spells.
