Hi everyone!
I'm currently writing a story, not going to go into much detail about it now, but one of those things that help me write is to have music on for ambiance. Some songs are more helpful than others.

I have 2 songs that are currently helping me get words out:
Tom Waits - Alice (http://youtu.be/aEj-mrwwaxo)
AND
Bruce Springsteen - Point Blank (http://youtu.be/l0DjrXDBJnU)

It would be a lot easier if I knew what I was looking for, but when I try to describe it, it yields no fruit. I'm looking for more songs with an atmosphere as similar to these two as possible, Ideally there would be a Playlist of this kind of music already, but I just want to find more so I can keep a momentum going, any suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Does the rest of the album help? Or other stuff by Waits?
Because if it doesn't, it seems like we will just be randomly throwing out suggestions without much else to go on.
I'm fond of John Cale and something like Dying on the Vine (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTADU0iMnF4) might be up your alley.

My favorite Waits album! For a similar dark loungey/jazzy vibe, maybe some tindersticks (start with "a night in") or some Nick Cave ("Push The Sky Away"). A bit more minimal, and his voice is a love it or hate it thing, but Current 93's Soft Black Stars album is similar. Mojave 3 might fit too, their first, Ask Me Tomorrow is beautiful. This Mortal Coil's Filigree & Shadow is great, but moving in a decidedly gothier direction (and if that's cool with you, black tape for a blue girl might be right up your alley)

Oh, Leonard Cohen. Just about anything, but start with maybe "Everybody Knows", "Famous Blue Raincoat" or "Waiting For The Miracle"

I found Alice by accident, and even though I love songs like Time, Grapefruit Moon, or Gun Street Girl, I don't get as much done with them. I honestly don't know much of his discography, though, and I don't keep the parts I don't like.
It's hard for me to put a label on it because every attempt to Google music like it failed this far . But I describe it as "music for those somber, rainy night music with a little mysteriousness so you can reflect on the longing and melancholy."
...
I'm sorry if I'm not very helpful.

If his music helps me write, or if nothing else feels like quality, I'll probably add it to my collection soon enough.

Thank you for the suggestions!

Lindsey Stirling.

She's alright. Not quite what I'm looking for. Too upbeat. I like it, but I'm not looking to dance, I'm looking to set ambiance.
