I guess this means that at least one of the new snacks survived the intermission onslaught...

Perhaps it was captured and sent to a coffee shop.

Very merciful of Popcorn.

Good SWAT team too, a very painful pun though.

Sirens in horses, SWATS and Julia outsmarting the half-elf? Just perfect :D

Maybe a half-elf is a quater-camel, isn't it? Elan would shout that and think on the traits.

I first laughed out loud at the horses with the lights and sirens and thought that would be the best part of the strip, but then the SWAT team just made it that much better, IMHO a great comic Giant.

EDIT: WOOT! 2nd Page! I r0x0r (or something like that...)

Very merciful of Popcorn. No, the latest strip had a Mocha Latté. The Intermission Strip (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0301.html) had a Soy Latté.

I suspect they're cousins... ;D

Ah, the old SWAT team gag... As seen in Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers episode "Fake Me To Your Leader"...

L.M.A.O! The best comic since the green floaty-mouth thingy! Gotta love the puns, and the old coffee joke. This was just a random comic that was the only good news in this sucky day =D other than the talk like a pirate day, that is.

You know, I was beginning to think the callbacks were getting a little out of hand lately, but the Mocha Latté Rogue's appearance has shown me that they can still cause me to quite literally laugh out loud.

Also, the Swat pun is making my brain bleed. Kudos.

The swat team was awesome :) Roy's sister is spunky and fun as well.

Not a big fan of the horse-lights and the coffee joke, think that's a bit too modern for the series.. it's fine to have jokes about it, like the robot jokes when they were on their way to see the lord. But I don't think such modern things should be drawn.

Now more seriously looks like Julia have a few ranks in escape artist, isn't it a cross class skill for wizards/sorcerers? Is she maybe multiclassing in rogue? Or she just just like playing with ropes in her free time. ;)

Burlew has so many great characters he could start several spin-off comics, and I'd buy those too: The Evil Tales of Nale or Julia's CRAFT even the Azure City gang.

Hey! Am I the only one who wanted Miko Miyazaki to join the group? People seemed to hate her. Oh well more the merier I always say, but the GIANT knows best.

Oh my goodness :D :D

Giant, today I have to give you big credit.
I was always always smiling over the last strips, they had all funny lines though i did find 348 a little letdown due to Elans loveless and forced "I-just-recap-the-secret-without-rhyme-or-rhytm"-gag, but this one invoked such a big laughter with me.

I did laugh about every panel -and sometimes wondered what's in your morning coffee -horses with flashing lights?! ;D But very hilarious. And Julia provided us with great new quote ("not only stylish, practical"). All was over with the Swat team, they made me nearly fell from the chair.(another great gag which will only really work in the original language - they should use OotS as training material in schools).

On a day where I just learned that the planned weekend at a friend's (by the way, dear english natives, do you actually have a female word for "friend" when it's not the girlfriend? Dude, Pal...I seem to know only male versions)
will not happen and there's a seminar this evening I don't want, this strip did really cheer me up.

EDIT: LOL Re-reading I just recognized for the first time that the "weee-ooo" comes from the rookie! :D

On a day where I just learned that the planned weekend at a friend's (by the way, dear english natives, do you actually have a female word for "friend" when it's not the girlfriend? Dude, Pal...I seem to know only male versions)
"Pal" is gender-neutral, and "dude," while male, doesn't imply friendship (cf: Sabine calling Vaarsuvius a dude).

(by the way, dear english natives, do you actually have a female word for "friend" when it's not the girlfriend? Dude, Pal...I seem to know only male versions)

There are no frequently used english words that come to mind that mean "a female friend that is not a romantic interest". The closest thing I can think of is lady-friend, which is most often used for clarification and conveys a meaning more of "female acquaintenance" more than "friend". Another one is gal-pal, but that's pretty cheeky and no one says it unless they're trying to be funny.

If it's absolutely imperative that the person(s) to whom you're speaking know what gender your friend is, say lady-friend. Otherwise, say friend or pal or whatever comes to mind and let your audience worry about it if they think the gender is that important.

The strip has been on a roll recently, but the SWAT team made me laugh more than anything for a while.

And person's comment above that the half-elf only has one pointy ear (hilarious attention to detail) made me realize for the first time that elves are the only ones in the strip with ears. Never saw that before. Didn't Belkar refer to V as "Ears" a few times? Makes even more sense now...

Now, if I were a villain and I were in the comic - I'm happy that I'm not on both counts - I would say to Pompey: "Yeah, because leaving a wizard prisoner ungagged is a really smart thing to do, brain trust." Seriously, Julia should have at least one metamagic feat. All she'd need to have done is study one Still animate object and the ropes would untie themselves for her.

Exceptionally good comic. Composition, flow, and lots of humorous subtlety. Though I would have thought the last panel (being a student) would be dressed as he is. I thought it was the teacher for a moment....then again it is a prep school.

SWAT team... it's been a while since I laughed with that kind of a joke :D

I wouldn't have laughed at the last panel, but I did because the setting hit a certain familiar spot in me. Think about it ; the guy is suddenly confronted with a catastrophic surprise, and instead of panicking or acting on it, he sits there calmly and says "Boy, that can't be worse than that time I/they..." and then the scene instantly changes to a completely different place, for a completely irrelevant to the comic itself scene, in a completely unrealistic and unexpected situation. If that still doesn't ring any bells for you then go watch some Family Guy! ;D ;D ;D

Edit:I just read this thread's page6. I guess I'm not the only guy who caught in on that, right Hydro? 8)

The officer making the siren noise rather reminded me of the scenes in Monty Python and the Holy Grail with the fellow in the king's entourage clicking coconut shells together to simulate horses' hooves.

Oh, but an embarassing typo, methinks: shouldn't it be a "bluff" spell, not a "buff" spell? What would a buff spell do? Turn the enemy beige? Or cause their clothes to spontaneously drop off....

...actually, yeah, I can see where that spell'd come in handy, esp. at a frat party.

When attacking, does an evil living hot cup of coffee go right for the crotch?

"Buff spells" are ones that increase your allies' abilities. They "buff you up".

Too many good things, all of which have already been commented upon. Thanks to those who mentioned the rookie making the siren noise, I totally missed that the first time through.

Is it possible that the soy latte is trying to rescue the mocha latte (in the boss/intern's hand)?

Or perhaps the boss is lactose intolerant, in which case we have a soy mocha latte with an extra shot, the barista's bane!

It was good, but it was averaged compared to what I think is the funniest strip (#7 ThorPrayer). Not to be a negative nancy but it wasn't gut –burstingly as funny like some of your other previous strips (which I don't expect you to always have). I also found your punch-line to be weak.

P.S.

I've noticed everyone is so positive, with repeated sayings of "Best one yet" or "It was hilarious". I decided to actually express my opinion, not that they didn't it's just I'd like to express mine in a more detailed way. Instead of me being positive like the rest, I'll always be negative to every new strip you make. I don't mean that in a bad way either, it's not like I want to mock you. It's just all that positive energy isn't going to make you better as much a negative energy. Sure you'll be encouraged but thousands of positive comments wont challenge you, improve your slight mistakes. Positive posts are to be expected no matter what you put your time into.

A serious opinion about your newest strips with a balance of criticism is what I'll give you. I won't "suck-up" or brown nose" everything you post because I'm pretty sure that's not what you want.

You want criticism, there you go.

Seriously, Julia should have at least one metamagic feat. All she'd need to have done is study one Still animate object and the ropes would untie themselves for her.

She has been captured for some while now, and I doubt that they are letting her use here spellbook to study everyday.

Loved the randomness at the end of the comic. As for the SWAT team, it brought back shades of Piers Anthony for me.

Anyone remember Xanth? ::)

Ooh ooh! Pick me! Pick me!

Particularly the second book where the Good magician Humfrey was watching various breeds of magical beetle interact ("There's a rhinoceros beetle, trying to bulldoze down houses. Those houseflies aren't going to like that!"

And:

"Look! They've hired an assassin bug! They're going to get rid of that-!")

I did in fact notice the Rookie being the human siren at first, loled at Julia's "ear" remark, chuckled at the CPPD fleeing from a Summon Monster II, cracked up at the SWAT team, groaned at Pompey's "range touch", snickered when Julia got away, and smiled broadly at the Latte crying "FREEDOM!" ... because I've never seen Braveheart and had to read the forums in order to get it. ^^;

Ah well. All in all, a very very entertaining comic today!

Edit: Oh, and since this IS my 3rd year in college, I did get quite the kick out of first the title and then Pompey's "internship" reference. XD

Giant has to be one of the most creative people alive, coming up with jokes like these several times a week. Great all the way around.
As for the Xanth thing, I've heard/ seen reports that "A Spell For Chameleon (first Xanth Novel) will soon be a movie. Looking forward to that myself.

Anyone notice that the third member of the CPPD in panel 1 was the female officer from the earlier strip? It looks like the Giant wanted to correct earlier misapprehensions regarding how top-heavy she might or might not be.

So what? She'd still have everything memorized she had memorized when captured.

You don't lose spells just because you sleep.
And I find it unlikely that she would have had an appropriate spell memorized, let alone still spelled, at the time of her capture. But her escape is likely to be commented on in a future script, so we'll probably find out exactly how she did it eventually.

Given the dwarven bonus to Con, and taking into account being slowed down by heavy armor, the D&D hustle/forced-march rules tell us that he's probably made it, I dunno, at least 100 miles away by now.

There are no frequently used english words that come to mind that mean "a female friend that is not a romantic interest". The closest thing I can think of is lady-friend, which is most often used for clarification and conveys a meaning more of "female acquaintenance" more than "friend".

Not in my dialect. I would assume a "lady-friend" was a woman whose age made it incongruous to call her a "girlfriend" - e.g. the lady your grandfather is seeing. :-)

You could say "my female friend", but otherwise I'd just go with "my friend... she ... her". :-)

Out of curiosity, to which dialect are you referring? I've been all over the states and heard lady-friend used by every age group except young children.

Why would the term "lady" necessarily refer to an old woman? If it did, then the term "young lady" would be a total oxymoron (and me calling my 18 year old daughter a young lady would be absurd) and the term "old lady" would be unnecessarily redundant.

You could say "my female friend", but otherwise I'd just go with "my friend... she ... her". :-)

one of the best strips, however a DRAWING FLAW:

the left (as we observe it) boot of the SWAT team member on the right is transparent and we can see the sidewalk line through it.

I'm not starved for attention. I could care less what others feel about what I said. I just find it ironic that in the midst of all this positive "great job" energy there's not one negative response (besides my own). It not like every strip is perfect, everything has room for improvement.

I t should've caught your attention, it's not like I'm begging everyone to see what I said in the chaos of all the repeated statements.

I'm simply expressing the humor in it.

I was too busy skipping over the repetitive praise to notice it. I often post negative comments, but no one pays attention unless you get them in early, before the thread is bloated with typical praise.

However:

You really should not waste your time. This is from the giant:

I actually encourage people to discuss what they think of the comic--as long as the Rules of Posting are followed--but no one should expect anything they say to be taken to heart by me. First, it's unlikely that I will read it at all. And second, I don't alter the comic based on what other say. I don't pay attention to criticism OR praise; I simply write the comic for how I think it should go. I leave it to the individual reader to decide whether that makes the comic good or bad.

New comic is up.
That was moderately clever. More.

I don't pay attention to criticism OR praise.
Actually, there's reasonable circumstantial evidence to indicate Rich does, on occasion, adapt non-plot/character-related elements of the strip in response to fan complaints. I imagine, however, that he also appreciates the benefits of plausible deniability in this regard.

I have to ask, because I'm mean, heartless and cruel that way...

What kind of substances have those who think "Freedom!" is a Braveheart reference been abusing, anyhow?!

Sorry, but the mocha latte has no woad and no particular resemblance to the film. I think I have to go with it being "random funny" rather than "really bad and undeveloped Braveheart reference."

If it's any consolation to those who disagree, I also think anyone who thinks giant evil bugs is a Starship Troopers reference is probably abusing the same stuff.

Don't get me wrong, it was a good comic - but let's not attribute exceedingly poor parallels with certain movies as necessarily being a deliberate attempt, especially when it makes Mr. Burlew look bad due to their being poor parallels and nowhere near as well-developed as the deliberate parodies and in-jokes. The rookie? Class. Pompey turning out to be just as much of a pompous ass as V? Also class. The bugs (and the reaction thereto) and the final panel? Just good clean humour, that's all. If you look for more you'll only be disappointed.

Bottom line - if it'd been a Starship troopers reference I'd have expected a mantis-like bug rather than fiendish centipedes, and if it'd been a Braveheart reference, the coffee would've needed woad and a bigger part. "You may take our coffee, but you'll never take our FREEDOM!!!"

Nuff said.

Now, on the subject of negative replies - why is is that everyone who expresses their displeasure must always do it with the gloomy attitude of "i'm going to be flamed for this", "going against the grain", etc....like we're all a mindless fanboy horde, and they're some sort of noble rebel speaking out against the masses...grr. I don't have fear in expressing my opinions for a web-comic. That's is why I commented in the first place. I like the comic(s), it's just people give each one to much overly exaggerated praise. I'm sure if Rich posted a picture of his hand with a drawing of Roy for comic 152 on all the fanboys would be jumping out of their seats with excitement.
