View Full Version : Contest 5e Spellbrew Contest II: The Themes they are A-changing

Ninja_Prawn
2016-11-03, 05:03 AM
Roll up, roll up, for the return of the Giant in the Playground 5e Spellbrewing Contest!

We haven't had any 5e contests for a while so, as the resident doyenne of spellbrewing, I've decided to kick one off. This is a competition, open to anyone, where the objective is to brew the best spell as determined by the voting public. There will also be a prize for the best creator overall. The theme for this contest is change, which you may interpret in any way you like, be it literal, abstract or comedic.

The Rules
Each creator may enter up to three spells.
Creators should post their spells in their own thread, then link to them here. That way, people can offer criticism and feedback without cluttering up the contest thread.
Spells may be any level from cantrip to 9th, and may belong to any school. You may specify which class lists the spell goes on, but you do not have to.
The spells must in the 5th edition D&D style, with all the appropriate components.
The deadline for submissions is 23:59 (UTC) on Wednesday 30th of November, 2016.
Anyone may vote, but creators must vote in order to be eligible for the title.
You may not vote for your own spell.
Each voter gets two votes.
Voting closes at 23:59 (UTC) on Friday 16th of December, 2016.
I (Ninja_Prawn) will hold the casting vote in the event of a tie, because run-offs are tedious and unlikely to attract many voters.
You are welcome to use the template below to format your spell.

Malpaxar's Motoric Reversal
Widow's Mite I

WrittenInBlood
2016-11-03, 05:34 AM
Totally unoriginal, but hey - I'm first to post it!

Widow's mite
1st-level conjuration
Spell lists: Bard, Warlock, Wizard

Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Self
Components: S
Duration: Instantaneous

1d8+1 copper pieces appear in your closed fist. They are indistinguishable from other coins without magic assistance; however, they emanate with conjuration aura, discernible by means of detect magic or similar spells. Aura fades gradually, disappearing after 8 hours.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level, conjured coins are silver. Using spell slot of 3rd level or higher, you conjure gold pieces.

***
Here's another one.

Malpaxar's Motoric Reversal
4rd-level enchantment
Spell lists: Wizard

Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 60ft
Components: V, S, M (a silk glove)
Duration: 1 round

Spell alters target's sense of "left" and "right" parts of its body. As a result, target suffers disadvantage to attack rolls, Dexterity checks and saving throws, and its speed is halved. At the start of each of its turns target is allowed an Intelligence saving throw, on success ignoring all effects of the spell for the remaining duration, yet in that case they come back for one additional round after spell expiration.
This spell doesn't affect oozes and plants.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, spell duration is prolonged by 1 round per spell slot level.

1k8+1 copper pieces

Will you be entering any other spells or just this one?

Well, first time making a 5e spell. Hope I do well.

Mammon’s Cash Shower
5th-level conjuration

Casting Time: One action
Range: 300 ft.
Components: S, M (a handful of gold pieces (At least 10 gp))
Duration: Concentration, up to 10 minutes

Invoking the power of the archdevil Mammon, you create a large storm cloud in the shape of a cylinder that is 20 feet tall with a 10 foot radius, centered on a point you can see within range. The cloud begins to rain either copper pieces, silver pieces or gold pieces (your choice). Any creature that starts its turn in the radius or enters it must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 3d10 bludgeoning damage and 1d10 of either acid (if raining copper), cold (if raining silver) or fire (if raining gold) damage. At the start of each of your turns, you can move the cloud up to 10 ft. in any direction within the spell’s radius. The coins magically disappear after hitting the ground and are not usable.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 6th level or higher, the rain deals an extra 1d10 of damage corresponding to what is raining from the cloud.

Following the SCAG cantrips...

Vampiric Blade
Necromancy cantrip
Casting Time: One action
Range: 5 ft.
Components: S, M (a weapon)
Duration: Instantaneous

As part of the action used to cast this spell, you must make a melee attack with a weapon against one creature within the spell’s range, otherwise the spell fails. On a hit, the target suffers the attack’s normal effects, and if the target is not an undead or a construct, it takes an extra 1d4 necrotic damage. You regain hit points equal to half of this damage (rounded down to a minimum of 1).

At 5th level, the melee attack deals 2d4 damage to the target. This damage increases to 3d4 at 11th level and 4d4 at level 17.
_______________

I'll leave this here so I may add something else later.

Thanks for the entry. I'll leave it up to the voters to determine how well it ties into the theme... :smallconfused:

Poison Fang
Transmutation Cantrip

Casting Time: 1 Bonus Action
Range: Self
Components: V, S
Duration: 1 minute

With words that spill out of you as a hiss, large fangs dripping venom grow from your mouth as it stretches into a gaping maw of nightmarish proportions. For the duration, you gain a melee bite attack that you are proficient with. You may use your spellcasting ability instead of Strength for the attack and damage rolls of attacks with this bite. The bite does 1d4 points of magical piercing damage on a hit, and any creature damaged by your bite must make a Constitution saving throw, on a failed save the creature takes 1d4 points of poison damage and is poisoned until the end of its next turn.
The additional poison damage from the spell increases by 1d4 when you reach 5th level (2d4), 11th level (3d4), and 17th level (4d4).

I intent to post more, just this is one I've got for now. Would you like me to post the new ones here in this post as well, or just do it in a later reply?

Original thread Here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?434148-Grab-Bag-of-5e-Homebrew-Spells-and-cantrips-PEACH). Apologies for the Link-ception, just its in with the rest of my collection of homebrew spells.

2nd Entry
Spelljack
3rd Level Enchantment
Casting Time: 1 Action
Range: 60 feet
Components: V, S, M (a loop of thin chain attached to a ring)
Duration: See Description
Choose a creature within range. The target must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save a spell of your choice of 4th level or lower controlled by that creature becomes your spell for the remainder of that spell’s duration and you control it as your own. You must use your own concentration to maintain the spell if required and the you automatically gain control of the spell if the target willingly lets go of its concentration.
At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, you may target an additional spell to steal for each spell slot level above 3rd.

Original thread can be found HERE (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?505510-3-Homebrew-spells-with-a-MTG-Blue-Red-style).

EDIT: So, just realized my Spelljack's "at higher levels" is jacked up. Increasing the slot spent would let you steal higher level spells. But I guess people liked the concept anyway so that's nice.

Would you like me to post the new ones here in this post as well, or just do it in a later reply?

Either is fine, as is starting a new thread (though I can see why you wouldn't want to take that option). If you put them in different posts, I'll just link the spells individually in the 'tally' post.

I don't necessarily love my names for them, but here you go:

Magical Transference
5th level Transmutation

Casting Time: 10 minutes
Range: Touch
Components: V, S, M
Duration: Instantaneous

You transfer the magical properties of one magical item onto another non-magical item of the same type (Weapon, Armor, etc.). Any magical ability which could not appear on the new item is lost. Ex: Dancing Sword explicitly says any sword, you could not transfer this ability onto an Axe. The original item disintegrates once the magical properties have been transferred from it.
Bendel’s Gem Blast

1st-level Evocation
Spell lists: Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard

Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Touch
Components: V, S, M
Duration: Instantaneous

At your touch, one gem of at least 10 gp in value becomes laced with arcane energy, causing the facets to ripple and change, facing inward. This gem becomes indistinguishable from a rounded pebble. You or someone else can make a ranged spell attack with the gem by throwing it or hurling it with a sling. Alternatively, you can place it on the ground so that the next person who comes within 5 ft of it sets off a reaction. When the energy in the gem is released due to attacking or through proximity, it deals 2d6+your spellcasting ability modifier radiant damage to each creature within a 10 ft sphere. If you cast this spell again, the spell ends on any gems still affected by it. When the energy is released from the gem, the facets return to their original orientation.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, you may charge one additional gem for each slot level above 1st.

Ray of Seasonal Wrath
8th-level evocation

Casting Time: One action
Range: 150 ft.
Components: V, S
Duration: Instantaneous

Channeling the power of the season, you release a powerful ray 150 ft. long and 5 ft. wide. Each creature in the path of the ray must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 10d8 lightning damage in spring, 10d8 fire damage in summer, 10d8 necrotic in fall or 10d8 cold damage in winter, taking half damage on a successful save.

I think it makes logical sense. It's unusual to move the save into the target's turn, but I can see why you did it.

Grammar note: it's with an apostrophe means it is. Its with no apostrophe means belonging to it.

And here's my third and final entry. Hope you enjoy!

Arms of Sekolah
2nd-level transmutation

Casting Time: One Bonus Action
Range: Self
Components: V, S, M (a shark tooth)
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute.

You invoke the power of Sekolah, god of sharks, transforming your arms and hands into sharks for the duration. You gain a swim speed of 40 ft. as long as you aren’t wearing heavy armor, and can make two bite attacks against creatures within 5 ft. of you. The bite deals 1d8 + your Strength bonus piercing damage.

Anything you are wearing on your arms and hands meld into the new form. While the spell is in effect, you cannot use or do anything that would require hands, and cannot cast spells that require somatic components. If you try to make a bite attack with this spell against a sahuagin, you take 1d4 psychic damage and the spell ends.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the bite damage increases by 1d8 for every level above 2nd.

Elemental Safeguard
2nd-level abjuration
Casting Time: 1 reaction, which you take when you would take acid, cold, fire, lightning, or thunder damage
Range: 60 feet
Components: S
Duration: 1 minute (concentration)
This spell grants you the ability to attract and soften the damage of a particular element. You gain resistance to the triggering damage type for the duration. Also, whenever a creature within range (expect you) is targeted for a ranged attack that deals the same type of damage as the trigger of this spell, the energy turns its direction mid-air and re-selects you as its attack target.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, for each extra slot level above 2nd, this spell can specify another type of damage that is treated as the triggering damage type of this spell, and you gain resistance to that damage type. You can specify only acid, cold, fire, lightning, and thunder damage for a triggering damage type.

The "change" it invokes is the "attack target".

The spell can be used by Druids, Rangers, Sorcerers, Warlocks, and Wizards. And as a side result, Eldritch Knights and Arcane Tricksters as well. Created mainly to aid gish builds. The "At Higher Levels~" part exists mainly to support Bladelocks.

My entry:
Rain of Pain
1st-level Transmutation

Casting Time: Bonus Action
Range: N/A
Components: V, M (a decorated arrow)
Duration: Instantaneous

You transform an arrow into another object mid-flight. When you cast this spell as a bonus action before making a ranged attack with a bow or crossbow, you may transform the arrow or bolt mid-flight into another non-magical object weighing 10 Ibs. or less and worth no more than the arrow (you can adorn arrows with precious metals or decorative carvings to increase their value), changing the default damage of the attack to *object's weight/10*d10 (objects weighing less than 10 Ibs. do 1d4 damage and objects weighing less than 1 Ibs. do 1 damage), and causing any logical effects according to the specific object. The object disappears 1 second after hitting (or missing) its target (but not necessarily effects of it, such as fire).

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the maximum weight of the object increases by 10 Ibs. per level of the spell slot expended.

Opinion Swap
3rd-level Enchantment

Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 30 feet
Components: V,S
Duration: Instantaneous

This spell allows you to attempt to swap your opinion on a particular subject with that of one humanoid creature within range.

When this spell is cast, the target must make a wisdom save, gaining advantage on the roll if the chosen subject is extremely significant to the target. On a successful save, the target feels a sudden intrusive thought telling them how to feel about the subject in question, but is able to ignore it. On a failed save, the target's opinion on the chosen subject changes to the caster's opinion, and the caster's opinion on the subject changes to the target's former opinion.

Note that the 'opinion' being transferred is only the emotional valence associated with the subject, so if the caster chooses 'The King of the Eastern Isle' as the subject, and hates the king for reasons X,Y,and Z, on a successful casting of the spell, the target will acquire a visceral hatred for the king, but it won't necessarily be for reasons X,Y, and Z. Instead, the target will come up with their own reasons to justify their new opinion. Meanwhile, if we assume the target previously loved the king, the caster will still recall reasons X,Y, and Z, but will now find them unconvincing on an emotional level, although they may still understand them intellectually.

Also note that there is no lasting magical effect created by the spell which forces the new opinions to stay fixed in place. If the caster or target's opinion on a subject they previously felt strongly on is switched to a neutral affect towards it, they will likely regain their initial opinion before too long for all the reasons they developed that opinion in the first place. However, strong opinions in either direction will usually be much slower to change, as most humanoids will tend to interpret all evidence about the subject in the best or worst possible light to confirm their existing feelings.

The subject you choose may be a particular person, a faction, an ideology, religion, place, nation, artistic movement, or almost anything which can be described by a single word or phrase. You may choose a subject the target doesn't know about, in which case their original opinion on the subject is treated as total ambivalence towards it. The target still won't know about the existence of the subject after the spell is cast, but will rather have a subconscious, 'gut-feeling' about the subject should they ever come across it in the future.

So, I like economics...and I like utility spells. So I made two economic utility spells. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?507104-Merchant-s-Boons-(Spells))

I've thought of about half-a-dozen ways to abuse these, but there's more abuses still that are unavailable due to intentional (and sometimes merely suggested) restrictions on the spell. They're admittedly a bit campaign-dependent (they might not make sense in some games), but they're useful enough that the PCs can take them without feeling cheated, and NPCs can use them for more mundane things.

I really like it, I just think it's maybe somewhere between 3rd and 4th? It's one of those niche spells that's sort of hard to place. When it's good it's REALLY good, but when you don't need it it's sort of dead weight. In the end you're probably right to be conservative.

Alright! I am not going to help at all with this but I am voting for Mammon's Cash Shower because raining monetary death on people sounds awesome.

And I can't possibly be unbiased with a spell as random and cooky as this one. Kyu's Wonderous Ray of Wonders takes my second vote! \o/

Widow's Mite and Ray of Seasonal Wrath.

A literal interpretation of the theme and a spell that means the season matters in-game? The first was punny enough to make me laugh and the second is just awesome.

I think Feral Footman and Trace Time are particularly awesome out of this lot, but there are a whole bunch of others which I'd happily use. Energy Substitution seems like it could be very useful, and I love the pun of Mage Armoire!

15 hours left, y'all. We're tied for first place at the moment, so late voting could make all the difference! :smalleek:

It looks like you're going to have to cast the deciding vote ninja.

No pressure....

THE VOTES ARE IN - TIME TO ANNOUNCE THE WINNER!

Best Spell
With four votes each, we have a three-way tie for Best Spell between Devcon1's Cash Shower, Stan's Trace Time and WindStruck's Wondrous Ray of Wonders. Therefore, in my capacity as contest host, I will be casting the deciding vote in favour of... *drumroll*

...Mammon's Cash Shower!
Congratulations, Devcon1! Well done also to our runners-up, who will receive a prize as well, and to everyone else who entered. There were some great spells in there; I look forward to seeing you all next time!

Best Creator
This is also tied, with eight votes each for Devcon1 and WindStruck. Counting my casting vote for Cash Shower, however, Devcon1 edges into the lead, taking the Best Creator prize as well! An excellent showing for the Playground rookie.

So, to summarise:

Best Spell:
Mammon's Cash Shower by Devcon1

Runners-Up:
Trace Time by Stan and Kyu's Wondrous Ray of Wonders by WindStruck

Best Creator:
Devcon1

Prizes have been sent to the winners by PM. Thank you all for participating.
