So my players are starting at level 7, and I told them each will be given a certain magic item. Each matching up to their build.

My sorc said he didn't want anything crazy. He asked for a small magic carpet and a bag of holding. Compared to the other players, this is a rather minor request and I felt that I could easily oblige him. He has also now, with one of our characters playing a race he wants to research, has asked for a leather bound book that only he can read what is written.

So I know Vecna has a book whom is similar only for wizards, but is a wondrous item. I was thinking I could psudo make a new one. Have it start to him as a normal book, with a minor enchantment to it, that he will believe is the hidden writting. And unless he look significantly deeper that is all he will know for a while. I was thinking that it will be connected to Vecna and everything he writes will be passed along to God. And eventually, later in our campaign he will start getting messages in the boom he can chose to write back to.

Maybe if at that point he does some shady ****, or pledges some loyalties, it will buff up as an item. This is just a thought, and if he does an identify spell or rolls a super good arcana I'll tell him there something hidden he can't decern but gets a strong sense of darkness or something. How does this sound?

The bag could start coughing up items just as the book starts coughing up messages. The twist: even though they look like a matching set, the bag and book are connected to two different planar entities that are sworn enemies. Each will promise glory and power if the sorcerer will side with them and dispose of the other item, but horrific retribution if he will side with the other or try to play both sides.

Personally I would be apprehensive to give out magic items that are very rare or legendary to such low levels. Even if they are 'not that strong'.

I also don't quite understand what is magical about a book that he (theoretically) can only read. Why not give him an obscure language and have the book written in that, all the while keep it non-magical?

Also, even if you do make it some magic mojo tome of somthingness; there are spells and abilities that let PC's read other languages and, in the case of warlocks, allows you to "read all writing" which can be interpreted to go beyond language. So even then he may not have his wish to be the only person who can read it. Just something to consider.

The idea would be the book looks blanket to anyone else but him.

Hmmm. That is one way to do it.

If you really want to be mean, to everyone else it looks like he's just carrying around and obsessed with porn.

The illusory script spell can do this at 1st level. If he wants to do this so much he can use his resources (spell choice/class/feat) to get the spell.

A blank book is suspicious, a book of 1001 recipies for salted pork is just good survival scense when adventuring. Make all spells look like cooking instructions
