First off, welcome to the wonderful world of modded minecraft.

First off, you will need Minecraft Forge (https://files.minecraftforge.net/), which is needed for roughly 99.9%+ of all mods out there. Get the installer and it'll create a profile within Minecraft's default launcher. There's going to be a Mods folder in your Minecraft folder once you do this. That's where the mod files go.

If you want a GUI which gives you a greater ability to mix n match mods, check out MultiMC (https://multimc.org/). It lets you manage multiple instances, helps you install the correct version of forge, and helps you manage your mods. Pretty much the closest thing you're going to get to a Mod Manager for Minecraft.

However, if you're just wanting plug n play versatility without wanting to pick and choose your own mods, and use a mod pack, you're going to want to use one of several launchers.

The first I'd suggest is ATLauncher (https://www.atlauncher.com/). It's a solid piece of software that works. Tons of public packs available. I happen to have a mod pack up on the ATLauncher, but you're probably more interested in one of the larger mod packs, so you're probably going to want to check out things like Resonant Rise, which the Yogscast crew used for some time.

After that, there's the Curse (https://www.curse.com/games/minecraft) launcher. Personally, I'm not a fan of it because I run Linux, which Curse can't run on. But if you want to play the Direwolf20 pack, you're going to need it, now that the old FTB launcher is largely depreciated in favor of the Curse launcher.

Neat, that is very helpful. Nice to see i can just nab a Mod Pack that should have most of the stuff i want, as i really just want all the mods they used in Moonquest.

I wouldn't necessarily say the FTB launcher is deprecated. That said, it could use an update. As is it's still a bit light on 1.10 modpacks.

The vast majority of the FTB crew are no longer working on their launcher and are now either Curse people working on the Curse launcher, or are making packs for the Curse launcher. Which is why I say that the FTB launcher is 'largely' depreciated. Sure, there's occasional update or pack release, but they are really pushing people to the Curse launcher with the intent to fully depreciate the Launcher at some point in the undefined future.

Strange, because they were saying that wasn't what was happening, but I guess things changed. Oh well, time to abandon ship then.

Slight problem. I downloaded the installer and then extracted it to my Minecraft folder, but i got nothing for mod folders.

You don't extract it to your minecraft folder. You run it as an executable. It will then create a new minecraft folder which will contain the mod folder.

Or you can just download the Moonquest pack from the ATLauncher (also ran as an executable)
