I've been thinking about making classes based on fire emblem mainly the dark knight. Any idea on how it would work? I think a paladin/mage dual class could work but I think that would be too complicated, thanks.

It would be nice to state the aspects of the class you want in particular when you ask for requests like this.

Do you want charged magic items ala FE's tome magic system?

Do you want a mounted spellcaster?

Etc etc.

One thing if homebrew is allowed is Lix Lorn has some FE based 3.5 classes.

Dark Knights are just gishes on horses. If a normal horse isn't good enough, use Wild Cohort (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031118a) to get a better horse.

More significant is that fire emblem casters aren't anywhere close to dnd spellcasters. They're all variations of warlock. So a Dark Knight is a warlock with Battle Caster and Wild Cohort, with a level of Fighter or something for proficiencies.

Also note that in fire emblem mounts have nothing to do with combat, they're just a move speed boost. When dnd makes something that gives you a "mount," it makes that mount into a potential combat threat at the same time. Fire emblem mounts are actually best handled as completely normal mounts, which are not targeted in combat for the simple reason that a live horse is better loot than a dead horse. The problem of area attacks is already handled by the fact that fire emblem casters are warlocks and thus don't gain area attacks for a long time, if ever, and maybe some sort of Mounted Combat (Evasion) feat.

To expand on this, the Silverwood Arcanist (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031209a) class requires Wild Cohort. If you want to be a caster on a horse, it's not a bad class to enter.

There's also the Knight Phantom from Five Nations, which is a full 9/10ths casting/full BAB class focused on riding a Phantom Steed.
