Let's do it in one dimension for simplicity, let's assume the ambient light level is dim light

L1D3456789101112

L = non magical light source with a radius of (40ft)
D= an object with darkness cast upon it (radius 20 ft)
The numbers are 5 ft squares

squares 0,1,2,3,4,5,6 are definitely dark
are squares 7 and 8 illuminated? would someone in the squares 7,8,9,10,11 or 12 see some light?

My question basically is: does the darkness "sphere" block the light?

(I'm asking for a pathfinder game but I think it should be the same for other systems)

No. Spells with areas or effect areas only function within that area. So only the the area of the darkness is incapable of being lit by mundane sources, not any area around it. Just like how for an AMF, you're perfectly allowed to use spells on things on the other side of the AMF, as long as they're not in it.
