from what i've seen, the party is a pretty high level, way above 4, which is when rangers get their animal companion, so, i ask you, the viewing public, what happened to belkar's furry little friend?

trust me, you don't want to know

no really belkar probaly lost his animal companion and didn't bother to go find a new one, or he never got one in the first place

He made it into a hat.
Actually I doubt he knows he could get one. He seems to have a lack of Knowledge(Ranger Abilities)

Belkar's animal companion is the MitD! I hope that crazy theory has never been made up before.

He doesn't seem like the type of ranger to use an animal companion. In fact, he seems resentful of his class to begin with. He doesn't cast any ranger spells either (his wisdom score is probably so low he actually owes a modifier).

His animal companion is his rod of lordly might...after all it is quite a beast.

The whole point is that he only became a Ranger for the combat style. He seldom does anything besides stab. Some things he's missing out on or simply forgets he has (or is really bad at):

Evasion ("when did I learn evasion?")
Animal Companion
Spells (except for comic 58)
Track (you can't tell me you put ZERO ranks in Survival!)
Spot (Belkar, put some ranks in Spot already.)
The List Goes On

Although he almost certainly has it, we've never seen him mention Favored Enemy either. He has used Wild Empathy though. (It hasn't worked.)

I simply find it difficult to believe any animal would befriend Belkar, class skill or no.

Bluish Wolf, I find your avatar to be somewhat relevant to the current discussion.

This idea, while certainly on a level lower than V's gender, has been brought up many times. I did it myself once, a while ago.

Anyone reckon Belkar only pretends to be bad at tracking to piss Roy off?

Notice that when Haley asked him to track he said sure I can do it straight away.

Indeed and in an early strip he had little trouble tracking once he had proper motivation (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0022.html).

I think a pit fiend would work. But I have always imagined him with an infernal from world of warcraft.

Plus, if your animal companion dies, you get to summon a new one.
Mooch meals off the DM!

My guess on this one would be Kobold.
