View Full Version : So, has anyone actually said the word "lol" in real life?

Bloody_Dagger

Sadly, I have used so much of this online chat speak I have begun to speak it in real life. Much more then once I will think the word lol, and one time I actually said it out loud :smallconfused: I have even almost said the word "rofl" (I pronounce "roffle" >.>) Anyways, has this happened to anyone else?

I have said 'lol' irl. I have also said 'irl' irl.
It kinda makes you stop and think about how much game playing you're doing....

Yes, I have said "lol" in this "real life" you speak of. Mind you, it was entirely intentional.

Heh. This thread title makes me chuckle. Yes, I say 'Lol' IRL, but only when I'm being sarcastic... which is often... so I say 'lol' often. Though, it's always spelt out.

While I don't recall ever having said it myself, I do recall this one guy who would mockingly spell it out. Also, some of my friends had taken to using pwnd (pronounced as loaned, with the obvious replacement of l for p) in regular conversation the last year or two of high school.

Thats about the closest I've ever gotten. Otherwise I'd have to hope my tongue would fall out so I could run over it a few times with a Transformer shaped as a steamroller.

I haven't, and I dislike it when people use online slang in real life. This past year there was a kid in my spanish class who would do that all the time. lol, pwnd, everything. He and I got along horribly, but not because of his usage of lol in regular conversation, though that added to his overall annoying-ness

I use it to show that I am lame.

I'm going to bring the "it's not a word" angle. :p

It is now! *waves hand*

People probably said the same thing about "okay" back in the day. Butchering language just makes it tastier.

Edit: Er, anyway, to answer the question, yes I have, but only when discussing Internet slang with a linguistics professor. Does that count?

In any case, I've definitely used the word "pwn" and its variations numerous times in conversation.

No, I have not, nor will I ever. I have, however heard someone else say it. (Only once fortunately) but they spelled it out rather than pronounced it as a word. I have, however, very unfortunately met a group of guys who constantly would use "roxxorz" and "suxxorz" as real words in place of "rocks" and "sucks". ugh.

When me and my friends are messing around, we occasionally say it.

This is, of course, after we are totally high on sugar and caffeine. I never say it in "serious" conversatyions.

I say "lawl," to my friends when I'm joking around, but never really to anybody that I don't know, or to somebody who wouldn't appreciate it.

And sometimes I say "wtf," when I'm not really in the position to say the uh... stronger variation.

Funny though, because I never use either of those online.

Only when I'm being silly and/or sarcastic.

Yes, when mercilessly mocking a number of very geeky friends of mine who do actually use it (or even worse 'lolz'/lolzer' as well as 'roffle' and other horrible internet abreviations) in real life, which I often tell them off for. But myself I've never been tempted to use it in normal conversations ever because that would be extremely sad.

Sure, when playing.
I type it a lot, I tried not to pronounce it at all at first, especially not as lame joke. Yet I started to "lol" in teamspeak, cause really everbody does, and that rubs off on you.
I got used to others using it.
I still rather try to snicker convincingly into my micro, but others prefer to show their amusement by loling. It's ok.

I do find it stupid to use lol when *not* sitting in front of a computer, though.
When I hear someone pronouncing "lol" in the movies, at the bus-stop, in the snack bar, instead of just smiling, it's hard not to feel contempt. But probably that's just me being arrogant. If my friends would lol all day long, it's pretty certain I would start loling myself.

The geek contingent in my workplace use "lulz" sarcastically and (to our undying shame) "rofl" almost without awareness. We're thinking of having a 'rofl box' that people have to drop a £ into whenever they use the phrase. The closest I've ever gotten is in conversation only with close friends where I started using a phrase in thick southern drawl "Well that's a big ol' W-T-F good buddy." (where WTF is pronounced "Dubya tee eff")

Otherwise I'd probably spray someone in the face with acid if I heard internet abbreviations in real life.

There are probably a dozen internet terms that I even use online:

WTF
OMG

Not myself, but some time ago some company(Vodafone?:smallconfused: ) made a TV ad with scenes of people talking that way(Like a female punk getting a rat from her friend answering with a happy "t-h-x").

In this context, it was rather amusing.

To veer toward the original topic; I have never done so, but I have a friend who has done from time to time. Just in casual conversation, he has responded 'rofl' (to rhyme with waffle) when I cracked a particularly witty joke and 'I LOLed' when thinking back to an amusing incident. To be fair, he also performed an entire verse of a (comedy) song in L337... It was a lovesong about being a geek in love with a 'normal' girl.

I have, however, said rofl(roffle) on occasion in conjunction with waffle. FTW too, spelled out and saying 'For The Win!' though I rarely do. Internet lingo just doesn't work well out of the computer I so fondly love.

Thankfully, no. And I hate it when people do say lol mid conversation. I have used t3h (pronounced as tech minus the k sound) and pwnz0r, but only in jest.

I did however call someone a newb when he ran in front of my car, and I absolutely meant it. It was hilarious in a sad way. I also have a habit of yelling Leroy Jenkins when I rush into traffic after nobody let me in for a couple minutes.

I, and most of the people I hang out with, indeed, just about everyone at my school who speaks English as a native language, often use pwn (pronounced like own with a p in front,) n00b, Uber (which is technically German, but still,) and similar words. LOL and OMG are considered valley-girl type things to say, and only ever used in parody or to make fun of something. (always spelled out.) t3h is just another dialect/slang way to say the (as is da) and is used as well. Rofl (rhymes with waffle) and Lmao (el-mao (mao as in Mao Zedong)) and Roflmao (put it together) are used less frequently.

We also say Asot (ass-ot) short for "a series of tubes" to mean the internet. interestingly enough, I haven't actually seen that one on the internet.

The sheer number of internet speak that I have utterd aloud is staggering.. Though, it's usually on Ventrilo while playing WoW, with a group of nerds.

LOL "lawl"
WTF "Double You Tee Eff" Most times with the "Mate" added to the end. My favorite was when my mom said "What the f... does Double-You Tee Eff mean?"
OMG "Oh Emm Gee"
ZOMG "Zoh Em Gee"
ROFL "Roffle" and its cousin, "Roffle-Copter", also its redheaded stepchild "Roffle-Sauce"
Pwn "Pown"
FTW "Eff Tee Double-you" or "For the Win - Circle gets the square"
ROTFLMAO "rot-full-mao" (Mao, like Cairman Mao) I do believe I only said that to make fun of someone.

I use it sarcastically to make fun of other people...I suppose that counts. (ex. "Isn't this so funny?" "Oh Emm Gee Ell Oh Ell It Is")

I use RL in RL, though. Which is pretty silly. :S

I only say such things as "LOL" "PWND" "WTF" ect... in a sarcastic manner, as to mock their usage. Although I have been known to use "ROFLMAOTWSHOMGWTFBBQ" quite often. :smalltongue:

Well, to hang my head in shame:

There I was at work, flirting with a coworker. We were carrying on about shooting zombies with rocket launchers in Resident Evil or some such, when she asked me if we had something in the warehouse. I couldn't remember if it had come in or not, so turned and said: "Let me check, brb." I stopped, hung my head in shame at the realization of what I'd said, and quietly walked away.

I told my buddies about it and we all had a good laugh. After that we all started using e-slang in inside jokes.

I'm more of an old-timer for the internet slang (old-timer still being under 30). I've almost said 'Say' before a sentence, from back in the days you had to type it out every time.

Newbie's a pretty popular word, and that's straight from MUDs. My 50 year old dance students still don't think I'm a nerd, even when I call them newbies, go figure.

My friend will use chat and 1337 speak in real life just to annoy me. I think he can get away with it though. He's skipped a grade, and 4-5 years ahead of where he should be in school math.

At my school, being full of geeks, 1337 is the accepted norm, but I only ever use it sarcasticaly. I have taken to saying Oh-Em-Gee-Double-You-Tee-Ef-Bee-Bee-Cue at random points in conversation I find boring.

I do a lot on MSN, and stuff but in real life you don't do it because your already laughing.

Yes, yes I have. Quite repeteadly, in fact. It's a good way to convey your amusement to the other person when you don't want to do the whole laughing your ass off out loud due to some reason - ie, being in the middle of Calculus class :smallwink: - or are simply amused but don't really feel like truly laughing, which happens to me a lot, I have kind of an expressive disfunction, and actually laughing is rather hard for me, even when I do find stuff funny. I have also used other of these english-based acronyms and leetspeak-terms, such as newbie or noob, for example. None of my friends fnds it too odd, either. And we're not even native english speakers.
