The Rules. You! Read these!

In order to try and keep these threads from becoming unmanageable, some rules have been created, and they accent the forum rules. Please read those first.

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB one word posts should be spam everywhere. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* should also be considered spam. Quality of content trumps speed of response.
2. Ditch the "competition for control of the universe". It has ceased to be funny, and often branches out into little mock battles that fall into the spam definition laid out above. We've got a PbP section for fights, and even the Town has an arena, I believe.
3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well.
4. Stop advertising other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.
5. Please stop with single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."
6. Do not poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."
7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.
8. No asking "What's the topic" or the ilk. This is *not* a conversation where you could've missed the begining, it's a forum where the current topic is nicely recorded for you. So read up a bit first.
9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.
10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

:miko:Anyone found breaking the rules will be sent to stand in the corner and receive a very stern talking to! :miko:

I used to have Ubuntu on my machine, but I had the terrible idea of upgrading from 6.06 to 7.04 and it was awful, because there were some drivers missing and I could hardly work there. Then I remembered I didn't have the Live CD for 6.06 anymore, so now I'm stuck on Windows again *sigh*

I loved the video!!! It made me think of my ex-girlfriend. She is studying Visual Arts, so she works a lot with Stop Motion... I really like it!!

Yup. Ubuntu FTW. I run Ubuntu on my primary system with possibility to dualboot into XP (wich for some odd reason occurs more and more rarely these days... wnder why :D). I also think of installing the Kubuntu desktop so I will be able to run both GNOME and KDE. This is mostly because i think KDE looks a little cooler and flashier than GNOME and also because KDE has 2 editors wich support Ruby, wich is my pet programminglanguage right now. I also have an old old laptop running on Xubuntu.

Radikalskippy: You can download and burn your very own Live CD in Ubuntu. Here is a link to the downloads page: http://www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/download You can get both 7.04 (wich i recommend even if you have had some bad experience with it). It is also possible to download good old Dapper drake (6.06)

Really? Cause I'd heard really good things about Ubuntu 7. Haven't actually used it though, as I've given up linux in favor of osx. Also, you should realize that any driver you can get for any other linux disto (including Ubuntu 6), you can put on your Ubuntu 7 inst. It may not come on there, but i'm sure you could install it manually.

That's odd though, it's unlike linux (most distros, anyway) to ditch support for something. Anything. I wonder if you reconfigured the kernel manually if you'd find what you're looking for? Perhaps something was merely amiss with the autodetect?

We may have had this conversation already...:smallconfused:

Yes indeed, we had it some time ago... My problem is that there are no drivers for my video card, because it was integrated to the motherboard... I have tried configuring it manually and it didn't work... I could work only in 800x600 resolution, and it made me a bit nervous... I think I'll try downloading the Live CD for 6.06 or 6.10, I haven't tried that one...

Basically I loved 7.04 because of almost everything. If only I could reconfigure the X's...

The problem is, everyone knows windows is by Microsuck, people generally don't know Linux is mostly the work of the people of GNU (IIRC a typical distribution had 8% Linux and 26% GNU, with the rest the work of the individual distribution)

I prefer to use it, just because everyone who doesn't use windows is so elitist about their own pet operating system. And yet.. "suckdows"..

Actually, I really should stop. Sorry. I tend to get very annoyed by people who try to push another operating system onto someone because their choice is inferior. Note that that's the arrogant attitude taken by some people towards Windows, not necessarily the way I perceived yours.

A good reason why people stick with Windows may be because of cost, too. You know it's at least useable, and that it'll do what you need it to, so why buy another operating system when you're not even sure how it'll work for you? Barring free demos of them, most people won't go out of their way to try them. It's a complacency thing - no need to fix what ain't broke, y'see?

@Vonriel: the big fact for any computer user is that if they change to another OS, they have to "relearn the computer". Familiarity should not be underestimated as a reason for choice. But certainly is a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" situation.

Cool. With floppy disks too!

But IIRC this isn't the Amiga that had 512k and great games people like Psygnosys made. This one seems to be older.

I remember back when in computer gaming magazines the Amiga was the king of gaming computers. The screenshots were amazing, in a time where PC games where EGA at best and not that varied. The Amiga inherited Commodore 64's tradition as a gaming platform, and there were zillions of great games made for it in the UK.

Then it was quite funny. As games started growing, PC got its VGA and hard disks and what do you know? All of sudden Amiga became old. They couldn't keep it up with sub PC technology, and lost.

I recall it happened when graphic adventures like Sierra and Lucasfilm used to make were all the rage. They came in lots of floppies, but of course, if you had a hard disk it was a laughing matter. Then PC gaming got really good. And now it reigns supreme*

The history of the Amiga: http://www.amiga.com/about/history/?t=past

The Amiga 500 is probably what you were thinking of as the main gaming Amiga. The Amiga's downfall wasn't so much that they weren't as good, or didn't have hard drives (some did), but that they were seen as a gaming computer. Didn't quite get the business penetration they required. Then, one day, the game developers called the system 'dead' long before it was and started a self fulfilling prophecy.

More information can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amiga including some interesting facts about notable users.

Yeahhh, the MSX was a cool gaming machine too. My best childhood friend had one, and we used to play with it whenever her grumpy older brother let us.
It was a cool system even in the 8 bit world because it featured both british games that were also available for the Spectrum AND more consolesque games from japan, some big titles.

Now, you're from Brazil, IIRC. Can't remember if here in Argentina they were so popular. Here the Commodore was big, and the Spectrum too. But there was no Amstrad, sadly. I couldn't find any new games when we moved here. It sucked.

Then the MSX2 had really cool japanese games. It was really popular I think in japan.

Anyway, it's a pity, because I've been with that site for a little over four years and it's treated me well.
However! Believe it or not, the site shutting down is a bloody good convenience. It gives me the perfect excuse to go out and look for another file-hosting site. One more flexible, more variety of items allowed to be stored.
Before I reach for that Google sidebar (so impersonal!), I wanted to know if anyone here knows of any reputable file-hosting sites. Must be capable of hosting music files and flash movies, as well as all popular types of image.

Speaking of Smurfs, did anyone actually know them from the original comics from way before the cartoon was made?

Because everyone seems to know them from the cartoons, whereas they were pretty well known before, though they got a bigger worldwide exposure in TV.

I mean, as usual the TV adaptation was really dumbed down (which I know sounds pretentious when talking about the Smurfs :p). For example, the clever, funny thing about there being smurfs with distinct personalities is that in the original comic they all looked the same. This was probably deeemed to be "too difficult" for the mass audiences and so they made them all have recognizable individual features. Thus taking the cleverness out of it :s

The original comics are really good, if you like that european style (you should). They have a very detailed drawing style, and a surprisingly sharp sense of humour, in addition to featuring interesting satiric takes on modern social and political matters.

Let's all celebrate the legacy of the late great Peyo.

Oooooh cool never heard that one before. Now I have to get some Smurf DVDs and do some research if it's something there. When you think of it, Gargamel slightly resembles Winston Churchill :D

We had a similar thing a coupple of years ago. A group of students had made a paper wich basically pointed out a kids comicbook as showing mafia society. Things like the hills where the characters live looks much like sicily and so on. When one took a look it was all there. I'm still very convinced that it is entirely coincidental but it is funny.

Any of these are just someone misinterpreting what they see and putting there whatever they want to see. Some people just can't stand symbolism and the abstract without loading it with often erroneous concrete meaning.

My mom used to have a huge bucket of the original smurf toys. I think she sold them at a yard sale for 50 cents each, even when I told her not to.

She's a senior citizen, she doesn't understand eBay. :smallsigh:

Actually looking at eBay, looks like the smurfs are going for a dollar a piece. Interesting.

Ok, new topic.... and this is me wondering how people the in the southern parts of the US, and other semi-tropical, and tropical areas deal with this.

Anyway.... I have been doing battle this last week. Battle against an enemy so insidious I have had to go all Saddam Hussien on their butts.

All this because I really do not appreciate having to dodge a 2" long bug flying at my face.

Yes, 2 weeks before I move, I have started to find palmento bugs, aka GAINT cockroaches in my apartment.

Get a bug extermination service to kill them all.

I called the landlord, and guess what....

He is having the exterminator come AFTER I move out. Since I only have two more weeks there. These are 'outdoor' roaches, and in the south tend to only come inside in hot weather. The weather has been hot here, but I actually believe they are living in the basement here.

However, my own little chemical warfare seems to be working.... since I found another one last night.... but this one was already dead, so no flying in my face for it!

MA Maybe you live in high enough elevation where it's cool enough to keep them out. Also these guys haven't spread worldwide quite yet. The originated in Africa, but were named the "American Roach" because they were first characterized here.

But yeah, they tend not to go higher than the first couple of floors even in the southern parts of the US.

Emerald Rose, I think when I lived in LA for a bit, I expected them more... and not here in Ohio. Though it appears that they have established some population in Toronto (coughs in ZRS general direction) but that far north, they need to house themselves in building over winter, since they can not tolerate temperatures under 15 deg F. But still even my couple months down there, they weren't as much of a problem as they have been here for the last week. But it appears that I have fixed their little red wagon. *And you can tell I read a lot of websites about these guys, I find comfort in knowledge*

I just need to make sure I walk around the apartment in socks and not bare feet. Socks may be AC: 0 but they are +5 vs. cockroaches.... at least keeping them from touching me. Which is really the source of all the fear I have of them.

--- Back to smurfs ----

Since they are blue... that means their oxygen carrying pigment has to be copper and not iron, like most other 'higher' organisms. Oxyidized copper is blue/green which is why bugs 'blood' is blue, since they do have copper as their oxygen carrier.

So a choked smurf would look like non-oxidized copper.... which would be I guess copper colored? :smallwink:

Fortunately, I've never had to deal with cockroaches. There was a rumor that one of the dorms I lived in was infested with them, but I never saw them. My parents' old house had a thriving centipede community, though. My room was in the attic, and I woke up to find one of those creepy-crawlies (a rather large one) hanging on the sloped ceiling directly above me, about a foot from my face. Talk about a rude awakening...

On the topic of bugs. I'm phobic of them, as in seriously phobic. Let the record say, I live in possibly the WORST place to be bug phobic.

*ahem*

Bees and wasps. Everywhere. The particularly like to try and build hives at our front door and backyard, meaning if I see one...I will stay outside until it is dealt with. What's worse, is they have a tendency to FOLLOW ME. This isn't including the multiple times I've been trapped in a car with a wasp, one time resulting in a sting and the others nearly resulting in me jumping out of a moving car (in my defense, it flew straight at my face).

Roaches. Ho boy, do we have those. Memorable experience when I was 5 and we moved to our new house. It was sitting on MY BED. I was 5. I screamed bloody murder. I also found one in the dining hall up here at school, on the wall, right next to my table. I slowly moved my bag away and went to find someone to kill it (my phobia extends to an inability to even get close enough to kill them). I come back...and it's gone. Thankfully, another girl had seen my reaction and killed it.

Silverfish. Hehe...we get these but only in one of our bathrooms back home. Literally, only one. They aren't even in the room that is connected to the bathroom (the master bedroom). Unfortunately, said bathroom is my bathroom. I don't know what those things are eating, but we've had some huge silverfish in there before.

Assorted bugs. All I have to say is...running into a swarm of gnats while being bug phobic is terrifying. I've done it. Recently. It took me half an hour to calm down and my arms were red because I kept rubbing them to get the imagined bugs off of me (which wasn't entirely off the mark, since I found one crawling on my desk and the corner of my glasses AFTER I got back to my house and thought all the real ones were off). I can 'handle' rolli pollies and leaf bugs (cool, bright green things that look like...leaves), but I still won't touch them unless I need to. Oh...crickets are ok as long as they don't jump AT me. Jumping away is fine.

Spiders...aren't bugs. I'm ok with most of them unless A. they are brightly colored, B. look like a black widow/brown recluse, both of which we get, C. are by my bed, or D. are big. I've lived in this room for 7 and a half months now and until the last two weeks had never seen a spider in my room. Then I see four, two by my bed, two by my sink. I killed the two by my bed, the other two lived. The guy I'm dating and I once tried to kill a large wolf spider in his brothers condo...We never succeeded. The thing refused to die. *twitch* So we used a fly swatter to chuck it outside.

Thankfully, both places I live are pretty good on the pest-control front. :)

Cheers,
Syka

Wasps are cool. Bees, less so. Bees are fat...any bug that has that "fat" quality—the bulbous abdomen and a really loud, low buzz—automatically wigs me out.

The worst bugs, the ones I really find annoying, are the deer flies you get when you go camping. They bite and they follow you until you kill them, and they're dauntless. I really hate them.

I consider both the "keyblade" and the "gunblade" to be among the worst examples of videogame design.

But let's leave the gunblade aside for a while, because for that one at least I can see that they were going for "cool" (ie, A: "what's cooler, a gun or a sword?" B: "I know, let's make it both!!!" A&B: "Total win, dude!").

Keyblade...I can't take that fictional weapon seriously, can't even see it as a weapon...:s I'd be more scared of a giant spoon. Or a giant paintbrush, I don't know. :p

Well, i read that from a book i bought there, that showed some urban legends of Buenos Aires; like the ghost of Eva Perón, the diabolic chatroom, the forbbiden tatoo, etc.

the book was called "Buenos Aires es legenda 2"; i tried to find the first one, but i wasn't lucky enough :smallsigh:

I have to find that, I love urban legends. They tell lots of a particular culture.

BTW, so much posting in english is getting to your spanish spelling; it's "leyenda" :D Don't worry, same things happen to me...

Since I'm in this forum I'm sad to report that both my english and my (written) spanish have gotten worse. And that sucks because I have a lot of exams to take which require a high level of english production...which I definitely don't have as of late. Crap.

That's awesome! We've got some like that here. Just last week my cousin found one...

Awesome as in "I wouldn't mind finding one in my bedroom"? :p

Ceasar (cocktail): It typically contains vodka, clamato (a blend of tomato juice and clam broth), Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce, and is served on the rocks in a large, celery salt-rimmed glass, and typically garnished with a stalk of celery and wedge of lime.

Clamato: a drink made primarily of reconstituted tomato juice concentrate and reconstituted dried clam broth, with a dash of high fructose corn syrup, and USDA Red 40 to maintain a 'natural' tomato colour.

I feel quite nauseous all of a sudden. I must remember not to order a Bloody Mary next time I'm in Canada incase I get one of these instead. (They'll be carting me out of there on a stretcher)

My sister and I used to find beetles like that dead in our yard now and then. I'm not sure we ever found a live one, but then we weren't exactly looking, since even the dead ones terrified us. It was only made worse when we showed one to our dad, who's immediate reaction was one of nostalgia: "Oh, yeah, when I was a kid we used to try to catch those. Then we would grab them behind the pinchers and chase eachother around with them. They really hurt when they pinch you."

It sure is.

But honestly I wouldn't give a damn if it wasn't for the fact that I'm a translation student and I'm expected to have a high level of linguistic production in both languages. And besides that, that I pride myself in being someone who knows how to express himself correctly, has practically no spelling mistakes and has a very broad vocabular (all mainly in my first language, of course).

You know what? It's the internet, videogames and anime that are killing my literacy :( No one cares about spelling in the internet, and you get used to those monstruosities. You become lazy...and start thinking things like "LOL" and "pwn" are words.

Hee hee. Anyone here familiar with the game "Bookworm Adventures?" It's kinda like a mixture between scrabble and boggle, but with a central plot behind it.
Basically, you are a little green bookworm that fights off enemies by spelling words from a pool of sixteen letters.
My best words so far? Paradoxes, acclimated and Catastrophe.
If you spell a good enough word, the little worm goes super-sayan and causes a mushroom cloud to white-out the screen.

I have the nerdliest taste in games

So far only Baileys and a Malibu with Pineapple have pleased me. Any one have any suggestions? My 21st is this next May, so I'm already planning the drinking fest that it will be.

Nonono, don't take it back, this DOES rule.
I'm a fan of the original Bookworm, I have to say I'm really good at it. It's my type of game. It only lacks multiplayer, then it'd be perfect.

I've read about Bookworm Adventures in Penny Arcade, but I didn't fully buy the concept. I guess I'll try it anyway, because I might like it a lot. And it's not like there are so many word games out there...

Speaking of Scrabble, it's a sin that there's not a decent modern day online multiplayer version out there. I'd be all over it if there was.

Speaking of disturbing creepy-crawlies... Last year my mum had an elderly woman come in and ask her to check her ear. The night before, she woke up to a painful scratching in her ear, put her hand to it and pulled out a cockroach that had been looking for a cosy place to sleep. She was understandably pretty freaked out, and just wanted reassurance from a doctor that she'd gotten every bit of it out. Apparently there were scratch marks in her ear... The coast in the subtropics is not a pleasant place for bugs :smallyuk:
Also, there's no simple list of dangerous Australian animals on the 'net. To be fair, though, almost anything here could be on it...

I wasn't a huge fan of bugs, but I could tolerate them before helping the turf entomology prof with some research, and then taking his class when I was in college. After, bugs don't bother me what so ever. In face, some bugs can be quite interesting. I just found an adult Green June Beetle on the infield at work the other day. I was kind of excited actually since it's the first bug I've found/identified while actually working.

It looked kinda like a cockroach with no carapace or wings, its legs were tucked under its body like a caterpillar's, and it was bright blue with bright orange spots. Soooo cool!

It's weird how during the school year, Friday was the most celebrated day of the week. Now it's my most dreaded since school's out for the summer. Friday means weekend. Weekend means no updates for any web comics. It means my parents and older sister being home all day so I don't have the house to myself. It means that everywhere I go, it will be more crowded then during the week from people being not at work. It's not a huge inconvenience and I'm not complaining.Just thinking. Weekends were the best during the school year. Summer break comes and they lose their sheen.
