And a gourmet chef, at that?? That explains strip 279, I suppose. :belkar: "Needs pepper."

Now that I really think about it, I suppose I can see Chef Belkardee, but I never would have guessed it without him outright saying it.

I guess its also hinted at with his "extra chunky" salsa

Also, how he was able to identify the ingredients in the BBQ sauce

Not to mention, "They're actually tortilla chips."

Yeah, I guess Belkar is a chef. I'd just be afraid to eat anything made by him because it could have a knife in it or something. :smalleek:

I had forgotten that one. Are we sure he only has 4 ranks??

what's the Ability for Cooking skills? He said he's got a penalty at that

I think, Intelligence.

With -2 on it, it means int 7 ?

Morty

He doesn't have -2 to check because of his stats, but because of the lack of proper kitchen. And Profession is WIS skill anyway.

Most DMs with a brain larger than a thimble change the ability modifier for profession to best suit what exactly the profession is, and as Rich has been known to mod the D&D rules for OotS, I would say he did the same thing. Becides, Belkar has a wisdom score WAY lower than 7. I would put it at -3.

Well, assuming he's going with the rules on this one, it's a penalty to WIS. Maybe -1.

I gotta say, though, it's a good thing he's a Gourmet chef. A normal chef couldn't use vulture, but Gourmet is all about taking everything around you and turning it into a recipe.

Mold and spoiled milk? Cheese!
Rotting bird, rock-hard bread and some oil? Fried chicken!
A pot, a saucepan, and just about anything else? French cuisine!
The gourmet possibilities are endless!

Collection of Belker the Chef strips (for the budding future archivists!):

He identified the missing taste merely by landing in the soup (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0279.html)

He required only the finest buffalo wings (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0312.html)

He turned up his nose at prison slop (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0261.html) (there was a similiar bit in otOoPs)

He identified the ingredients of barbeque sauce by smell (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0098.html)

He made chunky salsa from improvised ingredients (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0358.html)

And, of course, Dragon Mag and today's strip (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0475.html)

(I took these from the comic disscussing page, not from memory)

Also there is the bonus strip (34a) in Dungeon Crawlin' Fools where he disses Iron Rations and produces a Roast Duck.

Thinking on it a bit, I see Belkar as an unholy union of Chef Ramsay and "Chef" Lecter. :smallamused:

Don't forget all the times Belkar has talked about harvesting various body parts from various beings, mainly kidneys.

Sooooo..... specializes in British cuisine then?

Erm.......

No. It'd have to be French. Nobody specializes in British. Not even brits. :)

I couldn't help but notice you didn't offer a suitable ability for gourmet chefs. I think wisdom fits just fine, at least to the extent that there's nothing much better.

Perhaps he also has ranks in Knowledge (Food), which gives him some synergy.

You can add this one: http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0330.html
Belkar proposing to make a dish from Oracle's lungs.

By the way: gourmet chef is the most halfling'ish ability Belkar has ever shown. It also indicates that he has more hobbies then killing or annoying other beings. There can be some synergy between killing and cooking though.:smalltongue:

Probably just the "free" 4 skill points in a profession or craft you can start with at level 1 if you want.

on the Origin of PCs. Some people say Origins instead, bit easier.

Yeah, I can definitely see Belkar as a chef, there have been lots of tiny pieces of information that kind of lead towards it which weren't really noticed.

Also, please stop using the BBQ trap sauce as evidence. He clearly says "Halfling senses activated." That is an aspect of race not skill. Although it may give him a synergy or circumstance bonus to Profession (Gourmet Chef).

Haha, that's awesome.

Icewalker, it could be that the Giant was making a joke about how halflings are almost always gourmet eaters if not chefs, and then after that he decided to make Belkar a cook. That strip in particular was early on, so it's not impossible, just slightly improbable.

In that case, charisma? It is an art form, after all.

That's primarily an urban legend, but it's still mostly what I figured he wanted them for.
