So I'm in a gestalt game at this point, looking to do a Spellthief//Hexblade (which is made of awesome, let me tell you), but I'm having some trouble with how I want to PrC.

I'd like to do a sort of luckthief theme on the Hexblade side, but Luckstealer's a divine caster and Fortune's Friend is pretty lame.

So is there something I'm missing out on that would fit the idea of a "thief of luck" mechanically as well as flavorwise?

Fatespinner?

Wouldn't that be hard to get into as a partial caster, though?

Well, yeah. You could use it for levels 15-20, though. This character would probably get a lot of mileage out of that 5th level ability, caster level loss or no.

Good call. What could I take in the interim?

You can start taking levels of Abjurant Champion ridiculously quickly and re-flavor it a bit. I'd start taking it as a replacement for Hexblade after seventh level, so you'll still get Greater Hexblade's Curse.

How about ... Complete Scoundrel's [Luck] feats?

Well, yes, those are good choices for the concept, except I was hoping for more "I take your luck and use it for my own" instead of "I'm incredibly lucky."

Also, I was hoping to use the feats on prereqs.

Don't forget the lovely spell Unluck. You'll have to take it on the spellthief side of things, but it fits the concept beautifully.

I plan to. I also plan on taking cheat and getting a wand of improvisation.

Hehehe. This character concept sounds like fun.

Flavor, all flavor. Luck feats can work fine for stealing the opponent's luck if you describe them that way.

Well, that's very understandable. Nobody said the Luck feats were especially powerful. :smallyuk:

Side note/plug: Fax, would you mind going and taking a look at the thread I just started on Homebrew? I could use a response from you in particular.

I'm away from books, but I'm fairly certain that Luckstealer can be either arcane or divine. I know it requires certain domains if you're doing it divine...

I just checked, and well, I confirm you're right.
Prereq (among others) :
- 3rd level arcane or divine spells
- Luck domain (for divine spellcasters)

And the Profession(gambler) is also a prereq for Fatespinner... sounds good to me !

Awesome. The final build looks like:

Hexblade 5/Abjurant Champion 5/Luckstealer 5/Fatespinner 5//Spellthief 20, taking a ton of [Luck] feats.

Unfortunately, you don't get 3rd level spells before level 11 with Hexblade or Spellthief ; but I'm sure you can ask the DM to waive that requirement - the build is cool.
