I recall there's a rule allowing you to make a ride check to negate damage to your mount, but my google-fu is failing me. Does anyone know where to find the rule?

Are you just thinking of the benefit of the Mounted Combat feat?

You're probably thinking of the Mounted Combat (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/feats.htm#mountedCombat) feat.

I feel silly now. I looked all over the ride skill, and couldn't find it, not even thinking that it might not be part of the skill. Thank you both.

If you're considering using mounted combat, you might also be interested in the steady rider (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031125a) feat from the Wild Life (http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031118x) series of articles. Then your ride skill modifier really is your mount's AC, if only once per round.

If you want more Ride checks to negate damage, Aglarondan Griffonrider 7 (Unapproachable East) can get up to 4/round.

Somewhat related, I remembered that with two levels of Totemist, the riding bracers soulmeld from page 84 of Magic of Incarnum may be bound to your character's totem chakra to give your mount evasion. The riding bracers also give an insight bonus to ride, which may be increased with investing essentia.

Should I know who you are IRL, or was this a lucky guess?
