I frequent places like amazon to get individual trading cards and dice. But when it came to miniatures, nothing comes up other than random boxes.

Where can I get individual, specific miniatures?

the reaper mini website would be a good start. they give free shipping over if you spend $35.

Other than that, my best advice is to visit every game shop in your area until you find one that stocks a respectable amount of minis. Hopefully one of them will.

As mentioned, Reaper are really good, but if you're look for specific models from existing lines, miniaturemarket.com is my go-to. Prices will vary a lot, but you can find both Pathfinder and official D&D ones, and even very old sets from 4e and before.

When buying miniatures, it depends on if you're looking for quality or quantity. Price adjusts accordingly. Off the top of my head, the following is a list of places I usually investigate for miniatures:

Cheap:

Reaper Bones

D&D Icons of the Realms purchased singly through miniature market.

Kings of War

Not cheap:

Heroforge (usually only for my character)

Dark Sword miniatures

Age of Sigmar

Warhammer Fantasy

Avatars of War

Malifaux (32mm means it only works for small humanoids to stay in scale. Not an issue for monsters as much)

Raging Heroes

Kingdom Death if you can get your hands on what you want for a reasonable price.

Dark Age for some stuff

I also have some other games I turn to for miniatures if I'm looking for something particular like a Way of 4 Elements monk (or monks in general), Chinese/Japanese characters, or other more niche choices for characters.

Have you tried Troll and Toad (http://www.trollandtoad.com/)?
They have a wide variety of minis, decent prices, and s&h are pretty reasonable too.

There are some worthwhile ebay shops that do individual specific minis, including wotc and pathfinder minis unboxed and sold without a veil of mystery. But that tends to be better with larger purchases, and there's some inconsistency. If you have a local place to go look at individual stuff, start there by all means, though.

I've used coolstuffinc.com for single miniatures before, good selection and if all you're getting is singles they have $1 shipping.

as mentioned by others, Troll and Toad and coolstuffinc are great sources of individual minis, particularly if you're looking for the prepainted D&D/Pathfinder ones

I have a HeroForge mini (unpainted). I can definitely vouch for the quality. Got mine in the Beta Grey Plastic, and it's quite good. They are expensive, though.

I actually just got two of the Beta Grey Plastic (which actually seems to no longer be beta now that I look at their website) in the mail yesterday. They're super cool. It's nice to be able to replicate some archetypes that aren't super common in stock miniatures.

If you have a 3D printer, Geek & Sundry has a whole collection of free minis to be... uhh... printed? If you wanted to use those.

There's also some places with really good looking 2D cutouts you can utilize, I forget their names, trying to track them down.

When you're like me and tend to choose race/class combinations that aren't typical, HeroForge is definitely the way to go. There's nothing quite like seeing *your* character come to life, as opposed to the closest approximation you can find in pre-made minis.

Indeed. If nothing else it let me make a wizard who's wearing armor!

ArcKnight does flat plastic miniatures if you wanted a cheaper option.
