In our last session, one of my players claimed his character had a special whetstone, which granted a sword some sort of bonus the first time it was used post-sharpening.

I've never heard of such a thing, and the CRB doesn't say a word about it. Does this exist anywhere in the Pathfinder rules?

perhaps an Apprentice's Whetstone?

At first glance, this appears to be a simple whetstone, and can be used as such to keep weaponry in good condition. However, an apprentice's whetstone makes weapons sharper than most. By spending 15 minutes sharpening a bladed weapon, the weapon gains a +1 bonus to damage rolls for the next 8 hours or until the weapon loses any hit points, whichever comes first. This effect works on both mundane and magical items. In addition, three times per day the user can press the whetstone to any item and speak a command word to repair it, as the spell mending. This effect always works on magic items, regardless of their caster level, and always restores its maximum amount of hit points.

It isn't a special whetstone, they naturally give 1 more damage on your first non-magical weapon attack but it takes 15 minutes to sharpen your weapon. At 2 cp it is one of the best things in the game if players actually cared to track it (which no one does).

It's use came from Adventurers' armory I think.

There's also the Hone Weapon (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/path-of-war/pow-e-feats) feat from Path of War: Expanded which reads

You’ve learned the art of bringing a fine cutting edge to your weapons.
Prerequisites: Knowledge (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/skills/knowledge) (martial) 3 ranks.

Benefit: You can spend ten minutes using a whetstone to sharpen a piercing or slashing weapon or up to 20 pieces of piercing or slashing ammunition to a fine point or edge. The newly-honed weapon gains a +1 bonus on damage rolls for one day. This bonus increases by +1 at character level 4th and at every four levels thereafter. Honing a weapon has no effect on its hardness (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/equipment---final/damaging-objects#TOC-Hardness) or hit points, and you may hone both magical and non-magical weapons. You can only hone manufactured weapons with this feat.
