An OotS Fancomic

New Artist - Keris Rain!

This is the main page for my Whitefeather OotS fancomic, which will now be drawn by Keris Rain, while I carry on with the script. We're aiming for one comic a week to begin with, and we'll see how we go from there! Once we've got work up and running again we'll probably update the banners and whatnot.

Anyhow, hope you enjoy my efforts, either way here are all the strips posted to date:

Character Biogshttp://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z175/banjo_the_clown/biogjenna.png
Jenna Church
Age - 18
Class - Ranger

Jenna's parents have been killed by Vortigern Darkspur, and he has taken her infant son Cal captive. She has sworn to avenge her parents and rescue Cal, with the help of her friends. Little has been revealed about her past, but Darkspur has suggested that having a child so young wasn't entirely her own choice. Despite the hardships of her recent experiences, Jenna retains a sunny, rather ditsy demeanor, and keeps the party together with her own positive outlook.

Oh, and it has become clear she can't ride a horse!

http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z175/banjo_the_clown/biogailish.png
Ailish Wyvernspyre
Age - 23
Class - Cleric

Ailish is an aspiring cleric of Father Varin, the God of Light, and divine fervour also shines within her. She was sent to Jenna's hometown by her holy order, and quickly built up friendships with the rest of the party. Having said this, she is rather quick to get frustrated, especially when Beech has one of his slow moments. Ailish has a strong and forceful personality, and can sometimes let her duty get in the way of her actions.

http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z175/banjo_the_clown/biogbeech.png
Beech Tree
Age - 24
Class - Barbarian

Beech is a slow and simple lad who has lived in town all his life that he can remember, which is only the last 6 years. Surprisingly gentle and kind, he is a sensitive soul who gets upset at the bad things in the world. He does his best to help the rest of the party, but often gets it wrong, much to Ailish's annoyance. Beech has known Jenna all her life, and see's her as a kind of big sister, despite being six years her senior.

Beech likes bacon, teddy bears and butterflies, though not all in the same sandwich.

http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z175/banjo_the_clown/biogdrake.png
Drake Clement
Age - 21
Class - Sorceror

Drake is another of Jenna's childhood friends. There is definite attraction between the two, at least on Drake's side, but Jenna either doesn't notice or choses not to acknowledge it. Drake is a novice Sorceror, and sometimes his magic doesn't manifest quite the way he would like. Drake is very touchy about his masculinity, because of his crappy hit points he feels less of a man than the mountain that is Beech.

Drake is often between familiars, most run away after meeting Cal! His current familiar is a koi named Jaws, who he keeps in a bag of water.

Join the club. I was here first.

My advice? Don't do a webcomic. It's insanely hard, and you will feel you have to meet a number of comics per month and it's hell.

I would love to help you with your comic. Perhaps I could help with back story. Or maybe make some villains?

Hehe I think you might be right with the difficulty part, but I'm really not thinking of doing it at that kind of level, where I feel obliged to do an update at a certain time, like poor Giant has been recently. I suppose I just want to do it as a kind of hobby & see how it goes and what it looks like further on. All I'm really thinking about at the moment is my character concepts and how people think they look etc, as everythings way to early to consider doing anything serious.

Nightwing, I may take you up on that offer at a later point, but at the moment I need to flesh my ideas out a lot more before I really start thinking about other stuff, cheers for the offer though!

I have started a webcomic 2 days ago. Here on Giantitp.com, I like it. You should do it too. We need more comics!:smalltongue:

A ranger with a harpoon? Madness...

I'm sure you could develop a more appropriate style if you tried. It's not like OotS art is easy to learn, and judging by your level, you're already well on your way to mastering it.

Agreed.

I've been wanting to do a webcomic for a couple of months now and so far I haven't even come up with one panel, just a few crappy sketches, lol.

Very large objection! Starting my webcomic was the best thing i ever did. So much so i have three now, even if one still has no comics. I only have about 5 readers but i still love to give those few people that pleasure.

A few contrasting opinions there, I understand that its really difficult to come up with a premise for a webcomic in the first place, and even more difficult to keep the thing going. But I am going to try, just to see if I can do it more than anything else I think!

And I think your right about the harpoon, I think I'm going to change it to a quarterstaff, it fits the character better as well as the class!

Right I've put together another concept, this time for my cleric, and I've also enlarged my lead character:

Right, before I did any more character concepts I decided to have a go at my first comic, hopefully it will help generate my ideas and get me started etc.

Strip 1 is below:

Tell me what you all think, in terms of story layout and my drawing, any criticism or nice things are greatly appreciated! Based on the feedback I'll decide whether to make a proper go at this or leave it by the wayside...

Note: Yes I'm already aware that the backgrounds are a bit bright, I'm working on modulating the colours a bit!

AmberVael

Hmm... you know, the thing that stands out most to me is how the comic isn't quite as... crisp as your avatar. It has been blurred a bit.
If you could figure out how to get rid of that, it'd be a good thing to do.

banjo1985
2007-07-18, 10:36 AM
Yeah I kind of notices that, especially on the samller character images, I'm not really sure what to do about it to be honest, it might just be a size issue.

If anyone can help with the fuzziness I'm using Inkscape and hosting on Photobucket

Yeril
2007-07-18, 10:40 AM
Hmm, Intresting, only criticism I can see is you jumped into the story too quickly, dead parents in the 4th Panel seems alittle too soon.

other than that good, Im looking forward to see more about this

Ah. Photobucket.
Well, I don't know what it is, but I've noticed that once I reach a certain image size on photobucket, it becomes blurry for me too, no matter how nice I have it before it is uploaded.
*shrug*

Probably if you got a site for your comic that would host your images for you there wouldn't be a problem.

Kurien
2007-07-18, 11:07 AM
It looks like a good start.

However:

Some of the backgrounds have really thick lines, which makes them look really blocky compared to the characters. Perhaps if the lines were the same thickness of the character's lines? The thick lines are worst on the house in the fourth panel.

Also, it's just my opinion, but the lead character, Jenna, looks very... girly. I think it is the hair, and the boots. Well, you probably intended for her to look like that...

Ava
2007-07-18, 11:13 AM
I have to agree that the line width is a bit of a problem. I would suggest using thicker lines for outlines and things in the foreground, then use thinner lines for things in the background.

Other than that I think it's visually pretty good.

So far the story reminds me of the beginning of Star Wars... but who is Cal?

AmberVael
2007-07-18, 11:16 AM
Then again, line thickness can help denote how thick/thin an object is as well, so that is another way you have to think of stroke width.

banjo1985
2007-07-18, 01:12 PM
Thanks for the comments about the lines, I agree the backgrounds look over-chunky, I'm going to edit the first strip and repost it in a few days I think, see if I can get it to look better!

Yeah the lead character does look girly, maybe a little more so than I envisioned, but having drawn her like that I can't really imagine her any other way, so she probably won't change. Except for changing that Harpoon for a quarterstaff...

Yeril - It might be a little quick, but I was going for a start that would set up the coming story for the comic, it's not something that will continue but I thought it was a good way to start, though common opinion may differ!

As for the star wars reference I really can't comment I've only ever seen the original 3 films, and that was about 10 years ago! As for who Cal is, well that will be aparent in the coming strips if I get this off the ground.

Edit - Here is the first strip again with thinner background lines, and with Jenna rid of that damn harpoon!

Strip #2 - Dying Words... Editted with Kurnours advice below
http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z175/banjo_the_clown/strip2-1.png

As previously, I'd really like to know people opinions. I've tried to sort the line thickness issue out, and I also had a go at putting slightly more humour into this strip. Any opinions on whether this looks like a goer would be good!

Cheers all

That's great!.

The line thickness in the first strip is much better, especially on the house.

However, in the second panel of the second strip, Jenna almost looks crazed :smalltongue: I think it's a combination of her hair and lines around the eyes. Also, the wrinkles under Jenna's mother's eyes in the the last panel look a little strange.

banjo1985
2007-07-20, 10:17 AM
Hehe thanks

I've changed Jenna's Mom's wrinkles on the last panel, and I think she looks a bit less weird now! I also noticed I hadn't dashed her speech bubbles in the last few panels, so I've changed that as well. As for Jenna looking a bit loony in the second panel, I was trying to make her look surprised at the voice of her mom but also relieved to hear it, but it didn't really turn out looking that way! Thing is, I'm struggling with working out how to change it...

ChimericPhase
2007-07-21, 01:30 AM
I think something that would help your background line-thickness issue would be to use non-black lines. Instead, use lines that are a shade darker than whatever they're outlineing.

Example:

http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/3694/marlisecret01kt4.gif
old comic I did sometime back

See the 4th panel? Dark brown, dark green outlines the tree, but keeps it in the background. I save black outlines for details and characters.

The harpoon was a great idea. Why? Why have you forsaken us so?

Hurkyl
2007-07-21, 05:31 PM
In the second panel of the second strip, you need to rearrange the text balloons. The natural way to read them is in the wrong order! (At least... I assume "Mom!" was supposed to come first)

Shadic
2007-07-21, 05:49 PM
Nightwing, I may take you up on that offer at a later point..Don't.

Anyways, for the comic...

Definitely make the text size bigger, I can hardly read it on my screen. The humor could use some work, and the art seems a bit cluttered - Everything seems to be one giant messy object, if you know what I mean?

And the Mom looks funny because you used black for the facial wrinkles, which is too strong of a color for a minor facial feature.

Also, the lines for the panels are far too tilted for my liking... If you clean up the general appearance a bit, I think that you could make this comic a lot better than it is.

Last, the whole "breaking a word mid-line with a dash" thing bugs me, it looks a lot better if you can avoid it. (For example, when you said "To be continued." at the end of the second comic.)

banjo1985
2007-07-23, 04:02 AM
Thanks for this batch of comments on the second strip. From what I can tell the general consensus is that my art and line drawing need to be cleaned up a bit, which I hope will happen as Ii do more strips, but time will tell!

Thanks for the note about my speech bubbles and the idea about darker shade lines rather than black, I think I may try this for the next comicand see what you all think compared to the first two.

Osamuna - sorry but the harpoon has been banished to the 7th plane of hell for the time being, but may return at a later point...

As for the humour, I'm not really sure I can do anything about it, it's the way I write and I put down what I thinks funny, however if no-one else thinks it is then maybe I should stop this before I get too into it!

For the next strip I'll be introducing the other three party characters, hopefully I should get it up in the next few days (damn my overcomplicated art style!)

Thanks again all

banjo1985
2007-07-24, 03:09 AM
Yeah sorry, I'll be the first to admit my art looks a bit busy, but I'm hoping it will settle down as I carry on and get comfortable with a certain style!

Shadic - The line is supposed to be her arm with her hand over her eyes, as in a 'duh' moment because of Beech's dumb comments, though looking at it that isn't clear!

Lissou
2007-07-24, 05:27 AM
I'm getting more and more curious :)

To make her look like she's thinking he's dumb, maybe you could close her eyes. You know, use lines instead? And I think it might be clearer if her arm wasn't on her face, only her hand, if you know what I mean. That line is a bit hard to interpret as it is.

I really like your art, though, and I think it looks better from one strip to the next, so keep going :).

I think the art and composition pulled together better in the last one (though why does her hand glow green?)

Hello all you forum types, I've got a strip ready to put up, but I'm not particularly happy with it, so don't expect too much! I wanted to make it a double length strip but it was going to take me too long, and I didn't want the trickle of interest to dry up!

Just a quick character creation while I'm working on the 6th strip (which will be along soon).

I tried a different art style to se what jenna came out like, and here it is:

http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z175/banjo_the_clown/newjenna-1.png

Woah, the plot thickens. Cal is her SON? I figured it was her little brother! So... who's the father?

P.S. Nice strip, and I loved Elan's guest appearance. The characters aren't fleshed out yet, but neither were OotS's characters within six strips!

LOL, I just noticed the bunny faces on the curtain rod. :smalltongue:

For a while I edited a fantasy fiction webzine, so I had to wade through hundreds of stories to pick a few for each issue. I always had more than enough "good" ones to choose from after the initial cull, but then came the hard part of picking just the best to publish.

What often made the difference was the sparkle that the right extra details added to the story. A lot of people could get the basic mechanics of the prose and storytelling down enough so that there may not have been anything wrong with it, but again, there was nothing special to make somebody keep reading either.

While overall, the presentation isn't as "smooth" as the original OotS (and it certainly took time and practice for Rich to get to his current level), little things like the bunnies sprinkled throughout your pages shows that you're thinking beyond just the main story, jokes, and art. That these extra details support the foreground material is a huge bonus, and a very good sign that you WILL get better with time and practice. That you're starting out at such a high level of enjoyable goodness already is also nice.

So... uh... keep it up, won't you?

Wow thanks everyone for the influx of positive comments!

Jimor - You have no idea how good your comments make me feel, I've always been rather insecure about my work and tend to lose interest far too quickly, but comments like that and the others I'm starting to receive are giving me the impetus to stick with this! I repeat, thanks to all of you!

The 7th strip is done and below. I wanted to try and show some of the main characteristics of the characters in this strip, and I hope it does at least a little bit.

Unfortunately, your comic is terrible. Sorry to be so harsh, but I have to be truthful.

... (pause) ...

Just kidding! ;) Did I scare you there for a second? What an awesome strip. I'm anxiously awaiting the next installment. Frankly, I think your artwork is incredible. In fact, it barely looks like a stick figure comic at all. All you'd have to do is change the arms/hands to have some width and it would just be a regular comic. You're already doing it with the fists; I bet it wouldn't be hard to do it permanently. But then it wouldn't be an OOTS fancomic, so I guess you better keep it the way it is.

Also, Jenna's looking pretty hot!

Hehe yeah, I noticed the grammar mess-up shortly after I posted, but I've only just corrected it this morning... and Ichneumon, I'm going to try one on imageshack when my account activates, see whether there's any difference, because it does seem to be a problem for most people! And Chorpler, you're a mean-meany head for teasing me like that, but thanks for the good comment afterwards!

No, "used to" is correct. In speech, the 'd' and 't' run together so apparently many people don't know the 'd' is there.

I like this strip, but I have a couple things I would change:

1. The Females' Expressions - The eyes are a bit large and the hairlines are low, and its hard to tell what expression the women are making.

2. The Word Balloons - The dialogue is good but a bit bland. Also, since 99% of everyone reads left to right, top to bottom, many conversations can be hard to follow (especially this latest one and Strip 5).

One more thing: I love the names Drake and Jenna Church, but I feel like "Beech" and "Ailish" are a little uninspired. Nothing you can do about this though.

Overall I like where this is headed and I am eager to see more. Keep going!

Heh, apologies to all for neglecting this for so long. I had a few things going on that stopped me from doing the art on this, and that combined with my inability to draw the scenes how I imagined them in my head caused me to stop in frustration.

But my art has improved now, and I feel more able to continue, especially with these other webcomics encouraging me to start up again. From the next strip I will be using my more recent art style, which will hopefully make drawing quicker and easier to edit. We'll see how it goes, I know that there are better things to read on here right now, but if I get enough interest I'm going to continue this.

I like the new art for everyone, with a couple of exceptions.

I liked Jenna's hair, boots, & chain mail top from the old style. Everyone else is an improvement.

I especially like Ailish's new sword, the symbol on her dress & Drake's "dress" is cool.

banjo1985
2007-11-30, 08:50 AM
Hmmm, well mixed opinions so far on the change of art-style. I suppose I should explain why I have changed it.

When I first started the comic I had no real idea of character boards, backgrounds, facial expressions and character poses, I just had an idea for a story and some cool looking characters. I soon found out that the way I had drawn the characters made it very difficult to pose them how they should be, and on Jenna in particular it was almost impossible to get a good facial expression because of how close he fringe was to her eyes. That hair was also hell to deal with, it warped everytime I needed it to move slightly, and it took an absolute age to do a comic, just worked on the characters themselves.

But the way I have them set up now they are a lot more flexible. I can make the expressions I want on their faces, and pose them how I want to, where before I would struggle for hours. That was part of the frustration that caused me to stop in the first place. Making the comic is now easier, quicker, looks better, and most importantly, is a lot more fun for me to work on.
So that's why it has changed, and also why it will stay that way. I'm sorry if it causes some people to stop reading, but I need to keep the change for the sake of my own sanity. Plus I actually think it looks clearer and neater.

That said, I may move Jenna slightly back to how she was in the next strip, as most people have said they preferred her before. I might change her armour a bit, and look to put her fringe back in, I'll see what I can do, as long as it doesn't make her any harder to work with.

Anyway, enough of me waffling on, the next strip is done...and a day early too! See, told you it wouldn't be three months :smallamused:

Next strip could be up on Sunday, though Monday or Tuesday are more likely.

Thanks to you all for supporting me as I try to start the strip up again, it's really appreciated

Banjo, I love the new comic, especially the back ground man and its death:smallbiggrin:

Btw, I like the new style on Jenna(the front part of her hair), I thought it kept making eyes sad...

Biogs for the four main characters are now up on the first post. Note soem minor changes to Jenna, the green armour star is back, and the boots are a little more pointy. More changes will occur if I can get them right. Biogs of Vortigern and Cal will follow when I have time.

Note that very little is said about any of the characters pasts. This is something I want to visit in the comic, Jenna's in particular, for her past plays a very important part in the story.

V - Well yes, the information given in the biogs is basic stuff that could easily be identified from the comics so far. More imformation will come in future comics, I won't be revealing it in biogs or any other methods outside the comics. And no character will get a biog picture until they are seen in the main comic.

All the biogs are for are people new to the comic after it's long absence.

Maybe you can instead of plainly dumb the information on your first post in text, build it up in the story, let it reveal itself?

Anyhow, this strip hasn't took me as long as I thought, so I'm going to post it straight away. 4 comics in 8 days...boy I'm not going to be able to keep this up!

Anyhow, this is the first combat strip so far, the first chance you get to see how effective the team are etc. Now, one thing I've never been able to do very well is the sensation of movement, such as when someone is makes an attack or get's knocked back etc. I think I've managed to this to an extent in this comic, but any tips on how to do it better would be appreciated.

Anyway, here it is:

I like the way you date your updates. It's always made more sense, in my opinion, to put the day before the month. To avoid confusion (I'm american), I usually write out the month though (3Dec07).

Also, you should always do what is easiest for you, before pandering to any one person. Anyone who truly enjoys the comic will stay as long as you don't stray too far from what originally got our attention in the first place. Even then some may stay, if the change is good for them.

So basically, keep up the good work. I love it so far.:elan:

*clearing throat* Ahem... (Insert Bardic Knowledge Check here) :elan:

Aluminum

1812, coined by Sir Humphry Davy (1778-1829), from L. alumen "alum" (see alum). Davy originally called it alumium (1808), then amended this to aluminum, which remains the U.S. word, but British editors in 1812 further amended it to aluminium, the modern preferred British form, to better harmonize with other element names (sodium, potassium, etc.).

"Aluminium, for so we shall take the liberty of writing the word, in preference to aluminum, which has a less classical sound." -"Quarterly Review," 1812

Seems to me it was just a matter of wanting to sound grandiose, neh?

As far as Jaws is concerned, I suspect a rather nifty Familiar-Delivered Touch Attack spell might be in the works. At least, that is what I would do...

Actually, I think we kind of did, objective-wise. (Our goal was to be our own country, England's was to keep us as a colony, now we've got the USA.) 1812, on the other hand... I'll concede that.

My advice? Don't do a webcomic. It's insanely hard, and you will feel you have to meet a number of comics per month and it's hell.

It doesn't help that I have to make quite a lot changes to colours and stuff in this one. I'll do my best to get it up as soon as possible, but with essentially one hand I'm not sure how quick that will be :smallfrown:

Get well, Banjo. Focus on yer own health first, then the comic. Don't overtax yerself over this.

We forumites are always here. Don't kill yourself over updating the thread. Or you could post a filler strip! Or prepare some in advance.

Hmm, i should do that too.

Meh, bad wrist or no bad wrist it doesn't seem to be stopping me  quick trip to the doctors shows it's just sprained and bruised. I'd love to be able to get a buffer of strips up, but to be honest I don't have enough time and don't work quick enough...having a full time job, a girlfriend and a RPG campaign to run stops me doing as much as I'd like to.

I've been working on strip 20,couldn't help myself. It is now finished!

As always comments are welcome, it's nice to know that there are still people reading this with the amount of good webcomics that are on here.

Humourous extras always help

The exposition looks to be a good show, so I'm very much in want to read it

Whitefeather is in my top 4 favourite comics on this board. To be P.C., I won't tell you what's in what place though. :smallwink:

This comic gets better and better. Of course, if it gets any better. One would have to take lengths. :smallannoyed::smalltongue:

A bluff? Well that remains to be seen...just keep that warforged away from me :smallamused:

Anyhow, the wrist is recovering, but I'm still not 100% so the art on this one might be a bit off. Anyhow, here's the next strip...wow we're up to #21!

Aw young Jenna

That's actually kind of creepy. Reminds me of a Western I saw once with Tommy Lee Jones.

Hey, in the character bios, for Beech,

" Beech has knwon Jenna all her life, and see's her as a kind of big sister, despite being six years her senior."

Shouldn't that be "known" not "knwon"?

What followed seems obvious...

The demon is Cal's father. Which explains why Jenna would be so young a mother, and why Cal -- being half-fiend or whatever -- is such a horrible kid, and why the bad guy kidnapped him. There's probably some "Dark Messiah, Chosen of Darkness, as Prophesied in the Dark Prophecy of Darkness" story going on.

Yes...yes it is

But I've had a busy few weeks, and I can't see things calming down for a while yet.

However, I will be making another strip as soon as I get the chance.

That makes the 'job' offer from the demon in the bushes quite nasty...

Well, if he's a demon then he's risking a lot to be active on the Material plane. In theory, a demonic heir such as a half-demon child could serve as his pawn without him risking his own neck at the hands of the Celestials.

... and creates a nice background and adds some motivations. Still, what does the evil cleric need the mom for?

very nice fan comic!
