The following letter was sent by Forest Martial Weslen Gavirk to all of the local authorities in Nirmathas, who then resent the letter to those they deemed capable of the task described:

To whom it may concern,

I am writing multiple instances of this letter to every elected village official in Nirmathas. As you already know, Molthune in the south wants to take away our hard-earned freedom, and our port city of Tamran is regularly attacked by merrows and skum, but these attacks have grown more intense in recent years, and there are now even reports from some citizens of zombies stalking the land, especially on our coasts and in our swamps. I will be in Tamran to personally interview all who answer this letter, and those I select will be tasked with going to Kyonin with a very important delivery, which will hopefully gain their support and help us beat back the freedom-hating enemies that want to tell us how to live our lives and oppress us.

Sincerely,
Forest Martial Weslen Gavirk

Background skills are on

Commonplace Guns: While still expensive and tricky to wield, early firearms are readily available. Instead of requiring the Exotic Weapon Proficiency feat, all firearms are martial weapons. Early firearms and their ammunition cost 25% of the amounts listed in this book, but advanced firearms and their ammunition are still rare and cost the full price to purchase or craft.

Note: Undercommon, abolith, and infernal are useful bonus languages to take.

Nirmathas is a struggling country that only recently freed itself from the grasp of the imperialistic nation of Molthune to the south, which continues to try to reclaim it. The people of Nirmathas are proud of their freedom, liberty, and self-sufficiency, and are continually on guard for incursions by their southern neighbor.

The city of Tamran is a ramshackle city, especial for the capital city of a nation. It is built on piers and pilings over the marshlands at the mouth of the Marideth River, where it meets the banks of Lake Encarthan. The city is connected by a web of bridges, ramps and causeways, and a flotilla of barges and skiffs, and all of the buildings are made from wood. Due to the fact Tamran is still standing after its violent history it is seen as a symbol of Nirmathas tenacity and resourcefulness. Considering Nirmathas is a country at war, Tamran seems to lack any sort of defences including a city wall but this is in fact its best defence.

Professional Postman: You perhaps are the son or daughter of a professional mailman, but regardless of whether or not this is the case, you have traveled around the region delivering mail and are wiser for it. You begin play with a +1 bonus to knowledge (geography) checks, a +10 bonus to land speed, and the ability to cast Know Direction, as the spell, as a SLA. If not already a class skill, knowledge (geography), is now a class skill for you.

Aspiring Diplomat: When you heard Forest Marshal Weslen Gavirk, the newly elected leader of Nirmathas, needed somebody to deliver a package from Tamran, across Lake Encarthan, all the way to Greengold in Kyonin, you jumped at the opportunity to be the diplomatic envoy that would hopefully strengthen your fledgling nation against the attacks by both the merrows from the lake and the Molthune tyrants in the lands to the south. Knowing how important diplomacy is, you begin with a +1 trait bonus to all diplomacy checks that stacks with any other trait bonuses to diplomacy you acquire, and diplomacy is a class skill for you.

Champion of Freedom: You desire freedom from all dogma, and even the chaotic good gods are too restrictive in their tenets for you. For you, your desire is to see everybody live as equals, and to be free to do whatever they desire as long as nobody is harmed. You believe in progress and revile ideas like tradition or obedience. When you heard a few positions were availiable to visit Kyonin, you jumped at the opportunity, for while the elven kingdom has some traces of order, freedom is valued there far more than in most human nations. You hope your visit to this enlightened nation can give you ideas to return to Nirmathas and run for office, so delivering this package is just an excuse. As such, when confronted with divine magic, you treat the DC of the spell as 2 points lower than if you lacked this trait. This benefit stacks with any similar benefits gained from another trait or feat. In order to take this trait, you must be non-lawful and non-evil, and not worship a diety or cast divine spells.

Ferryman: You've worked as the captain of one of the Ferries that transport goods and people around Lake Encarthan and are about to retire. You heard the Forest Marshal in Nirmathas needed a package delivered, so you decided to do one last run before you began a life of adventure, your childhood dream. You have already started studying skills that would make you useful as an explorer beyond the lake, but for your age, you will be less skilled than much younger adventurers. You begin the game as old for your race, but years of working the ferry has kept you somewhat more spry than your peers, so you only take a -2 penalty to your physical stats rather than the usual -3. This penalty and bonus stacks, however, with the aged oracle curse, in which case you add the bonuses and penalties together. Also, profession (sailor) is now a class skill and you recieve an additional +1 bonus that stacks with any other bonuses you may have. Finally, you must take an the Expert NPC class as your first level, but you may still choose your second level as normal.

Liberty's Acolyte: You worship a chaotic good diety and it is your life's mission to free those enslaved by undeath by slaying their possessed corpses. One day, you will be able to resurrect them and return them to true life, but first, you must unlock the greater secrets of the faith. When you heard the Forest Marshal needed help delivering a package to Kyonin, you were thrilled, as many great temples to your diety are in that location and you now have an opportunity to learn greater divine secrets. You gain a +2 bonus on knowledge (religion) checks, and this bonus stacks with any other bonus to the skill. You must worship a chaotic good diety and be a cleric to take this trait.

Flight is treated as any other type of movement, thus you need not make fly checks under normal conditions. (Windstorms are the only time a check may come up.)

Paladins use this archetype:

If your character has a tail, they qualify for the Tail Terror feat.
