You, as a real person in the real world, suddenly gain a non-epic, random spell/power from the SRD as an at-will spell-like ability (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/specialAbilities.htm#spellLikeAbilities). You're treated as having the minimum caster/manifester level necessary to produce the effect. Assume you discover your random ability at a convenient place and time, and nobody else knows about it. You also don't know if anybody else has powers like you. How would it affect your life?

Below is a numbered list of all non-epic SRD spells and powers, if you want to randomize your selection. Spells range from 1-625, and powers range from 626-912. For the sake of discussion, you're not limited to a single roll, but assume only one spell/power per hypothetical scenario.

I think we can basically immediately discount any powers that specifically and only interact with other powers, yes? Antimagic field, dispel X and such? And are we assuming the alignment system applies to our world, because many effects depend on those too?

If I had to pick, I would definitely go astral projection. You, and anyone you care about, can live indefinitely (your real body is kept in stasis and thus doesn't age) and you can all go around doing whatever you want without risk of dying from mundane means, because you will just return to your real body where you can be astrally projected again.

Edit: Actually rolled, got 391, planar binding..... Hmmm............ I don't have magic circle or dimensional anchor, sooooo.... I guess I'd better figure out an alternative solution to that...

I came up with 354.

Well, Meteor Storm isn't completely useless, but a career in demolition doesn't really appeal to me.

Okay so here's what you do. You pick up a recent science textbook and gain as frighteningly detailed a personal knowledge of carbon nanotubes as you can, then you find the biggest source of carbon you can. Then you use the resulting greatest abundance of super material the world has ever known to construct a space elevator. Then you make all the money undercutting every mission to space while simultaneously shooting the species several rungs up the tech tree.

Huh. 828, power leech. Completely useless: my power reserve would be 0, and nobody else would have any pp to leech anyhow. Let's roll again...

739, energy ray. Now we're talking! 25' rays of fire, cold, electricity or sonic damage. The damage isn't great, but an average shot still deals 1d6+1 cold damage, enough to disable most people in two or three shots. Still, I want one more try at a more amazing power.

And it's 241, greater glyph of warding. 5d6 acid, cold, electricity, fire or sonic damage in a permanent-duration package, Search DC 31 to detect. So I've been promoted from 'small handgun' to 'letter bomber'? How charming. I'm going to roll until I get something useful.

350, meld into stone. Okay, that's got to be good. Except that it's really only good for hiding inside solid stone, which is fairly rare. I suppose it would be useful for smuggling or espionage. Maybe something less suited to terrorism, RNG?

133, desecrate. RNG did not get the message.

552, sunburst. Alright. Instant kill on fungi! Dispel darkness spells of 9th level or lower! And: 15d6 damage to undead, in a long-range 80' radius burst. If there is a wightocalypse (and there will be, with all these random powers), I'll be ready for it. I suppose that'll do, for now.

The best power would be greater metamorphosis, of course.

151...Diminish Plants...Okay, reroll.

402...Power Word Stun...That seems nice, would certainly be useful in a fight, but...I'll try again.

235...Glibness would be useful if I made a habit of lying, but I don't, so...reroll

298...Drawmiji's Instant Summons could definitely be nice...I'd certainly consider this one.

158...I'm pretty sure Dispel Evil is useless in this world, so...next!

610...Water Breathing would actually be very useful...I could infinitely "hold my breath" and spy decently, but it is already replicated by a real device...

806...Mind Seed...not so much, though it might be marginally useful.

141...Detect Poison? Now that might be good...

223...Freedom? Really?

850...Read Thoughts...Ahh, finally, a nice one.

If I could choose I'd probably go with either Wish or True Mind Switch.

I rolled 478, which is greater shadow conjuration. I got: 161 - Dispel Magic.
An extremely variable one. It's completely useless if I'm the only one who gets powers this way, but it's incredibly useful if a lot of people get them. I think setting myself up as an effect-removal specialist would be very profitable, but also very dangerous - a lot of people (such as the ones who got mind-control powers) would want me dead, and you can't counter-spell a gun.

Second one: 493 - Shrink Item.
Not the flashiest, but it's a pretty good one I think. Not only personally convenient (carry a full set of supplies in my pocket), but since they last five days, I could sell them. Perhaps more importantly, it appears to put objects in stasis while they're shrunken, which could potentially be very useful for science/manufacturing uses, and if nothing else would allow delivering food that was perfectly fresh a long distance away. Oh, and it'd make a hell of a utility belt, but I'm no Batman.

Both of these have the problem that utilizing them would entail people finding out I had them, so if I was the only one with powers I'd be very wary about that - don't want to end up taken to Area 51 for research, or killed by somebody who thinks I'm the anti-christ. With the second I could at least shrink stuff for my own use, if I was careful about it.

Edit: One more! 206 - Fire Trap.
There are a lot of uses for a small explosive that doesn't involve any chemicals or electronics, but most of them are things I don't want to be involved in. At least this one is a "manufacturing" power that doesn't require me being anywhere hazardous to use it.

Entangling Ectoplasm. Well, it lasts for 30s at base duration. I suppose I could improve my accuracy with practice. But what use could I put it to? It isn't life-changing, that's for sure. I could use it to prank people, maybe? Maybe I could help out with people who throw self-damaging fits, though I don't think Entangled condition would prevent hitting anything in reach.

Oh yeah! Limited Wish first roll. I would make money to start, pretty quickly, but try not to rouse suspicion. Fabricate and Unseen Servant/Crafter are good for this. I would tell my boyfriend and we would finish the renovations on our house and his hangar in short order. Since Fabricate via SLA has no mat cost, that is practically True Creation which is awesome. I would build a lovely garden and help my family to wealth with beautiful homes that will blend with nature.

Once my family are set. I think I would build up some serious defenses and try to emerge as a spiritual leader. I would help as many as I could, free healthcare, food, and water Create Device traps are easy for War Fabricate. Put them in every clinic and homeless shelter(or roaming around Sanctum Animate Objects and Permanency). I would definitely get political, don't want to start a flame war, but suffice to say things need to change. I would not be totalitarian about it, but I would try and be as aggressive as I am able(which is far from my natural state).

Once I've(hopefully) put this to a calm place politically, I would start with correcting the environment. If I could research variations of the Feather Token: Tree for other species I would do that with roaming, slightly intelligent automatons to replant forests and promote growth. Atmo scrubbers would be a lot more challenging, but I think doable with some clever usage of Purify Food and Drink. Fabricate a pair of perpetual Fimbulwinter machines whose sole purpose is to freeze the ice caps.

And after all of my humanitarian endeavors are complete? Retire to the moon and terraform her. I would keep tabs on the earth and my machines, but for the most part I would want to just relax and create without limit.

So, I got Id Insinuation (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/idInsinuation.htm). At first glance, this seems of somewhat limited utility. Useful for avoiding fights and confrontations, I guess; great at sowing chaos in my life, if that was what I wanted.

However, I could use this to create trouble for certain people. Attending political rallies could be a start, potentially swinging elections the way I want by making the opposition look unstable. Perhaps even running for office myself. More simply, I could get some front-row seats to a boxing or MMA fight and put down some bets, and swing the tide of the fight in my favor. Or get near enough to some celebrity to provoke him to fight me, then sue him.

Over time, I could be rich, famous, and powerful. It would still take some planning, but not a bad option all things considered.

.... Not sure what to do with a spell that deals basically an instakill (assuming level one commoner baseline) to theoretically twenty people (assuming max CL) within 75 feet.... Be the assassin.

Or... just get some guns and do the same thing?

That's the problem with damage dealing effects in real life. (1) Most people have no use for them and (2) if you want to kill people, there are already lots of ways to do so.

And one might think, "Oh, but this is an invisible magical effect so nobody will know you're using it, unlike a gun." But actually, that's not true because D&D rules specify that everyone can tell you're doing something and they can even use Spellcraft to figure out exactly what you're doing. Maybe people in the real world don't have Spellcraft, but if they notice a guy doing "something weird" and then nearby people die, they'll probably put two and two together. So, you might as well be using guns.

I mean, I guess having an ability like this would mean that you have a weapon that can't be taken away and you can never run out of ammo. But that is of limited usefulness imho. If I had this ability and was using it, all I foresee happening is that I get put in jail... and then a bunch of people in jail get killed... and then I get put in solitary... and then that's it.

Why do you need to be in the ER? True rez works pretty much regardless of time or state of the body. Just read the obits in the paper every morning and decide who deserves to walk away.

Even at CL1, you can rez people who have been dead for 10 years. Bring back Carrie Fisher and David Bowie. Bring back every performer you like. Bring back influential politicians who died before their time, or activists killed by oppressive regimes. Keep philanthropists like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett alive every time they die. One of the best ways to change the world is to help people who are already changing the world do it for longer.

The_Iron_Lord

Yeah, if you get true resurrection, the way I would suggest handling it would be to find a few bereaved rich people to start, and offer to bring back their loved ones for, say, $10 million in cash, each. Get a small group of them together and offer to do one of them without payment up front (with them agreeing to pay for it if you deliver), and then get the others to pay up front.

With somewhere between 20 and 100 million USD, you can hire yourself some security and PR/marketing assistance as well as legal representation, and go public. You'll want a significant administrative staff to manage vetting and the like, but your goal is to set up your work day so that your staff has a list of names and sufficient info to unambiguously identify them (day of birth, place of birth, day/place of death, "Mr. So-and-so's Firstborn Daughter," whatever). Your staff will be vetting for whether or not the person is somebody you want to bring back at ANY price. (I imagine you don't want to be resurrecting Adolf Hitler or Jack the Ripper, for example. Nor any lesser-known but still horrible people you would believe the world is better off without.) They will also be in charge of managing the bidding for priority.

You will decide on a number of names on the list you will resurrect each day. I suggest between 6 and 20, with time between rezes to talk to any family members who want to come in, or to deal with any last-minute emergency bids for "now now now," or what have you. Keep your day leisurely so you don't wear out.

I mean, you can do this once every 10 minutes, so you could do 48 per day if you worked an 8-hour day, but if you keep your list short enough that you are only working a half-day, that leaves you plenty of time for any pro-bono or spontaneous work you want to do.

As for why you're being so "mercenary" about it? You have to prioritize somehow, and making sure this unique, unbelievably desirable service doesn't get you imprisoned by some nefarious forces to use you for their own ends will cost money. Because of the 10 minute casting time, you can't just conjure up an army of dead heroes to rescue you on a whim, so you can't use it to get yourself out of a held-prisoner situation on its own.

With this wealth, you preserve your independence and you are free to work as much as you want, restoring as many lives as you have the energy to do. Keeping it to a 4-hour paid-for work day leaves you lots of time for any altruistic work you want to engage in.

Oh, speaking of security, you probably want to have a stipulation in your security guards' contracts that any of them who give their lives to save you will be brought back before you do any paid-for work. Maybe with some "extremis" exceptions, but the gist should be there. (You're more concerned with them and their co-workers believing it than the legal enforcement of it; showing good faith will be more important than having legal ramifications if you don't.) This will ensure they feel a great deal of loyalty to keeping you alive and free, that they have little fear of giving their lives to save yours, and also incentivize all the very, very wealthy and powerful people who have paid for a spot on your list to aid in insuring that your security forces have no NEED to give their lives in their duties to you.

This will generally both maximize your lifestyle and freedom, and your ability to do as much good with this power as you wish to.

You could do it ahead of time! You won't be getting Hector of Troy anytime soon, and Simo Hayha died of old age so you can't have the White Death as a hired gun, but plenty of brave and skilled soldiers died in battle at a young age and would be excellent minions.

You could also make sure that Queen Elizabeth II never dies, just to spite Charles.

Hmm. Let's see. I'm going to roll three times - once for spells, once for powers, once for spells/powers.

First, for spells: 1d625 = 379: Pass Without Trace.

Second, for powers: 1d287+625 = (62)+625 = 692: Demoralize.

Third, full list: 1d912 = 442: Remove Fear.

Okay. Well, PWT is useless; being untrackable is pointless when digital cameras everywhere can still trace your image. And RF is useless unless you're some kind of emergency worker, police officer, or similar; you're rarely going to encounter a terrified person who needs the help. Which leaves Demoralize.

So, on the first question, what would I do with this power? Win. It's a psionic power that fills everybody within 30 feet with self-doubt. They're Shaken, imposing a penalty on skill checks and saves. Basically, it gives me a bonus to all of my social skills, since nobody is going to be resisting or refusing me in that state. And it's psionic, which means that I can suppress any outward signs that I just hacked your brain. I would simply go where I wanted to go, talk to whomever to whom I wanted to talk, and convince them to agree to things. Favorable loan rates? Legal settlements? Raises? Heck, push through legislation? Yes, yes, yes, oh yes.

Find out that someone has that power? Pay them to use it. Would they use their power against me? They'd try. Maybe even succeed. But I'd give them no reason to. Take the money, do what I ask, and you can have more money. Unlike me, this other person in question is unlikely to be an Evil Mastermind. My plans, their talents? World, oyster.

I'm basically the evil witch from Narnia.

I guess I could sell myself as a hyper-realistic sculptor or, since you don't age in crystalline form, I could start a cryonics institute. Though I don't think having the ability to Crystallize let's you de-crystallize people.

If everyone else is rolling 3, Ill roll 2 more.

217-forbiddence. Im not familiar with this. Ill go look it up in a bit.
Oh. Oh my. That would be wicked indeed. I could drop one of these in a subway tunnel, couldnt I? Or on a highway? But to what end, when Im not sure of my own alignment? Surely this spell alone, used in such a way would drop me straight to CE in seconds. So the only people it wouldnt hurt are the ones it shouldnt.

287-inflict critical wounds. Wow. Umm, okay. Mine is the killing touch! Id use it. I know I would. I couldnt NOT use it. Heck, I bet Red Fel would pay me big bucks to go shake a few hands :smallamused:

Choose wisely. I don't think the authorities are going to let you be connected to two seemingly accidental deaths with no apparent cause that just so happened to occur right as you touched them.

If I got to pick: Shapechange, if I could turn into 3.5 monsters, otherwise Wish. Both for pretty obvious reasons.

Randomly, I got:
588: True Creation. Oooooooooh boy. Become impossibly wealthy pretty much immediately. 15 cubic feet is a decent amount, but I assume the 10 minute casting time remains, so I could produce the entire coal production of the United States in 50 8 hour days of work. That might be a good idea actually to keep my wealth plausible, take out a loan and "speculate" on some worthless start up land, seed it with natural resources, and resell it. Maybe buy land that was already mined and say "hey, check out all this X resource you guys missed!" Or maybe just open my own printer ink company.

I'm sure there's more valuable resources you could play with, but I'd rather not immediately increase the worlds supply of exotic elements ten fold. Then again, once I'm secure in my unlimited wealth, substances that are of particular scientific interest might have a sharp increase in supply.

356: Mind Fog. Honestly, can't think of a great use for this. Sense motive is wisdom based, I suppose, so I could bluff people really well if they fail the save against the fog. It's a bad spell in game and doesn't really shine in the real world either. Maybe open a club, and drop this in there under the guise of a smoke generator? I'd think people with garbage wisdom checks would probably buy a lot more of whatever you're selling. Then again, they're just as likely to just bump into more stuff and suck at stitching up wounds.

342: Worst of my rolls. Really only has combat applications, and giving people +1 AC for 5 hours is not the best of tricks. Getting any benefit out of this pretty much requires that I prove my talents are functional to an outside entity, and telling the US government I can mystically make a smallish group of soldiers get hit 5% less of the time is likely to get me dissected more than trusted. I guess I could go independent and have a somewhat statistically more survivable street gang?

My random rolls:

418: Protection from spells - Useless in a world with no magic.

20: Antipathy - Pretty niche. I guess I could use it as a protection service, but that's about it.

8: Alter self - Pretty good, actually. It's not as good as polymorph, but the power and versatility are still pretty amazing.

...and I think I'll change my earlier answer (wish) to agree with other people around here: shapechange. So much better, it's not even funny, since it allows you to do tons of stuff, and tosses [Su] wishes on top of it all, for extra awesome.

It's much more amusing to make everyone in a 480ft radius centred on yourself think they're going insane

It's almost like Twitter, but directly uploaded into your head, interrupting your thoughts, and it can't be traced back to me

In other words "hello, is this thing on? Buckets [or other random word]. That is all."

Shades, I'm not kidding you I rolled Shades. So that's an 80% chance I can Greater Teleport, with unlimited retries? Not bad, not bad at all.

There's just the part of me that's too lawful to cross borders illegally. Though, technically I wouldn't be crossing them...

There's gotta be more to this. Planar Binding won't work, as I don't have access to Magic Circle spells.

There are 3 major classifications of spells: destructive, buffing and utility.

The destructive spells would be dangerous, sure. Someone able to blast nonstop magic missiles, for example, would be quite potent indeed. And a fireball would certainly be a force to be reckoned with. But obviously abusing such a power would result in a swift death. And it would be easy to see where such a power came from. It would be no different than you having a grenade launcher or (for magic missile) a high precision rifle. You'd be dealt with quickly for using such a power.

The less obvious ones, however, would be much much more difficult for authorities to deal with. Psychic crush, for example, would basically be "I look at someone and their ears start to bleed." No trace, no evidence and no case. It might even seem natural causes. Still, the destructive power of your ability does not protect you. You'd make a superb assassin, and could reap massive rewards. But other than that, you couldn't really utilize it. It wouldn't help you rise to power because any idiot with a gun who managed to surprise you would be your end.

Physical and mental buffing spells would be useful in every day life, but would not exactly help you change your life. I suppose you could become a world renown trainer. After all, if you cast bear's endurance on a bunch of physical athletes, you could give any sports team an incredible edge... and that would be worth a lot of money.

Protective buffing spells would be useful for military. Casting mage armor on 500 soldiers, for example, making them significantly harder to kill could turn the tide of any battle. You could make some serious cash that way I suppose, but once it became known, you'd either become a target, or forced to become a protection spawner held on the base with no access to the outside world.

But utility spells is where the real power lies. Invisibility has so many uses, it would take hours to write them all. Fly? The sky's the limit. Teleportation is one of the penultimate goals of all of civilization. Summoning and binding would make you virtually unstoppable. If I had a power like that, I could pretty much do anything.

Segev

You could do it ahead of time! You won't be getting Hector of Troy anytime soon, and Simo Hayha died of old age so you can't have the White Death as a hired gun, but plenty of brave and skilled soldiers died in battle at a young age and would be excellent minions.

You could also make sure that Queen Elizabeth II never dies, just to spite Charles.
Old age still makes it impossible to bring people back. And you'd have to be careful resurrecting soldiers; they have no reason to serve you, after all. They don't know you, they don't know how you brought them back, and they don't even know THAT you did. They just know they woke up in your house in a world that has weird stuff all around.

For fun, though, you could bring back JFK, sit him down in front of as balanced a selection of news as you can, and ask him what he REALLY thinks of the state of the nation, the Democrat party, and the Republican party. It'd be interesting to hear from an actual person who people often SAY "He'd be spinning in his grave if he knew X" about.

MLK, JR. would be a good choice, too.

Shades, I'm not kidding you I rolled Shades. So that's an 80% chance I can Greater Teleport, with unlimited retries? Not bad, not bad at all.

There's just the part of me that's too lawful to cross borders illegally. Though, technically I wouldn't be crossing them...

Eh, I admit that despite not wanting to violate laws, I probably would hop borders without regard to them with such a power, and do it largely unthinkingly.

Summon monster VII can call up a Vrock, which is almost as good as planar binding. Strangely, trap the soul is Summoning, so would work. You don't even need the gem; it's illusory. But you can 80% likely trap a victim in an illusory gem. And that's if they make the will save to disbelieve.

Mordenkainen's magnificent mansion means you never have to worry about shelter. Sure, it's illusory, but you can willingly fail your save to disbelieve, and so the 80% real food even works just fine for you!

Phase door lets you walk through walls.

Shades of a wall of iron is, hilariously, an instantaneous duration effect that creates an illusion of an 80% real iron wall. The illusion, having been created instantaneously, never goes away. It's just THERE. Same applies to wall of stone if you need the earthy look for some reason.

Leomund's secret chest is also summoning, and again, not needing material components means you conjure the illusion of both expensive foci as part of the shades. And they still can store real objects away for you. It's not like objects get Will (Disbelief) saves.

Minor creation has all the usual uses. And since it's being done via shades, it's 1 standard action casting time rather than a full minute. So casual conjuration of whatever incidental items you need for your comfort.

Phantom steed, at your caster level, is an AMAZING travel spell.

You even have a trap in the form of sepia snake symbol at your disposal, though admittedly it's limited use.

Unseen servant is always nice for convenience. It's almost like having TK that you don't have to concentrate on.

And mage armor is worth spending six seconds twice a day to always have up. The extra security against random harm shouldn't be overlooked.

And that's ignoring all the direct combat spells, most of which are battlefield control that, if you wanted to go for that lifestyle, could make you a tactical hero to whatever organization you worked with. Imagine solid fog in a riot situation, for a particularly peaceful example.

Rolling twice more (once for just spells, once for just powers), I got lesser telepathic bond (which I can't find the spell version of) and Claws of the Beast (which...is rather lame).

I don't get much in the way of cool stuff, it seems. :smallfrown:

I mean, Claws of the Beast could be used for intimidation, I guess? But I hardly live - nor want to live - a combat-heavy lifestyle.

If lesser telepathic bond works similarly to the psionic version, then it's maybe an hour (10 min./level, but I don't know the CL because I don't know what level the spell version is) of telepathy with one other person. No animals, since Int 6+ is a requirement. This isn't BAD, and I'd probably use it, but it's hardly life-changing. The full version isn't much better. All day is more convenient and many at once allows for better comm tower duties without having to serve as a relay. Since it's at will, even the lesser one is okay for casual "I want to talk to that guy telepathically" use.

I'm going to roll until I get one I see something really cool I could do with it, now:

577. Touch of Idiocy --no thanks; making people dumb isn't usually helpful in making my life more fun
89. Confusion --really? Ugh, see above.
254. Haste --despite this being an OMG amazing spell in D&D, it's only "nice" IRL. Good for doing better at twitch video gaming, maybe?
499. Sleet Storm -- :smallsigh:
874. Strength of My Enemy --See "touch of idiocy"
880. Telekinetic Force --NOW we're talking. This is only the "sustained force" version of the spell, but 250 lbs. of TK lift is still pretty nice. There is a lot I could do with this, despite requiring Concentration to maintain it.

Only took me 8 rolls to get something halfway decent. Oy.

Just for kicks and grins, one more roll got me 144 - detect snares and pits. Ouch.

Not lying my first roll was 359. Miracle. I win... I pass myself off as a god, start my own religion and take over the world.

My second roll was 619, wind wall. I would get a plot of land, set up a wind generator, and build my own power company.

third roll: 653 call to mind. I could actually use that. I would begin reading dozens upon dozens of tutorial books. I'd become the greatest jack of all trades in existence, and would acquire half a dozen doctorates.

In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.
With a handshake, you can do some pretty major damage to pretty much anyone's ability to negotiate or even realize they should be negotiating. You would make a comfortable living as the sleaziest used car salesman in the world. Or pretty much any other profession that involves in person dealing.

254. Haste --despite this being an OMG amazing spell in D&D, it's only "nice" IRL. Good for doing better at twitch video gaming, maybe?

Doubling your land speed would be a pretty good way to shatter pretty much every human speed record. The other benefits are less interesting unless you're a competitive archer or some kind of martial artist.

499. Sleet Storm -- :smallsigh:

Sleet Storm blocks all sight, including darkvision. This spell is actually pretty great for doing something illicit, provided you don't need to see too well yourself to do it.

I can think of hundreds of ways this would improve your life. Cleaning, shopping, eating, prep work... all done in half the time. Work output for any manual job doubled. As for criminal activity, you could pretty much outrun any pursuer. You could outrun a bus in most cities. You could use your increased speed to jump between many buildings.

And haste is a multi target spell.

Yes. For other people. Your relative time is still the same. Or rather, the same amount of time passes for you. It's why the original version, if memory serves, aged the recipient of the spell. So, sure, you'd clean your room faster and get on with things sooner - but it wouldn't save any time from your perspective.

Sure, you could outrun your pursuers. But video can be paused. If they know your face, it doesn't matter how fast you move - you can be located. And what do you accomplish by outrunning the bus or jumping across buildings anyway? Bragging rights?

Most security cameras have a capture rate of about a frame every second. A hasted person might actually pass through the zone being watched without being spotted at all, and if they are spotted, they are a blur. You've seen security footage of criminals who were regular non-hasted guys, and that stuff is hardly 4K 144fps 3D-video ready.

Except the spell doesn't actually enhance those things. It doubles or +30s land speed, whichever is less, gives a small bonus to a couple of d20 rolls, and grants an extra attack on a full attack. It doesn't let you complete any mundane task twice as fast.

RAW, sure. But we're stepping outside of rules and extrapolating how this would affect Joe Blow. I am quite certain that the haste spell would allow you to more quickly sweep the dining room, shelve groceries, etc.

Yes, you have to do as much work, and expend as many calories... but the amount of actual time would be decreased. Which means more relaxation time.

Sure, you could outrun your pursuers. But video can be paused. If they know your face, it doesn't matter how fast you move - you can be located.

Of course you could be located through ordinary means to do so... but most criminals are not hunted down via identification by video feed. And most criminals are smart enough to figure out where the video cameras are before they commit a crime. Major incidents that come down to a foot race, if the criminal is able to get away they will enjoy weeks, months even, before the next attempt to capture them.

And what do you accomplish by outrunning the bus or jumping across buildings anyway? Bragging rights?
Oh the hustles you could pull off.

Since haste is not a touch spell, you could do this from the sidelines without them even knowing. Sure, the quarterback and receiver are puzzled as heck at how slow everyone else is going, but they don't know WHY, nor that you did it. You could definitely try rigging games this way.

Do it to boxers, too: the guy you hasted would get one more blow per six seconds in. That's a potentially huge advantage.

Still, this is.......rigging sporting events. I guess making money dishonestly like this is beneficial, technically, especially since it'd be hard to catch you, but it's still kind-of unsatisfying and underwhelming. Barring making life-changing amounts of money, this doesn't really change my life much. (Life-changing amounts of money ARE nice, of course. Though IRL, I would be hesitant to rig sports for ethical reasons. Also, I'd have to be AT the sports. I suppose a few hours of tedium are worth huge payouts, but... meh.)

I think I'll do a few more rolls.

Roll No. 3: Expeditious Retreat
I can now walk and run twice as fast as normal? Useful, I'll grant, but there are already people who can walk and run twice as fast as I do, so not anything amazing.

Roll No. 4: Adapt Body
This is nice. I'll never suffer from a heat wave again, and I can adventure to some normally dangerous places with far less risk.

Roll No. 5: Control Winds
I probably won't be using the more destructive aspects (although they could come in handy, you never know), but I'll have cooling wind around myself as often as I like, which is really amazing in a tropical country like the one I live in.

Roll No. 6: Ghost Sound
Well, it is called Ghost Sound. I think I'll use it to frighten people.

Roll No. 7: Incendiary Cloud
Not going to be committing mass murder any time soon, so this is pretty useless to me.

Roll No. 8: Spiritual Weapon
I don't have much use for weapons, but it is a physical object the spell creates, so I suppose could get it to carry things for me.

Roll No. 9: Curse Water
I now have unholy water, which is useless against anything except evil outsiders and undead. I wonder how many the real world has of those?

Roll No. 10: Protection from Energy
Again, completely useless in everyday life. Or almost any aspect of life, really.

Roll No. 11: Spiritual Weapon
...

Roll No. 12: Leech Field
Yay! More uselessness!

Roll No. 13: Adapt Body
Same as Roll No. 4.

Roll No. 14: Ecto Protection
Why are there so many useless powers?

Roll No. 15: Disrupting Weapon
I'm actually amazed at the number of useless powers here.

Roll No. 16: Id Insinuation
Something actually useful. Now I can humiliate people at will.

I think I'll quit while I'm ahead.

No, expeditious retreat adds 30ft to your move speed, no matter what it was before. When you run, you move at 4 times your speed in 6 seconds. Even if you only had a movement rate of 20 feet per round, you'd be moving 200ft in those 6 seconds, which is about 10 meters per second. You're still not as fast as Usain Bolt, but you're really fast. Even hustling (two move actions per 6 seconds) you're doing 100 feet, which is 17.5 kilometers per hour, faster than a typical bicycle.

Murder? That spell creates life! It would also spread lycanthropy throughout the world. People would be gifted with a higher wisdom, DR, and a free fur coat! It could save lives. Rolled again, since last time was so kind to me.

264: Hide from Undead. Yay! Now I can go into haunted houses and spooky graveyards.

814: Psionic Minor Creation. It's at ML 1 because it's a level 1 power, but that's still 1 cubic foot of nonliving vegetable matter that lasts one hour and then disappears without a trace. So I could magically summon chocolate that disappears before it's digested, so I can eat infinity chocolate and never get fat. Or sell the magic diet chocolate as a service and make a fortune. Also made of plants: wine and beer, potato chips, french fries, tea, coffee. I'm my own cafe and restaurant, baby! Wood is also plant matter, so I can study woodworking and pull out toys for kids or fancy canes to look posh or something.

229: Geas/quest. This might be tricky, since it has a 10 minute casting time, but it allows no save. Still, I can send anyone I want on missions for up to 11 days. Since it's language-dependent, I think I have to actually say the command out loud, which is unfortunate for stealth purposes. I would also make a pretty great therapist, at least until the person's addiction/whatever overpowers the compulsion of the geas and they die. Oops!

888: Teleport trigger. Cool power, but "...You must know the psionic teleport power..." so it's useless to me! If that's allowed, I basically have "teleport but better" which is amazing for obvious reasons.

648: Body Purification. This is one of those "go work in a hospital" powers, or alternatively "do a whole bunch of drugs and then dodge the consequences" powers.

757: Fate of One. Reroll every save, attack, or skill check ever. How amazing is that?

I'd be decently happy with any of these except Hide from Undead, but infinity chocolate is my favourite.

That's fine. I will put it in a high density area like Manhattan. When it takes a fraction of a second to produce your goods, people can move very quickly. Naturally, it won't be a dine-in place. It doesn't need to be, we're winning based on volume.

(Best part is its at at-will ability, so I can rent out my ability cheap and make a living while helping people... unlesss the hospital is a jerk).

Wood is also plant matter, so I can study woodworking and pull out toys for kids or fancy canes to look posh or something.Psi-like ability MLs are always auto-boosted to your HD, so if you're higher than level 1, so is your psi-like.

I subscribe to the level 1 commoner worldview, so that's not guaranteed.

I don't know even one person who is an uneducated, starving animal herder or persistence farmer. Not one.

A commoner need not be any of those things.

A level 1 commoner can have 4 ranks in a Profession skill, representing a substantial degree of expertise. Even with average Wisdom, this commoner earns 14 gold pieces per week of work, presumably after taxes. Skill Focus increases that to 17gp, and most modern technology would be considered masterwork by D&D's blacksmiths and craftsmen, so that's 19gp. If you look at the prices of goods and services the commoner is doing quite well for himself indeed.

Just leaving this here.

Here are some more rolls, trying to get something I'd actually want (Ethereal Jaunt being the best I've had so far):

Roll #4: 239. Glossolalia. What the heck is that? (Looks it up.) Mmm, no thank you.

Roll #5: 374. Open/Close. Wow, what a weak superpower. No thank you.

Roll #6: 551. Sunbeam. Blinding people? Not something I need to do. Killing mold and fungus could be useful, but I'm not interested in being Super-Maid.

Roll #7: 021. Antiplant Shell. I'm really not that worried about being attacked by daffodils.

Roll #8: 206. Fire Trap. This has little enough use in a D&D game. Totally pointless for real world people.

Roll #9: 140. Detect Magic. Yeah, that's REALLY useful in the real world.

Roll #10: 547. Summon Nature's Ally VI. Well, at least it's versatile. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with a constant collection of bears, elephants, whales, and pixies. I mean, being able to summon pixies would make for great assassination techniques that nobody could detect... but I don't want to assassinate people.

Summoning a megaraptor might be nice so that scientists could try to study its genetic structure... as long as they can do it quickly? I guess even a blood sample would vanish when the raptor does... and 11 rounds isn't nearly long enough to be useful. But I could certainly make the next Jurassic Park movie easier to produce. (I could probably pocket a good bit of money to produce these "special effects".)

And I could also summon things from the SNA V list: large elementals, janni, satyrs... there could be potential here. Satyrs for charm person, sleep, or fear... there have been so many times I've wanted neighbor dogs to just fall asleep instead of barking all night long.

Janni have plane shift (can I actually travel to other planes in the real world?) as well as many other interesting minor abilities (speak with animals... what are my cats saying?; create food and water... I can feed the hungry, but not very well; enlarge or reduce person... well, I'm sure there are uses, like to reach things on a high shelf).

Unicorns can heal injuries and neutralize poison? Okay, I guess I'm setting up shop in a hospital. And unicorns can detect evil, which will come in handy in personal relationships...

Okay, looks like I'm gonna be Unicorn Summoner.

Protection from energy useless?

Pretty sure anyone working with batteries, science kits, working in a lab, firefighters, the arctic, a power plant, an electrical technician etc etc would all disagree.

And spiritual weapon would be an amazing ability that I could easily put to good use. Destroying rubble, hunting, fishing, chopping firewood... The uses are far greater than you realize.

I could probably find a use for incindiery cloud too. Boiling away a swamp maybe?

Truth is, I could find a use for nearly all of the rolls you got. Except leech field, that is indeed useless.

To the OP: could you maybe change the format to the above in order to make it easier?

168: Divine power: The Str boost and the temp hp would be useful, I s'pose, but it really wouldn't alter much about my life, aside from eliminating small annoying injuries like paper cuts.

731: Energy ball: I wonder if I could set up some heavy duty electrodes connected to a battery of batteries in order to fire electricity balls at them for power generation...

430: Ray of exhaustion: Not much use, unless I'm cheating at horse races or something, and even then, I need to find ways to get near enough to use it. Not terribly enthused about it, honestly.

834: Offensive prescience: I don't hit things much, people, animals, or otherwise. Not terribly useful to me.

796: Metaconcert: Useless without other manifesters around, though with a few others who get useful powers, this might actually do something.

378: Mass owl's wisdom: Only a +4, but you've got to do what you can to help stave off the stupidity encroaching on the masses.

I dunno if you want to do that. With large groups of low intelligence low wisdom people suddenly get a brief period of insight and realize how stupid they are, we might get a wave of mass suicides.

I got guidance, so I wouldn't really see it affecting much. I guess I would just be around people and make them a little bit luckier, but not in a way that was noticeable. It is not like I would put on a super-hero costume and call myself Placebo Man. ;)

I suppose if I found out someone else had it, I might consider hiring them to "help" people (like performers and athletes) do slightly statistically better than they would otherwise do, but I can't think of much else to do with someone with that power.

Murder? That spell creates life! It would also spread lycanthropy throughout the world. People would be gifted with a higher wisdom, DR, and a free fur coat! It could save lives. Sure, a few would have to make the sacrafice, but we could just use brain dead coma patients, and people who use cellphones while driving.

Those wererats are always LE, though, and anyone infected with that lycanthropy will also become LE eventually.

I'm going to do a few more.

Roll No. 17: Bear's Endurance, Mass
Something to help out my overweight best friend who can't run for more than two minutes, I guess.

Meh. Always never means always, and alignments can be changed.

No, infected lycanthropes have an actual mechanic where they are forced into that alignment. You have to make a will save everytime you involuntarily transform, and if you fail you're LE, and the DC keeps increasing even if you make it. Willing changing shape makes you LE automatically.

And non-x alignment of Always X races are "rare or unique examples." And they would still have to make that save every-time they transformed.

Tiri
2017-01-07, 12:17 AM
Meh. Always never means always, and alignments can be changed.

Everyone will be LE, though, so no one will have an incentive to be anything but LE. Basically, you turn Earth into the Nine Hells.

Was there juggling? As far as I know the SpC version is the latest, and therefore takes precedence.

Was there juggling? As far as I know the SpC version is the latest, and therefore takes precedence. There are two entirely different spells that just happen to have the same name, and the authors at WotC kept alternating which one took precedence through republishing each of them, and the one that creates entirely new, fully sapient, and besouled beings out of basically nothing as a lowish level spell just happened to be the last one on the roster. I don't even think either author even knew that the other version existed.

The version that gives you lycanthropy is really cool, while the other is pretty dumb on a large number of levels.

The version that distributes lycanthropy is busted as hell, because it has barely any limits on the kind of lycanthropy it can give, and can be removed very easily. Toggling lycanthropy is a common tactic for HD abuse, and making yourself or others into brown bears or something is a great way to get a huge power boost. Bring all the skeletons you want, here's my army of LG brown bear commoners.

And as far as I can tell there was no alternating. Defends of the Faith(3.0)(2001) had the version that distributed lycanthropy, Complete Divine(2004) reprinted that version with no changes, and then Spell Compendium(2005) updated it to the version that creates wererats. That's not really alternating, that's just replacing a broken spell, something SpC did quite a bit of.

MaxiDuRaritry
2017-01-07, 12:58 AM
It's not like toggling lycanthropy is very hard anyway. You have repeatable infection vectors and repeatable means of curing it.

Wasn't the wererat version in an OA supplement, or something?

205: Fire Storm.

If I wanted to be a superhero, I'd have won the superpower lottery... As it is, meh. Not bad, but I don't really need it.

529: Suggestion

I dunno, mind control rubs me the wrong way, but it really could be useful.

First roll: 8. At-will 3.5 version of Alter Self? Heck yeah, I'm keeping that! And it fits my choice from that other thread where I chose Transmuter as my level 1 character class!

I think I'd keep this pretty quiet and spend a lot of time figuring out what I can and can't do. Is using the power subtle like Mystique or loud and flashy like a He-Man transformation? I imagine there would be a big learning curve. I don't think I would begin a life of crime but having 30 minutes of flight per use would definitely be fun (and maybe helpful) once I work up the nerve.

If I were an official type and found out someone had *this* power, I'd be equal parts intrigued and concerned. I'd figure out if they were committing crimes. If so, intervene as appropriate (people have rights). Otherwise, I'd see if they're interested in a career in law enforcement. If I were just a random wealthy person with a philanthropic streak, I'd ask if they were interested in finding out if the ability could somehow benefit others. In either case, if they're not interested, leave them alone.

If I could choose- Reality Revision. It would only affect my life if I wanted it to. I would make anything I want happen for the most part. I could even alter people's memories and reality itself to make it so my ability is hidden.

Random - I rolled Searing Light... I'd keep it mostly secret while I found out how it worked, possibly even inventing my own self-charging power source. :)

276 - Horrid Wilting. I really don't want to dehydrate anyone to death, thanks.
561 - Symbol of Weakness. Non-lethal, but what to do with it other than be a "richard"?
72 - Chill Metal. So I have my own permanent inexhaustible ice-maker. Or I go around giving people frostbite, just because.
410 - Programmed Image. That's a keeper. I can not only set up the most amazing theatre in history and make a ton of money, but my own private dwelling is as secure as I like since no-one can even find their way through it unless I want them to. Takes me a little work every day to set up the theatre show, but firing off an SLA isn't exactly strenuous.

Shalist
2017-01-07, 03:41 PM
Note that having high-level SLAs means you meet the CL prereqs for many item creation feats, allowing you to get a little more versatility and millage out of it.

---

Blah blah wishing myself to 50+int/wis and giving everyone everywhere magic rings that cast heal every round; also kittens blah blah.

---

Random rolling through the 3 lists though (spells, powers, and a 3rd roll for both):

550 Summon swarm: This conjures the swarm briefly into existence, so you couldn't eliminate or harvest existing pests with it. Now, magic items created with this SLA would be exceedingly useful, as they could control / eliminate / manage vermin of all sorts, both for population control (disease-laden rats and mosquitoes, i.e. the Pied Piper) or for greatly enhanced resource management, allowing for new industries (spider silk) or eliminating world hunger outright (roach farming, agriculture).

698 Dimension door, psionic: Hop 720' as a move action that uses your remaining actions that round. That's ~80mph if you push it for the whole hour. If you hop straight up, you'd fall ~600' the first round, with terminal velocity being around ~1100-1800'/round, assuming momentum is conserved. Admittedly, this is all far less impressive than before I pulled out the calculator, though a good wingsuit (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wingsuit_flying) could reduce my falling speed to 180'/round and effectively let me fly ~200mph, so long as I spend ~15 minutes/hour 'climbing'. And while the original 80 mph doesn't seem like much, being able to get places you ordinarily couldn't (mountaintops) or travel in straight lines (hopping from roof to roof in a city) would be both very useful and very fun.

98 Control water: Spamming this could create or destroy a lot of water, aiding in flood prevention or droughts. Admittedly, the first thing that came to mind was using it on a space shuttle, or somewhere like Mars. Again, very magic-item-able (decanter of endless water or its desiccating equivalent) to solve all sorts of problems and give all sorts of engineers a wonderful new tool to play with.

2nd set:

604 Wall of force: Rnd/lvl duration is a shame, but you could still create smaller walls as infinitely sharp cutting tools, use them as 90' long build-as-you-go bridges to travel anywhere (so long as you don't get too distracted). And screwing with people, of course, 'cause who says mimes should have all the fun. Magic item creation would allow you to make permanent or portable walls, which would be ridiculously awesome both personally, and from an engineering standpoint.

866 Teleport, psionic greater: Yes. Yes please. Live anywhere (so long as the rent is cheap :P), go anywhere, even other planets (breathable atmosphere sold separately). Do anything...just yes. I likely wouldn't live terribly long with this, as I doubt I could resist (for instance) trying to put organized criminals out of business by robbing them blind, or otherwise putting a bullseye on my back.

820 Null psionics field: ...I mean, if I can't have any fun, I'm sure as heck not going to let anyone else have any either.

18. Antilife shell. I can't think of anything I'd want that for.
Second roll. 841. Psionic repair damage. As far as I can tell, unusable unless someone invents a golem in real life. Possibly with some use in the field of robotics.
Third roll. 661. Claw of energy. Unusable unless I somehow gain claws. Stop me if you're sensing a theme.
Fourth roll. 281. Illusory script. I can write in unbreakable code that the person I'm trying to communicate with is guaranteed to understand immediately; I also have a written-rather-than-spoken version of Suggestion. Not bad. I can think of things to do with that.

Uh no. It litteraly makes a bunch of rats explode out of your chest. Thats just evil...

That's the version from Spell Compendium.

Complete Divine has a Curse of Lycanthropy that turns a person into a lycanthrope. You can choose what sort of lycanthrope they become -- the spell version makes the selection based on the material component, but since this is a spell-like ability without material components, you presumably get to choose.

There are few restrictions (it's got to be a predator, and it can't be larger than a bear), and the payoff is potentially awesome.

For instance, I can use this to curse myself to be a were-couatl. I gain +8 Str, +6 Dex, +4 Con, +6 Int, +10 Wis, and +6 Cha. I need to make a DC15 Wisdom check to gain conscious control over my form, at which point I cast spells like a level 9 sorcerer (with a much widened spell list). Then I can give other people this same advantage by biting them. They can give still others the same advantage by biting them. And Remove Curse, which everyone afflicted can access as a third-level spell and cast seven times a day, can cure those who don't want to be werecouatls anymore.

Compare to, say, Bestow Curse (which lets you invent curses on the order of a 6-point stat change or a 4-point skill modifier). That's vaguely comparable in some of its effects, but it doesn't scale. If I want to make everyone on Earth have a better time, I'd have to put forth a lot of thought to determine how to make that happen. I'd have to worry about being as efficient as possible. With Curse of Lycanthropy, I just curse everyone who asks and suddenly they're better at everything.

The largest downside of this scenario is that lycanthropy affects people's alignments. This means you have to be careful what forms you choose and afflict volunteers only. Unless you're chaotic evil, in which case pick a random creature every time.

Since we're doing three rolls:

226, Gaseous Form. Flight and the ability to escape from confined spaces, as long as it's not too breezy. Fun, and maybe I'll get over my fear of heights. But if someone noticed me, that could cause significant problems, and I would quickly find myself wishing that I lived in more enlightened times.

254, Haste. Handy for my commute. I might be noticed, but as someone running, nothing mystical. And it would let me spend less time cleaning. A minor convenience.

391, Planar Binding. I'd like to say I'd summon a Noble Djinni and start bargaining, but Noble Djinni weren't part of the scenario.

If I read it in an over-literal fashion, I can use it to make travel nicer for others: I stand in an airport lounge and Planar Binding first class passengers from their planes. When their planes land, I dismiss them and they return to the planes I summoned them from. It's a premium service that only I can offer, and I can charge several thousand dollars per head over expenses. It's just unfriendly to my sleep schedule. It also assumes that sending the people back where they came from prioritizes the plane and not the tarmac -- some experimentation required.

The Spell Compendium version is seriously wtf. "Create 1d6 new, permanent, adult sapient creatures for a sixth-level spell"? That looks Miracle-level to me. Looking at the description, I suspect the writer was thinking in videogame terms ("this spell kills the enemy touched and adds a hazard for anything that isn't the caster or the caster's allies to the immediate surroundings").

Let's roll a few more...

721. ectoplasmic shambler. Wait, what? Okay, so it's a movable fog cloud that deals damage. Not terrible, but too likely to kill people (4 damage/round).

339. magic missile. Classic, but I don't need a gun.

101. create food and water. Practical but boring.

877. sustenance. As above, but worse.

71. charm person. Practical, but immoral, in my opinion.

There are a lot of sucky superpowers! One more...

372. obscure object. Almost useless, but part of low-end magical security, I suppose.

145. detect thoughts. Pretty good, and though privacy-sensitive, less immoral than charm (I lied about doing one more).

820. null psionics field. Pretty much the opposite of what I want.

645. bite of the wolf. With my strength score, it's worse than magic missile, but probably a lot more intimidating.

184. entangle. I don't think I really need BFC, but it's good for crossing busy streets.

Rolling for powers is addictive.

Spells:
201. Find traps - I thought I might be stuck spending my life cleaning up land mines but turns out this is pretty much pointless.

115. Cure Moderate Wounds, Mass - I could save a lot of lives with this I'd guess. At least I'd feel good about myself.

147. Dictum - Yeah, nah, do not want.

Powers:
825. Personality Parasite - ugh. This seems pretty high up on the horrible things to do to someone chart

865. Sequester, Psionic - So I can hide people really, really well but they're unconscious while it happens? I suppose there could be a time and a place for this but it seems pretty terrible.

860. Schism - I don't particularly like hanging out with one of me, but I guess this could be useful. Should work like a better version of rubber duckie debugging.

Both:
756. Fate Link - Nope.

286. Incendiary Cloud - Not fantastic but I would assume I could find a way of using this to produce power so it wouldn't be totally terrible.

16. Animate Plants - 7th level spell so that means I get... 13 rounds? So slightly over a minute I can have a plant fight for me? If I can direct them then this could sorta be useful. If all they do is attack something then it's pretty dumb.

One more because I feel a bit cheated by these rolls so far... Drum roll please!
78. Clone - ooo. Interesting. This depends on two things: Preserving the clone and if I can find a way to negate the con damage.
Best case I'm immortal, worst case I can some really dangerous things a few times and come back if it all goes pear shaped. Oh, and anyone else I want to keep around which is nice.

Let's roll:
180: Energy Drain: Nope. If I wanted to kill someone (which I DON'T!), there are easier ways that don't make it obvious it was me.
122: Daylight: I can buy a flashlight that can do this for less than $30. Not wasting a SLA on it.
83: Command Undead: Unless the Zombie Apocalypse happens (and they still count as undead), this is worthless.
50: Blur: Umm.. I can make it look like I'm doing Supers in Street Fighter Alpha? Not a lot of other utility otherwise.
41: Black Tentacles: Insert tentacle hentai joke here.

Realized I did 192 rather than 912. Adjusting...
99: Consecrate: Without undead to worry about, this is just praying.
820: Mindlink, Thieving: Since I can't augment it, this lacks translation utility. Kinda cool, though no bonus over regular mindlink, since I don't have the PP to manifest another spell even if they are a manifester.
480: Shadow Evocation, Greater: While there's a bunch of useful evocation spells, not a lot of them have peaceful utility.
228: Lesser Geas:Useful but VERY morally iffy.
215: Fly: Fun, but kinda flashy.
604: Wall of Force: Useful, but not very interesting.
531: Summon... Instrument.: Just missed the useful ones. I also don't play any instruments, though I'd seriously consider it just to summon electric guitars when someone air guitars.
8: Alter Self: I guess I'll stick with this one; I can have fun with this one without messing up anyone else.

Out of curiosity, why do you consider Fly to be flashy? It's probably the least-flashy flight spell in the game; other options are things like growing wings, growing wings made of fire, turning into a dragon and so on.

The biggest problem with unaided flight is if it doesn't include a substantial speed boost. If you can fly, but only at the same rate as running, then you're not exactly outperforming a jet. You're either flying high enough that the air is thin and you pass out, or at middling altitude where you get bugs in your teeth and attacked by overly amorous birds, or low enough that people will through things at you because people are the worst. And you're doing it at the speed of running, which means you're not saving much time and you're not able to avoid all the crap I just mentioned. The convenience of not having to actually use your legs is offset by all the crap I just mentioned.

Now, flying while invisible, advantage, because you can avoid the crap I just mentioned. But flying alone, unless you're doing so at high speeds whilst protected from the effects of said high speeds, is just showing off.

Lateral flight is pointless. Society has developed a lot of methods for getting somewhere in a hurry.

Vertical flight is where it's at. Clear fences! Avoid stairs! Never wait for an elevator again! Get amazing angles for your photos, dodge every single crowd, bypass the locks on your building's rooftop hatch. And when people throw things at you, those things fall right back down on them, and you laugh. As the song goes:
How I wish I were a little baby bird, baby bird
I would fly up to the steeple
and deposit on the people
If I were a little baby bird, baby bird

MaxiDuRaritry

Wish and shapechange are where it's at, because they can get you enough options to hit supersonic flight speeds pretty easily.

Heck, just with some items and feats (which those can grant via magic items through wish), I have a character hitting ~1,384,091 MPH. That's more than 1,851 times the speed of sound.

Fly gives you a speed of 60, and "running" with 60 movement speed is about 27 mph. You won't be zooming down the freeway, but it's not exactly slow.

Segev
2017-01-09, 05:35 PM
There's also no indication that flying using the spell is nearly as tiring as, say, running at 30 mph.

ExLibrisMortis

Fly weirdly enough allows you to charge, but not run. Still, double-moves should get you about 6 m/s, which is about 21.6 km/h, a decent biking speed. If you can ascend at half speed, and then move forward at double speed by gliding 5' down every round, you can increase that to about 10 m/s, or 36 km/h.

One more, just for grins: 225: Freezing Sphere.
OK, that one might have some use... but I doubt anyone's going to find out, or that I'm going to end up actually using it, simply because I've yet to find myself in a situation where having a firearm on hand would actually help things. I might learn to ice skate if I had it.

You have a quick, easy way of breaking thermodynamics over your knee, and aren't interested in being payed obscene amounts of money for reforging the world's glaciers? You could singlehandedly set global warming back to square one and be hailed as a superhero.

I'm not real educated on the science involved, but I'm... pretty sure this won't work. I mean, firstly because the ice from the spell is temporary, but secondly because the rate of melting is just too damn fast. Even if you spent 24 hours a day firing the spell every six seconds, you'd only be able to freeze (math math math) a little over a two million square feet per day, which is 0.8 square miles. For scale, this article (http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/) said that arctic ice last month grew by almost thirty five thousand square miles.

Not really. Spells are funky. It doesn't generate a specific amount of temperature reduction. It causes ice to form to a particular depth on top of a body of (mostly) water (so if I drop one into the ocean at the equator when it's 90 degrees out or something, then it's a big reduction (90 F), but if I drop it on a 33F lake in the mountain, it's just a single degree F). Specifically, six inches, and (with the rules of this particular game) 1100 square feet (in a circle, that works out to a radius of a bit over 18 feet. Sure, that's 550 cubic feet of ice... but it only lasts for 11 rounds. Then it's suddenly water again, despite the fact that a six inch thick slab of ice will take hours to melt even on a sunny day. Yet it doesn't matter if I'm in the arctic - that ice will be gone in just over a minute. This will not have any meaningful effect on glaciers, nor on global warming, even if I use it constantly while boating around the equator.

OK, yes, I can maintain a cold well, and that has some uses in power generation... but I can only do so for as long as I'm awake, and I'm probably the only one who's got this specific thing, so I fail compared to, say, a hydroelectric plant (especially as I still need to have all the equipment to turn that into electricity).

Plus, the ability to have a personal offense doesn't help much when you don't have much in the way of personal defense. If someone with money happens to think these things I'm doing are inconvenient, I'm not going to last long.

Rolling again for giggles:
851: Reality Revision.
...
I WIN!!!!! Not quite Wish, but almost as good. Any 8th level or lower psionic power at-will. Yay. Plus free stuff! Whoohoo!
...
I'd probably retire in comfort with all the psionically-flavoured magic items in the game. I can still get assassinated, after all. I'd likely drop "traps" of beneficial effects in a lot of places.

Cure Minor wounds
I could get a Job as a doctor and make a decent amount of money. On the plus side it could help on some scenarios
Limited Wish
With this I basically win life
Speak with Plants
Could be interesting to see what happens and could also make me a fortune if I am able to use this in exchange for payment for science purposes although it could also completely fail and make me seem like a lunatic
Hardening
I could make a fortune by making smartphones not break, also computers, could also help the military of my country in exchange for payment, etc
Remove Disease
I would become a doctor and become RIICH
Mental Pinnacle
Could be handy for the temporary Wisdom and Intelligence bonus
Confusion
This could be useful if I got in a fight or something but how often would that really happen anyways.

Okay lets give this a go.

513 - Spell Resistance Not useful unless multiple people are getting powers.

lets try again.

64 - Cause Fear I can make a single person or animal run away for a short while.
Useful in a fight and possibly usable as proof of terrible supernatural power.
I could start a cult but I don't really want to be a hoody.
I could prove existence of the supernatural or sign on with some fringe researchers and probably make a bunch of money but I don't want the exposure.
So I'll probably just keep doing what I do normally and keep the power in reserve if I ever need to scare off hostile people or animals.

This looks quite interesting! I'll try this.
1. 187 - Erase. If anyone can think of a way to use this, they get a cookie. :smallsigh:
2. 341 - Magic Stone. Because the +1 enhancement gives it accuracy, this has the potential to be funny, under the right circumstances... I'll roll again.
3. 850 - Read Thoughts. I can definitely use this, but I don't really have much interest in prying into other people's minds. I'll keep this if my next rolls are poor.
4. 831 - Precognition, Defensive. I am not a martial sort of person, so... no.
5. 107 - Crushing Despair. Mwahahaha! I can imagine lots of uses for this! Whenever I have the slightest squabble with someone, I can crush any hope of ever being happy again like gnats!
6. 84 - Command, Greater. YES!
7. 286 - Incendiary Cloud. See #4.
8. 362 - Misdirection. No!
9. 910 - Wall of Ectoplasm. No! This is as useless to me as Misdirection!
10. 300 - Invisibility. Yes! I love this!

If I had to pick, I would have to choose between Read Thoughts and Invisibility.

1: I want my cookie. Go all james bond and use erase to destroy top secret documents. Better than the best crosswise shredder, and allows the paper to be reused.
2: You can definitely use that to catch dinner. Rabbits, birds, lizards and other small edible critters.
3: Read thoughts is amazing. Probably one of the most useful abilities around, you can pilfer stock information, solve crimes, say the perfect thing to your girlfriend. It's easily a great pickup.
4: Don't need to be martial. I could see that being of great use to a firefighter, construction worker or highrise window washer.
5: Probably the most evil power you rolled. Yeah, I can think of uses for it too... all absolutely rotten.
6: Yeah.
7: Oh come on. You could totally make the world burn. Cities would be obliterated with that. Cast that once per round? You could go for a stroll and burn everything behind you.
8: I wonder if googling you counts as divination...
9: Oh you could totally use this. Win a race, obliterate someone who cut you off, get some privacy in the hospital, make a temporary stairway or bridge. I can think of thousands of uses for that.
10: Invisibility is useful, but nowhere near as useful as read thoughts or greater commanc. Sure, you can sneak into the girls locker room, but you can only peek. If you do anything more, you get caught because the spell falls. You can do the whole james bond thing, but you will eventually be caught and killed. It would allow to avoid your mother-in-law though...

433. Reduce Animal - Uh ...

Yea, I'll try a few more:
13. Animal Trance - What is it with animals? I have no desire to go into animal control!
619. Wind Wall - Fancy, but not really useful for me.
733. Energy Burst - Just ... no.

This is getting nowhere. Okay, one last try...
658. Charm, Psionic - Finally something useful. One hour only and I cannot augment it, but that will help in basically any social situation.

346: Major Image
This one's pretty cool. At the very least, the ability to make any sound I desire would be incredibly useful for messing with other people, and so would making any smell. 7 10 ft. cubes goes a long way. Fun, if not very applicable in everyday life outside of becoming a magician or pranking others.

256: Heal Mount
Unfortunately, I don't have a paladin's special mount.

659: Clairtangent Hand
Useful, if only for the minor telekinesis. The ability to sense the area around the hand has uses, but I doubt many of them would be appropriate on a board like this. Also good for cheating on tests, if I took those anymore.

337: Greater Magic Fang
Unarmed strikes count as natural weapons, so I suppose I could be a decent MMA fighter.

862: Sense Link
I guess it could be an interesting experience, but for most people probably useless.

438: Reincarnate
Bringing people back would be cool, although turning them into various fantasy races is less so.

642: Bend Reality
Only took 7 tries, but with this I don't think there's anything else that can be said about having the laundry-list of superpowers that this gives you, like Neo in the Matrix kind of powers.

193: Fabricate
The possibilities of turning a material into any other material is endless. Turn 100 cubic feet of something into one of those highly reactive elements and you could make a big, big crater.

Not on the physical piece of paper you're currently holding, but the piece of paper is not what makes the law.
