Added a brief description of the iron spikes that dot the landscape to my most recent post. None are near enough to have any effect on this combat.

I'm noticing that Cha saves tend to be pretty low. Is Cha being used as a dump stat?

Ajadea
2017-01-06, 05:02 PM
For Ragnhild, yes. She's pretty much here to smash heads and take body parts. Looking at the sheets - our punchy people dumped Charisma and our casty people dumped Strength, more or less universally. That's not surprising, given that we come from a 3.5 optimization board, and in 3.5 Charisma is the dump stat of the day.

Another, more relevant, factor is that there isn't anyone in the party who's proficient in Charisma saving throws. The classes proficient in those saves are Clerics, Paladins, Sorcerers, Bards, and Warlocks - and we've got a Ranger, a Barbarian, a Monk, and two Wizards (Nerissa has levels in Warlock, but her first level was in Wizard so she gets the wizard saves)

Though honestly if I'd known the party makeup would be like this, I'd have probably rolled a cleric myself! I hope Ragnhild's Cure Wounds is enough for mid-battle fixing up, because that's all the healing we've got.

I'd recommend reposting Toruk's sheet here, because the Recruitment thread is going away in a month.

For me, I put my 5 in Charisma instead of Intelligence (which is the official best 5e dump stat mechanically) because the original version of this character had pretty crap charisma too.

Actually, the Monk is proficient in Cha saves...in all saves, actually. Benefits of being a monk.

Yeah, disadvantage saved Fargor from a lot of damage this round.

Round 2

Fargor -> Breena -> Yeenoghu -> Lair Action -> Bar-lguras (2) -> Toruk -> Ragnhild -> Nerissa

Need opposed strength check from Breena vs. the barlgura's grapple attempts (10, 7).

The barlgura that approached is still not close enough so I moved Toruk to the nearest barlgura (the one attempting to grapple Breena/pit fiend).

Fargor needs to make two DC 24 Str saves. Although if the first one fails, the second one isn't needed. If either fail, Fargor is knocked back 15 ft. If either fail by 5+, Fargor is also prone.

Also, a statement and a question: first, while it doesn't make a difference this round, I forgot to upgrade my AC when I used the book, so my AC is 23 (again, does not make a difference this round); second, does this creature have enough reach to hit me the second time if I fail the first Str save and get pushed?

I PMed JNA with a link to this thread - I don't think they knew about the OOC thread or Nerissa's place in the initiative order.

From what I understand - Toruk's confused and won't be acting, Yeenoghu is fighting, and based on the amount of spells cast, I believe Nerissa would be casting Hold Monster after Ragnhild's action? (which won't paralyze him but might blow a Legendary Resistance).

So time for Ragnhild to go smack some fiends with a hammer again.

EDIT: She's pretty much got one trick, but I feel like it's a good trick.

Hey, rules question for the DM: Can I do the -5 to attack/+10 to damage from Sharpshooter when throwing my Dwarven Thrower or javelins?

ValarMorgulis
2017-01-29, 12:42 PM
As it's not technically a ranged weapon, the -5/+10 wouldn't apply.

Okay, so now that Yeenoghu is down, any thoughts on the combat? Anyone actually take significant damage? Seemed pretty easy for you guys, even with a few mooks thrown in. He has a few powers that apply to gnolls, so I could have added some gnolls in, but I think they would be too weak to matter.

Ajadea
2017-01-29, 02:05 PM
From the perspective of a relatively low-optimization ranged character, this was an easy fight. Ragnhild took barely any damage (a couple points from Entangle, but that's it) and was dealing a pretty solid amount of damage per round. There wasn't anything that necessitated a Cure Wounds as far as I'm aware, or damage severe enough to throw down diamond dust on a Stoneskin.

King539
2017-01-29, 02:28 PM
This was fairly easy. Breena is rather more high-op, and her original form didn't take any damage at all.

AvatarVecna
2017-01-29, 05:31 PM
Fargor isn't particularly high-op, for melee or stealth, but he did about as well as I expected him to do in a straight up fight: namely, he dodged a lot and used flurries and opportunist to get lots of attacks. Saves were particularly high, so I couldn't land a Stunning Strike, but most of my abilities weren't ruined by the uberstats.

Lioslaith
2017-01-30, 07:30 AM
Same thoughts with Toruk, the damage he took was minimal compared to what we fought. From a pure numbers crunch standpoint it was easy, at this level of play I tend to look for more RP than combat. I know this was a playtest and am not applying the RP vs combat in this instance, just saying that personally I think the higher levels would benefit from more story and less combat.
