RAI apparently nothing happens when you cast it as a higher level spell. What should happen?

Nothing. It's like casting the Shield spell with a 2nd level spell.

"Nothing" seems a bit harsh. Harm as appears in the spell section of the PHB seems more appropriate.

The boring answer is an extra 2d6 damage per spell level.

Other possible answers that may or may not be balanced:

As a 9th level spell, this affects all creatures in a 30' radius.
At 7th level, a creature who fails his save must make a new save on the following round or take half the original damage subject to all the same effects (max hp loss, can't reduce below 1hp, etc). At 8th level this continues for up to 2 rounds. At 9th level this continues for up to 3 rounds.
As an 8th level spell, the target is also stunned on a failed save until the end of their next turn.

Other ideas include playing up the "disease" aspect of the spell or adding other terrible rider effects. Fun stuff. :smallamused:

I would think more riders, as pointed out.
