Rifleman build

So read through the artificer class and it seems fun, instantly came up with a build that should be pretty cool using just a 1 dip for the cannon thingy the gunsmith gets,
Variant human +1DEX + 1WIS, sharpshooter feat and perception, stats 8/16/12/13/16/8
Levels: 16 sharpshooter Fighter, 3 hunter ranger and 1 gunsmith.

Feats/ASI's: +4 DEX, +2CON, observant, alert and mobile.

Doesn't work dude. And the gun uses a bonus action to be reloaded, you can only fire at once per turn. Or twice, but then on your next turn you reload before firing and are back to only once a turn

It has the "loading" property? Guess take crossbow expert to ignore it then. :)

It does not have the "loading" property. It specifically requires a bonus action to reload it every time it's fired. Big difference.

The rennisance guns have the loading property so crossbow expert would cancel the loading rule. But the modern and alien have the reload property which means you have to take an action to load the weapon again

For anyone who's not an Artificer, yeah. But if you are, then you get a substantial damage boost from Thunder Monger; your damage is always equal to a rogue Sneak Attacking with a shortbow, with a bonus action cost instead of positioning restrictions and a lot more range.

You could still do a MC but do a 1 or 2 level dip into fighter if you wanted, but Artificer looses a nice capstone and you won't get to max cannon damage if you do.

If you keep the VHuman to get sharpshooter remember you won't always be able to use everything the feat grants you. Best boosts will be ignoring cover amounts so you don't have to worry about people between you and your target as often. Fighter would grant Archery Style for another +2 on attack rolls which becomes very nice with avoiding the +2 AC for cover so it all goes to increase your accuracy.
The -5/+10 will likely not be used. If it would work with Thunder Monger could be debatable since it's a "Special Attack" and not an Attack Action attack. Check with your DM on it to be sure. Blast, Piercing, and Explosive it won't work with since those are save-or-effect Special Attacks so no roll on your end for hit. Would work with normal attack and give an increase to damage for when Thunder damage is not an option due to immunity.
A 2 level dip could be interesting since action surge would give a once per rest two-shot attack. Combined with your Special Attacks this could be interesting. Especially if the "possible Bonus Action" let's you fire>reload fire>reload so you're ready to go next round.
(Kinda turns the Blast Wave SA into a Street Sweeper once per rest whick could be cool if you've the terrain to toss mobs about or off a cliff)

In all you gain a +2 to hit, a 1/rest two shot attack, and heavy armor.
To get it you trade lvl 19 and 20 artificer abilities so no lvl 4 spells, +attunement number to saves, one less magic item made, and you don't get the lvl 19 damage increase to Artificer abilities.

Of course those are lvl 19 and 20 things so if you don't plan on getting that high you don't really miss out on what you wouldn't get normally XD
