Ascertaining Magic Item Rarity?

Has anyone put together a guideline for assessing the rarity of custom magic items? Obviously the easy way is to compare to the DMG and find the closest fit, but I'm looking for something a little more complex; things like scope of utility, ranges of spell levels, damage limits, and other factors and how they contribute to rarity. Obviously it's not a science, I'm just curious if someone has broken it down in a useful way.

The best tool I have seen is posting the item on this forum and asking everyone's opinion. :smallsmile:

First step is probably to have a more refined scale. The rarity scale is pretty terrible.

Also agreement might have to be reached on what the middle of each category is.
