View Full Version : Signature Benefit from Each School of Magic?

I’m working on a minor artifact which has been touched by all the schools of magic, and I’d like it to express a minor, unpredictable benefit from each school.

Divination is easy—brief flashes of intuition into the future. I’m also thinking about Conjuration providing some very modest healing. But what would work for the other schools of magic?

I would suggest that Conjuration's benefit be a Summon Monster spell occur, maybe III or IV level. Necromancy can offer healing through either False Life or a Vampiric Touch if you happened to be hit with a touch attack or grappled.

Transmutation can be either a buff spell, Abjuration can also offer the same or maybe a Dispel Magic which you can direct. Evocation can be an elemental attack at random moments with the damage being minor or maybe the odd lightning bolt or fireball that occurs randomly. Illusion can maybe be a Silent Image or free Invisibility. Enchantment maybe a Charm Person.

Abjuration - The item emits a tiny shield.

Conjuration - The item creates a small cube.

Divination - You can see incoherent images.

Enchantment - You feel a little more talkative (+2 to diplomacy, bluff or intimidate once)

Evocation - Produces a tiny disk of force that be used as a frisbee.

Illusion - You can make a small hologram.

Necromancy - You can make a nearby bone rattle.

Transmutation - You grow a tiny appendage, like an extra finger.

There are some feats in Complete Mage that triggers whenever you cast a spell of a specific school, the most famous of which would be Cloudy Conjuration. Maybe try those?

Might the ACF from PH2 for each specialist mage be a better choice?

In addition to the above suggestions, you could take a look at the Master Specialist's School Esoterica for school-themed abilities.

It even has minor, moderate and major versions of the feature, so you could make differently-powered versions of the artifact.

Do you mean the Immediate Magic feature on p. 68?

These are interesting, but a little stronger than I was thinking of. The figment ability for Illusion looks amusing, though.

Also interesting, thanks—although not sure how some of these would be standalone effects, independent of any spellcasting.
